Tom, I have a MacMini (2012) - Built-in HDMI and a StarTech MDP2HDS active adapter that I'd like to try. HD4000, built-in graphics and am comfortable with the command line.

PM me your email address and mention what version of OS X you are running.

Might be able to do it under Windows. I know my rMBP was willing to outuput 2560x1600 @ 60Hz under Windows without issue, but OS X simply refused, even with SwitchResX. That tells me Apple's driver limits bandwidth to 165MHz, even though it should be capable of 340MHz or so.

Do you have a Mac with an HDMI port and would like to help me test a patch that removes the 165 MHz pixel clock limit for HDMI in OS X?

With this patch, you can output 4K @ 24, 25, 30, and 31 Hz from OS X.

If so, PM me, and let me know:
1. What OS X version you are using
2. What video card you have
3. How comfortable you are using the command line

Tom,

The system won't allow me to PM you but I would like to help in the testing...
I'm running OSX 10.8.3 with an HD 3000 card on this Mac Mini. CLI is not a problem.

Update on the patch to remove artificial limits from OS X:

It works fine on my 15" rMBP and I can use my Seiki just fine at up to 31 Hz. HDCP support seems to be broken at higher refresh rates, so I wasn't able to watch a movie I bought from iTunes. IIRC, it breaks somewhere between 17 Hz and 24 Hz.

It also worked fine on a 13" rMBP I tested. I was able to get 4K to work at 24 Hz and 25 Hz. 26 Hz did not work - Seiki showed "Not support". I did not test whether HDCP support was broken.

PM me if you also want to test this on your Mac. I will be releasing it to the public in a couple of days.

Did Tom ever release his patch? I can't find any posts newer than the last month, and wondering if he went dark and won't get my PM

I haven't made it public yet, but anyone interested can get it from me. Just PM me.

My account here was not set up to notify me by email if I get a PM; so some members had to wait a couple of weeks to get a response. That is fixed now.

Tom,

I'm running OSX 10.8.4 on a rMBP and would like to test out the patch.

Patch and tried to PM you Tom

Hello Tom,

I too am interested in the patch. Im tech savy (yet can't get MacRumors to send me a activation link doh) and currently have a hackintosh using a Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 and Intel i7 990x overclocked to 4.2 ghz on Mountain Lion. I can get full 4k res. in Windows 8 @ 30hz but only 18hz in OSX using SwitchResX. My demo just expired and now that doesnt work either but in all honesty as good as 4k looks, its un-usable at 18hz. Everything crawls.

Also the mouse movement is really SLOW, and then choppy if I turn up acceleration.

Please help!

Tom,

I am running iMac 2013 with best video card available..

If you could send this fix to my email, I send it to your Private Message box.

Then I could give it a try and see how it works. Thanks!

Tom, have you a link to the Patch ?

Is the patch usable with a MiniDP to HDMI ?

Tom - would it be possible to patch MDP -> dual-link DVI for faster than 84hz?

Can't PM - could I get the patch? Seiki 39" on 7950 in dual-socket 2010 MacPro (2x 3.46Ghz 6-core, 64GB RAM, quad 4gb FC)

Why I am getting red screen when trying out Seiki 39" on Windows 7? Any ideas? on iMac 2013.

I'm having trouble getting a resolution above 1920x1080 using SwitchResX. I've made a new custom resolution at 3840x2160 using CVT-RB Refresh, however the status is not installed. Restarting didn't seem to make a difference in the status. Any idea where I'm going wrong?

Does the patch work without using SwitchResX? I can't PM yet, but I'd like to test it out.

I would test your patch!

Hey man, I wonder if I could test your patch on my rMBP.

Specifications:
2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel Graphics 4000 (or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - which appears after SwitchResX customizing)
OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

Forum is not allowing me to PM you, could you contact me?

Thank you!

Same for me, I would like to test the patch, but the forum doesn't allow me to PM. Could you contact me?

I've got a 2013 15inch retina macbook pro (2.5Ghz i5)

Hey Tom I would love to get the patch I have a hackintosh running osx 10.8.4
with a core i7 3770k and geforce 660ti 3gb

So, maaaaybe they'll [increase the MBP's resolution to 4K] somewhen in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It probably won't be in the next ten years. By that time, we may not have MBPs anymore.

Tom, you still giving out the patch? I'd love to take a chance on this display, but don't really want to mess with it unless I can get your patch for my mbp (early 2013).
