The White MacBooks were plasticky.

I'm a big mac fan, but the White iBook ==> White MacBooks were pretty crappy.

I bought 2 iBooks and both died on me. I've own over 20 Apple laptops and never had one died on me except for those crappy iBooks ==> white MacBooks.

White macbook here, 5 years, still going strong.
Not too crappy actually.

OK, I was looking at my MBP and trying to see how you could find it plasticky

But then isn't it a bit unfair to compare a new device to other ones that are several years old and not sold anymore ?

I used one for a week. and it was a week of headache. When youre used to the apple smoothness in web browsing and general navigating around the interface, It really cant compare.
Google Butter needs more butter.
And you cant compare "plasticky" to phones and macbooks if we are talking about tablets.
A week of headache? Really? If it was so painful, why did you keep at it for a week? I don't believe you.

And why, exactly, can't I use Apple products with plastic exteriors when discussing whether or not plastic exteriors are inferior?

I went on a trip and my buddy lent me his, I am no longer friends with him because no REAL friend would do that to someone.
But seriously. It was quite obviously laggy on about every other site and the UI was clunky. I do respect the drag down status bar actually doing something besides stock and email notifications. Ill give it that.
But the overall feel of the device and the UI just didnt meet the high standards apple has burned into my mind.

My point was that Apple considered the products to be acceptable - even more so, the 3G was a plastic-backed successor to the aluminum-backed original iPhone, so Apple saw it as an improvement.

Therefore, to say that plastic is inherently bad or "cheap" belies Apple's own product line.

The 3G, in particular, shows that Apple considered the move to a plastic back from a metal one to be an improvement, and they stuck with that for years.

Therefore, to attack the Nexus 7 because the back is plastic is to attack Apple for using plastic.

The Nexus is more comfortable to hold, and for that reason, I find the plastic to be superior.

I've had a lot of aluminum MacBook Pros/Airs. I love the unibody design, but the aluminum edges are painful. Sometimes, pretty isn't pleasant.

I, for one, never said that plastic is inherently cheap or bad. I said I like metal better, and that most 7" tablets are engineered to be cheap, and they are. That's not a criticism. I'll give it to you that the Nexus looks and feels much less cheap than the Fire.

Besides, I'd have no trouble saying Apple screwed up with some of their products and choices. I've had a 3GS and didn't like its bulk and its plastic back (worse, it was white. White and plastic are no friends). I probably wouldn't have liked the macbook white. That being said, I find that (good) plastic doesn't bother me as much in phones as it does in laptops and tablets. I do like the SIII a lot. May very well get an SIV or SV when it's time to retire my 4S.

So yes, if you offered me the choice between a iPhone 3G and a Nexus 7, I'd probably take the Nexus :p But against an iPad Mini, I take the Mini. But the plastic vs metal thing is not my primary criteria.

Now, the initial comparison was between Nexus and iPad Mini. Not between Nexus and old phones or laptops.

My white Macbook lasted me 5 years before I sold it. No problems besides the cracking palm rest which was replaced well out of warranty for free.

This is getting pathetic.

Why don't people get it?

Android have always had a device with better specs.

Remember the Sprint EVO 4G a couple of years ago.

The phone was going to destroy iPhone with its faster processor and 4G.... Wait, you can't remember what phone i'm talking about can you? It was a pretty big deal for 2 months back in the day though...

What about the Samsung Galaxy that was going to destroy the iPhone?... No not the S2... and not the S3.... can you remember it, it was a big bulky piece of plastic with a faster processor.... no?

The Nexus 7 is googles best attempt at a tablet bar non, and it's a great device for the price.

The iPad mini is competing with the Nexus though, the iPad mini in competing with the iPad.

It's a whole different experience.

You don't believe him that he didn't like his android tablet?

I LOATHE my android phone. Do you believe me? It's been nothing but trouble from day 1 and I've had it for more than a year because I don't just throw away electronics like they are toilet paper. It has no resell value at all, either.

Well, I have 2 android 7" tablets.

Sold my galaxy tab 7" because it keeps freezing and requires rebooting.

Just upgraded my Acer iconia to ICS. Then I started getting 'application not responding" when I try to open apps, requiring rebooting.

Had to do a reset and clean install. Seems to fix the problem. But I got rid of a lot of widgets and live wallpaper stuff.

Oh, and I can't run a lot of android apps on my android device.

I'm moving all of my devices to Apple (pc, tablet, phone) over the next few years not because I love Apple, but because I hate android and windows 8.

Believe it or not, I found that the blackberry os on the playbook was far superior to android. iOS takes it to a whole other level.

I hate android with a blinding passion. I can't even do the simplest things on my phone because the os is so buggy. I can't even stay logged in to my wifi for more than 30 minutes because it keeps cutting out, which forces me to go into settings, turn wifi off, then turn it back on. The youtube app crashes like crazy. I would say I spend more time fixing **** on that phone than I do enjoying it. I'm considering buying a used iphone 3gs just so I can ditch this piece of crap android nonsense.

I have a verizon lte xoom that I bought for a pittance at the last black friday sale, and the wife uses it out of the house since she dropped her ipad2 and broke the 3g connection. Even though the specs trounce the 2, she's at best ambivalent about it. It's infuriating how long google, motorola and verizon take to roll out updates for it. The difference between Apple and Google is that Apple is like having a controlling girlfriend, while Android is like having an abusive one.

For me it's a combination of build, ecosystem and ease of use.

(minor bit of background, I am 31 worked in IT based roles since I was 17)

I was shopping last night and picked up a galaxy tab. Opened the web browser, page could not be found (probably not linked to wifi in shop). Just in case I thought I would browse to google, couldn't find the address bar, it had been somehow hidden, presumably to make me see more of the screen, but I couldn't find it at all.

Now I am not saying to a seasoned android tablet user (and I owned an android phone for 4 years), they would have found it in the blink of an eye, but I couldn't, and that instantly says something about it's useability.

I have bought both my kids an iPad mini for xmas, me and the wife have iphones and the simplicity of facetime & iMessage is at a level where our 6 year old can manage it.

My sister in law has bought her kids a kindle fire, because she can't afford the iPad, that was her reasoning, not from some pixes per inch technical comparison. I imagine most users purchasing a kindle fire/nexus 7/galaxy something, are doing it because they can't won't pay the apple premium.

PERFECTLY PUT!!!!

And I'm not a "fandroid" or whatever you dorks call them. I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad so im no hater, but seriously the unconditional love you guys have for apple is downright sickening. And it is EXACTLY what allows them to sell whatever they make for whatever they want and sell them like hot cakes. (It is also what makes another portion of the people hate apple)

And then you complain that apple is losing touch with what people want!?!? What other conclusion could they POSSIBLY come to other than.... YOU WANT WHATEVER THEY PUT OUT.

I've never understood the logic of posts like this. I'm guessing it goes something like this.

  1. I only buy the Apple products I like, so I'm supper smart
  2. You bought an Apple product I don't like. The only reason someone would buy an Apple product that a supper smart person like me doesn't like is because they're sheep and will buy any and all Apple products

Seems like a very insecure way to go through life.

And let us know when the Nexus 7 can match the iPad Mini's 35% larger screen.

Blue = Nexus 7 (21.9 sq inches)
Blue + Green = iPad Mini (29.6 sq inches, I.e. 35% larger)

let us know when ipad mini can fit in your pocket. Apple completely missed the point of the 7inch tablet market.

also like to know when mini will have
- GPS
- NFC
- Better screen res
- more ram
- and cost 70% less

No GPS in the Mini, unless you pay pay pay the ridiculous extra!

GPS is a huge feature on these devices to a lot of people.

Neither tablet will fit in your pocket. Even with the 35% larger screen, the overall dimensions of the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 are fairly close, because the Nexus 7 has a massive bezel (border area). The Nexus 7 is also 45% thicker and weighs 10% more.

n7 is a squeeze but fits in more pockets than the mini. Its also more comfortable to hold with one hand according reviews.

Fit in your pocket? Get a iPod touch.

If you think the point of a 7" tablet is to fit in your pocket, you're the one who missed the point of a 7" tablet.

The Nexus 7 feels cheap compared to the Mini which exudes quality. I'd much rather have the Mini.

With that said, I do think the Mini is a bit expensive. Since I already have an iPad 3, I'm not going to get a Mini this time around. Instead, I'm getting a Nexus 7 when the 3G model comes out just to get back to familiarity with the Android experience (I had the original Nexus One) so at least I can learn comment intelligently about both.

The Nexus 7 is really a bargain at the price, but I realize that you get what you pay for.

I think they actually understood the point of a 7" tablet pretty well, and a big part of it is this right here:

Oh, you need a keyboard on the screen?

The Mini has GPS available, NOBODY is asking for NFC (good lord what a reach) and good luck selling your Nexus 7 when you're tired of it. That cheap device suddenly got rather expensive. :p
