Fair enough. Do know that the Apple Watch unlock works very well with mask wearing, I've had no issues since whenever it is that came out. May not apply to your instance, but just mentioned that with the watch mask vs no mask faceID unlock is super easy.

As for phone on and off - that exists via the button on the right side. Click it and the phone screen goes off (sleep) and the phone locks. Same button also works to wake the phone if it didn't already wake from the motion of picking it up.

I'll just say that as someone who's had an iphone since the 3GS, I've been very happy with FaceID vs the prior TouchID. Still have the latter on my ipad mini and wish they'd implement faceID on those.

I am at that point where I could either grab the SE 3 or the 13 mini and be happy either way. However, the camera is important to me.

We’ll see if the camera on the SE 3 gets a spec bump, but it’s not likely. I currently need to be able to take quick snapshots at certain distance with as much quality as possible, so I will compare both cameras when the reviews of the SE 3 are out, and if there’s not a lot of difference, I will probably choose the SE 3rd gen.

I’ve been using the iPhone 8 for long now and I feel so comfortable using it, and the 13 mini is great as well, but at half the price, the SE 3 is going to be very appealing

What I look for in an iPhone:
  • Can run latest iOS
  • Costs as little as possible
Hell even keeping the price the same means the price is higher due to inflation where I live. Actually the iPhone SE1 was half the price as the iPhone SE2 and the SE3 will probably twice what the SE2 was... So yeah.

Self Selection Bias -- the improbability that the survey sample is representative of the overall population.
Indeed.
I am actually shocked such a survey is quoted without any discussion of the result and obvious flaws. If anything it seriously diminishes the confidence one should have in medias that do this...

Will this be a huge upgrade for iPhone 6S+ users?
In terms of features? No. But depending on where their battery health is with their iPhone 6s and the value of what this phone will retail for allegedly and then trade-in of their iPhone 6s, then that would be significant in that regard. But a huge upgrade? No, not even close.

I live in Korea, and we still use masks for Covid. Even before (and after) Covid, we will still be using masks on bad air days. I have heard mixed emotions regarding the updates to work with masks. Besides, I want a physical way to touch my phone on and off. It's as much mental as physical. I want it to be on before it reaches my face. Currently on a Galaxy Note 9, and I have avoided some Android phones because they didn't have good on-screen touch. Some do, others don't.
15.4 resolves this.

I know I'm in the minority (or maybe this "40%"? ;)), but whenever I pick up one of my kids' iPhone 8's, I kind of miss it. Currently have the 13 Mini and generally love it. The SE's default text size is actually a bit bigger than my 13 Mini, and I'm a weird one who still prefers the look of LCD vs OLED. I had the SE for awhile, though, and unless they've found a magical way to really improve the battery life on this new one, I'm afraid that will be a deal killer for me. Some days it was fine, but if my workload required more phone usage, I was reaching for a charger by 5 PM which I don't like. I don't think the A15 itself will be enough unfortunately. But if they can get the battery life on par with the 13 Mini, I'd actually consider it.

I will be honest. I really like Android. But in my opinion, I just see the iPhone pulling away in CPU power, and overall value/longevity. It hasn't even been out a month, and already the new Samsung S22 line has been caught having to throttle its CPU to keep temps in line. Samsung and Apple are basically what we can get in Korea, anymore. LG is gone. Pixel is not allowed in here. Samsung has already downgraded and removed so many features from my old Galaxy Note 9, and charge too much. Lower resolution, no pulseometer, no earphone jack, terrible speakers far worse than my old Note 9. Yep, every Samsung S22 phone, except the ultra, has LOWER resolution than my Note 9. They have systematically removed most of the features that kept me with Android, and downgraded others. The Samsung line really is becoming like a slower iPhone with less resale. I already forsee HEAVY discounts coming on the S22, because so many are going to dump or avoid it due to the throttling. Another frustration -- my daughter's aging A8Star (midranger) has as fast of a CPU, or faster, than new low-mid-range Samsung A-series phones, and it is 3 years old! But she isn't allowed upgrades. It's like Samsung is spinning its wheels and removing features to put them back in later, at a higher price. Or, you can pay more than an iPhone 13 Max just to get MOST of them in the S22 Ultra.

Any iPhone with the iPhone 8's battery capacity is a downgrade in my book.

5G and A15 isn't worth a lot on a device that barely hits the 4-hour mark in most battery drain tests.

A decent phone should at least hit the 5-hour mark to be usable considering average on-screen times for the average smartphone user in 2022. I highly doubt the SE 2020 will go much beyond the 4-hour mark, the battery is just too small.

iPhone 11 is far superior with its 3110 mAh over the SE's 1820 mAh.
I guess it means phone addiction is up high, if 5hrs is barely enough for a day. But I'm out of touch with how the youngins use tiktok, instagram, etc.

I'm using an SE generation 1, and I'm wondering what this new version would offer over my current old phone, which does everything I need. Note: I don't use the camera outside of purely utilitarian purposes, so that's not of interest.

It's funny, in that for years people have laughed at my tiny SE; now everybody seems to want one. If I were to upgrade, I'd probably get a refurbished SE 2.

The cpu throttling thing, while true, is IMO being blown way out of proportion by the enthusiast crowd.

The iPhone never had a pulsometer, has also removed the headphone jack, and only gotten more expensive over the years as well.

Samsung has promised 4 years of major OS support on the new S22 line, and provides 3 on previous flagship lines and does a pretty darn good job of that - significantly better than any other Android OEM (though admittedly still worse than Apple). But you're right, anything other than their flagships is a total crapshoot with regard to future update support.

I tried the S22 for a week and it's a really nice, smooth, well rounded Android experience, with great form factor, and a great camera. I had no issues with battery life either. I really liked it and would've stuck with it; however, I'm just too tied into the iOS ecosystem, especially with clients/friends/family, and the change is too harsh for them... ?‍♂️

Why anyone using an 11 would "upgrade" to a device with a smaller battery, smaller screen and worse camara is beyond me. Sure, the cpu will be slightly faster, but the 11 is still plenty fast. I call BS.

Sure, the SE is the "entry level/compromise" iphone, but it's way overpriced for it's old design and for what it does. Most people who could afford an 11 in the past will surely go for a "regular" iphone.

On the other hand, if true, maybe people don't want to pay €899 upwards for a phone anymore and this is a sign that apple will have to alter it's product strategy in the future. Would't count on it.

(Written from a SE2 with a nice form factor but terrible battery life)
The SE2/SE3 is probably Apple's attempt to nudge people still on the iPhone 6/6s/7/8 to upgrade. Even in this forum, seems to be there are a lot of people still using a 6s/7/8.

I don't think Apple have any problems selling the regular iPhones (12/13) at the $799 price point. The iPhone 13 is turning into another best seller and record breaking. The Apple brand is so good that many people are willing to spend a lot of money for Apple products. The iPhone SE targets a completely different segment.

It reminds me on when Jobs announced the iPod mini, and later the iPod shuffle. Each one of them targets a different segment than the regular iPod.

Don't know why anyone would move from iPhone 11 to SE.
If the battery life was comparable to my 11 I'd consider moving to an SE3.
I prefer the smaller form factor, have no issues with the bezels, and have never liked the notch.
Also, I like TouchID more than FaceID.

Well, I went from an iPhone 11 Pro Max to an iPhone 13 Mini, so I did all that. As to why, it's not as heavy and fits in my pocket better.

That said, 40% buying the SE, no way, no how. But I can certainly see some people buying it to get away from such humungous phones. Touch ID is a nice touch as well. I have it on my Android phone and prefer it over face-id.

5G is a complete and total Gimmick. I have never ONCE seen it being used on my phone despite having a 5G Enabled iPhone. Marketing 5G as some sort of saviour is a total lie.

Maybe you don't live in or close to a big city ?
I've seen 5G quite often here in and around Montreal since I own my iPhone 12.

But let me give you reason : yes, it's a gimmick. It's not (much) faster than LTE. At least not now. And they took a decade to develop this...

In as much as the OP sweeping generalization isn’t correct, nor is claiming it’s not much faster. It really depends on the user’s mobile provider and their location.

I’m on T-Mobile in the US and 5G has been a pretty significant improvement. I will see 300-400 Mbps downloads where on LTE the highest I’d see is 125 Mbps. Also, the strength of signal has been near universally better. I’d previously barely have any signal on LTE at my house but now I will get 1-2 bars of 5G with downloads near 10 Mbps where I’d often never get over 1 Mbps on LTE.

Tech companies are so terrible with these things -Yes, 5G should be a big deal in theory. But irl the network infrastructure just isn't there yet, not im my opinion.

But instead of telling us the truth, it's advertised as this great advancement that changes everything here and now, today.

The way I see it, 5G will be reliable and widespread enough to make a difference for the average person in 5-10 years from now.

That is to say, upgrading your smartphone just for 5G alone is a huge mistake in 2022.

See my statement above—really depends on the user and their network. Also, T-Mobile didn’t require any changes to my mobile plan to receive 5G connectivity.

first thing i did on my 13 Pro, deactivate 5g...for battery ;-)

If you have reliable 5G signal I don’t think this applies. I’ve never shut off 5G connectivity since owning my 12 Pro Max (presently using 13 Pro Max) and battery performance has been as good as or better than any iPhone I’ve owned.

Without knowing much about how survey I find the results difficult to believe. It's like a survey with two options asking them would they buy a Porsche or a Ferrari and then concluding 50% of people are going to buy a Porsche—surveys often don't reflect reality at all.

5G is used on my phone like 99% of the time. It all depends where you live. If you live in some shack in the middle of nowhere like some peasant, don’t be surprised that you’re not getting the full benefit of 5G.

I don’t have a 5G iPhone yet, but I’m using a T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway and I’m routinely getting 300Mbps with two bars where I live in BFE, so YMMV.

People can say what they want about this survey, but the fact is that the SE line is popular and sells very well. There are many people who like the classic form factor especially Touch ID and the notch-less screen, and that 6-8 series design has been refined to almost perfection, very reliable and solid build quality. The £399 price is just the cherry on top. Sure the battery is small, but for light/moderate users its fine, you just have to be realistic with your expectations. I get 36 hrs in between charges on my older SE 2020. Those who use their phones with heavy media usage etc should stick to iphones with larger batteries and screens.

I just switched from the se to the 12 mini last year and I like the 12 mini a lot so I have no interest to go back to a outdated design.

lol I went from the 13 mini to the SE.

I found the mini felt bulkier and was more difficult to use due to lack of bezels. I also couldn’t stand Face ID. Touch ID is far far more convenient and reliable in my experience.

I’ll be upgrading to the new SE.

iPhone 8 owner here (Apple replaced my old iPhone 8 with a brand new one a year ago, long story) BUT battery has degraded significantly with each iOS update, adding AirTags compounded this.

So I'm in the market for an SE, but not one with the same crappy battery. Apple should make the bloody things thicker, especially in this price range - some of us are not in it for svelte good looks, we just want a practical usable device.
