I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but my gripe is that this is the pro model and not all features are available across all pro models. I ordered the phone expecting the only difference to be storage size.
Just a question, but did you "assume" there was no further differences. Or did you "know" there was no further differences between Pro models? As I believe last year the same issue existed. If you wanted "all" the Pro features, you needed the 256GB version (or higher).

I assumed. Like i mentioned in my original post, this is my first time ordering a pro.

So when someone already ordered a 128GB model without knowing ProRes is for 256GB and up (as apple didn’t say a word during this years keynote), they should cancel it and wait additional 1-2 months for the new charge? Here in Switzerland the new charge is estimated at 13-20 Oct.

Imho that’s not fair. Don’t call it a Pro then
Fairly sure this issue existed on the last iPhone as well. And there must be dozens of YouTube reviewers covering this before the phone went on Pre-Sale.
If you're aware of the release, I'm fairly sure you're aware of the reviewers and the site (which will tell you about this limitation). Do some basic research on the device you're spending over $1,000US on.

I am surprised the base model isn't 256GB at this point.
It took some time (long) for Apple to remove the 64GB model iPhones. Same issue again.

As I read through lots of posts here. There are those that state they would be fine with a 64GB "Pro" iPhone.
And the 128GB is plenty of space. Personally, I'm only about 30GB away from filling my existing iPhone Pro 12 with 128GB of storage. Which is why I opted for the 256GB this time. Plus I would like to play around with 4K ProRes/RAW. I immediately went to YouTube to see whom had a review of the products. To see if there was anything I missed. Sure enough, same 256GB minimum on ProRes video.

They most likely will up that storage minimum after all this supply chain/chip shortage stuff is over with. And raise prices too, unfortunately.

It is really shortsighted to expect the millions of people who order iphones every year to go out and watch all these review videos on youtube. Not everyone goes about this in the same way. Not everyone watches the keynotes! It's not unrealistic to expect that there is feature parity across all models of a particular line of devices.

They could also go to Apple's site and look up more information on the phone.
I would be a bit more in your camp here, except for the fact that this was the same issue with last years Pro 128GB phone. https://www.apple.com/iphone-14-pro/specs/

I'll agree with you that not everyone watches the keynotes. But, if your aware of when the Pre-Sale date is. You must be informed "enough" to at least take a look on the site and find out anything you didn't get to see from the presentation. If the idea is that we just purchase first and ask questions later then.. This is what we end up with.

Great points all around. I'm not upset enough to go and cancel and try to get a 256 but on pre order day all i was focused on was getting a launch day delivery :) I'm on macrumors, clearly i'm of a demographic that typically does do research on this stuff. If work wasn't so crazy this week I most likely would have spent more time researching but alas, all I could watch was the keynote. edit: And yes, while I realize now that this isn't a departure from last years model, I was unaware of that cause I had a regular 13.

Again, cancel your order and purchase what’s right for you.

Easy.

‘Burner phone’ makes you sound like Jason Borne 🤣😂 but this is for the explanation. Makes sense for beta tests for sure.

“Burner phone” more typically implies “meth dealer” in most places these days.

There are plenty of people that will be getting a Pro that don't need 4k ProRes.

Me for example - I have never ever used proRes, and tbh wouldnt even know how to. not everyone is a video content creator. The most i use videos for is capturing moments with the family.

However, I do take photos (amatuer photography), and absolutely love the 120hz screen option.

Even with all my music, photos etc on my 13 im about to sell, i'm only upto 70GB used of 128.

Paying for 256GB for a feature i'd never use doesnt make any sense, so i'm glad that option still exists

I guess it doesn’t bother me because files sizes are too large for me to effectively use anyway. If you’re using it for work or something and can write-off a 1TB model that’s one thing, but for capturing family stuff here and there 4K proRes just isn’t practical. At 6GB per minute my gut reaction would be they need to come up with a better solution.

Only uninformed, naive customers. Do you really think AirPod Pros are really used by professional audio engineers?

Yes but the AirPods aren't used by professional audio engineers that feature in Apples marketing campaigns. Unlike the iPhone Pro... they seem happy to use all these well know 'professional' photographers and videographers to promote the 'pro' features of the iPhone Pro cameras. And the 'naive' customers will see that.

That is typical Apple ********. If you have a 128GB model and still 80GB left, why not let you film a 10 minute clip in 4K ProRes?
That wouldn't be good for you or your iPhone.
By the way, even some very cheap smartphones offer external storage. Apple could also offer external recording for example, if it had USB 3.2 instead of that slow Lightning connector.
People complain about the dongles enough to have to strap a USB-C cable to an external drive. Just because you didn't get a larger capacity iPhone. If you need the space, purchase it. I think there is some assumption that the end user will "know" what they intend to do with the device. If that includes lots of 4k ProRes video. You are more than likely going to need more storage space to hold all of that locally so you can keep recording and edit it.
iCloud space is wonderful but you're not going to edit from the cloud. At least not yet.
It's also very possible the 128GB is not fast enough to keep up with 4k ProRes recording. Similar situation with the M2 MacBook Air. And I'm sure someone will say, well just put 2x 64GB if it is a speed issue. Well, what if you can't get enough of them? What if the price isn't justifiable? Or any number of other logistical/manufacturing/availability issues.

Additionally, what's the storage speed offered by those other cheap phones? How much read/write speed is there on that "external" or microSD card slot? Compared with the internal speed on an iPhone 13 or 14 (pro)? I'm sure its not the same or enough to cover 4k ProRes.
At the very least because its a cheap Android, it's definitely not a Pro level device to even offer 4k ProRes as an option to record in. I've never seen any Ad or any one show "shot on cheap Android with microSD card storage @ 4k 24/30/60 HDR-Dolby Vision". Just saying.

I literally never plan to use ProRes, and barely use 64GB of memory, let alone 128gb, but MR forums would rather I pay more for the phone just so the feature I don’t use isn’t limited in a way I don’t care about.

There is more to the phone than shooting in a format that most people wouldn’t even know how to use.

I hope this ends in a well deserved class-action lawsuit, the “main advertisement” does not include any * pointing to the limitation.

what's funny was this was last years problem/discussion. just go back to last year's conversation 😆 to find the epic conclusion to this thriller

Pro Res is great to have if you're using your phone in the field for pick up shots, to be edited on your NLE later. I do it now with my 12. Ill need to compare to the Galaxy S22 ultra thought before i upgrade. Not much of an apple fan these days.

It's so funny to watch people on this forum lose their **** over something they misunderstood. Like... maybe double check or do a minimal amount of research before posting on a public forum? :)
