I remember once shooting in regular non ProRes 4K a 15 minute video and it took ages to transfer via AirDrop.

imagine the nightmare that people without AirDrop have transferring via lightning

iPhones need USB-C asap
i would say Thunderbolt 4 or 10 gbps ethernet port.

If the device can’t handle the pro features, it should be removed from the pro lineup. Start Pro lineups with 256GB!
The Pro should start with 512GB.

256GB is nothing if recording 4k ProRes. What do you get, like 20-30 min? That’s just horrible. If you can’t get at least an hour, it shouldn’t even be an option.

If Apple truly wants a “Pro” phone, they would add USB 4/thunderbolt and the ability to record ProRes to an external SSD plugged directly into the phone. That is the workflow someone recording pro video on the iPhone would want more than anything else. AirDrop, WiFi or over Lighting’s slow USB are all jokes in a professional sense. There is only one true pro solution, direct capture to media you can hand off to an editor. But then it wouldn’t matter how much internal storage you have, 128, 256, 1TB who cares. And 2 ports so you can record and charge at the same time… can’t have that.

I don’t see it happening. Storage has to be one of the top two reasons that drive people to upgrade their phone. Even if they switch to USB-C, you can bet it will only support 2.0 speeds. If Apple put modern USB capabilities in a phone, every 3rd party extended battery case would have a 1TB SSD in it in no time and people would just use Files or a 3rd party app to keep all their photos stored there.

Maybe the iPhone 15 will have 8K
Maybe, but can anyone explain why you would want that? Sure, it’s more resolution and you can crop scenes for 4K, but let’s get real. This is a phone camera sensor. As much magic as the iPhone does it still can’t compete with a real camera. Plus there aren’t any affordable 8k TV’s, most people’s eyes wouldn’t be able to tell the difference with 4K unless over 100” screen, and pixel binning to 4K is going to result in a better looking image anyways, not to mention much smaller file sizes. Plus if apple is going to offer 8k video they probably would want all rear cameras to be able to record that as opposed to just one.

Lol good enough with studio lighting light any modern sensor, but nothing compared to a RED especially in the dark.

Of course. They don’t use them because the quality is better.

It’s that you can’t fit a red camera on a drone and if you are using one in a hazardous situation it’s 20-30k on the line for a high end red vs a couple of grand for an iPhone pro.

Agreed but you know the iPhone is eventually going to get USB 4 when that trickles down from the m series chips.

Your not throwing away anything? Do you know what compression is?

You would rather shoot 1080p RAW than 4k without RAW? What is your end goal in post?

What happens if you shoot uncompressed 4k to 1080 ProRes?
Unless you want to crop, 4K does not offer a lot of benefit. However if you can't recover shadows or skies, that really spoils the video. You can throw away the RAW after post processing, as storage is limited, but then you do not need it any more anyway.

i mean if you want, apple can make 256gb the base model and increase prices by $100
It costs them pennies to upgrade 128 vs 256. This isn't 2012. It is gouging customers.
Let me put it in language you understand; they will eventually sell less product, thus damaging shareholders.

My initial thought was like many here - Apple upselling to grab more money but in all honesty this isn't some new nefarious scheme that Apple under Cook's direction cooked up to grab more money.

Apple has been selling "Good-Better-Best" for decades now
Except Apple's product lines weren't so fragmented back then.
If I want an iPhone 14, I have... 14 versions to choose from, and that's not counting colours.

It'd be nice if Apple offered 256 as the base for both Pro models. But I ordered the 128 because I don't really care about 4K ProRes video -- and I assume most who do care about it had already upgraded beyond 256. And wasn't this the case for the iPhone 13 Pros as well?

Don't worry Apple fans, a $3000 - $4000 model will be available in the near future that has 8TB of storage for all that 4K video you want to take :)

The fact is, Apple says, on it's website, on the iPhone Pro Marketing 'Learn More' page, the following:

"The only smartphone in the world that lets you shoot, view, edit, and share in ProRes or Dolby Vision HDR"

...and fails to add ; 'But only If you buy the 256GB (or more) upgrade'

That seems like a bit of a glaring omission to me.

The majority of European countries have rightfully abolished their monarchies and they’re all doing just fine without them. Like it or not, the royals in the UK are living on borrowed time and they know it. It’s the pinnacle of elitism, unearned privilege and a symbol of Britain’s dark empire/colonialist past. Monarchy is NOT compatible with the modern world we live in.

How many people are really going to be capturing 4k pro res on an iPhone. Im sure they will be using a better camera :) And if you are just get the 256. Att and other carriers have great trade in plans.

The fact that they are selling the base model with 128gb is ridiculous still. Upsell away. Pro device that you have to upgrade to use all the Pro features.

No it’s not. I bought the 256 last year and never went past 100gb.

Should keep reading.
If you're being pedantic - yes - you're right.
But if I was being pedantic, I might say that I was referring to the Overview page, as stated.

LOL You literally just proved my point. If you didn’t need 256GB then why did you buy it?!?

Again, the point isn’t necessarily that it starts at 128GB, but that you can’t use all the “Pro” features in that model. They advertise a feature that you can’t use in the base model. I don’t care if they put a disclaimer somewhere later on it’s still a gimped “Pro” model that you can’t update to use said feature without buying a different device.
