You can't compare a 90's mid range TV set to a mid range 4K TV set of today. Today's 4K TV blows even the best 90's TV set away. You said in the 90's you could get a nice mid range 32 inch flat screen for about $500. The same TV today you can get for a couple hundred bucks. Tell me what the price of that 8K TV is in a couple years.

Of course TV's are better today.

But compare prices of Cutting edge tech today vs the 90's and the prices have not dropped.

I can buy an iPhone 3GS for $50 TODAY. Thats not the point. My point is what did a cutting edge TV cost in the 90's? What does a cutting edge TV cost today? I doubt the price was more expensive in the 90's.

Seriously, just look at a Radio Shack ad from the 90's and all of those items are several times cheaper now, before you even factor in inflation.

Yes. And you can buy an iPhone 3GS for $50 today.

Thats not the point.

The point is compare how much a cutting edge TV cost in the 90's to what it cost today. I doubt you will find a price drop.

TV's absolutely were more expensive back then. Comparing a 32" tube TV to $133k 8k TV is insane, what kind of comparison is that? You also seem to forget about inflation, but today you can get a 30-something" LCD TV for a couple hundred bucks, compared to a 30-something" tube TV for 3-4x that.

Look at video cameras and digital cameras. Those were thousands back in the 90's, compared to $50-$100 now for a basic one.

Seriously, just look at a Radio Shack ad from the 90's and all of those items are several times cheaper now, before you even factor in inflation.

Those aren't really "cutting edge", they are on par with many other flagship phones. In fact Samsung has a superior display, mobile payment system, etc. What he was talking about was something cutting edge like a flexible phone, holographic display, teleportation device, etc. Something that hasn't been done before.

The iPhone is a status symbol to many, especially kids/teens, and most would rather have an iPhone 6 over an older model, even if it means less storage.

I agree, I can't believe he is actually comparing a 30ish inch tube TV of the 90's to a 85 inch 8K TV of today. Crazy. Plus the fact that the 8K TV just came out. Of course the price is going to be high. But next year the price will drop big time, the year after that the price will drop big time even more as more and more 8K TV sets came out. His comparisons are totally ridiculous.

My whole point is cutting edge tech is NOT cheaper today than in the 90's.

Playstation 1 launched at $299
Playstation 4 launched at $399

Tech does not ALWAYS get cheaper. OLD tech does.

Another example

First Walkman was $150
First iPod was $399

Motorolla Razr $499
iPhone 1 $750?

Don't tell me cutting edge tech is cheaper now than before.

I'm talking about what was cutting edge in the 90's vs what is cutting edge TODAY.

Cutting edge TV's in the 90's did not cost more than cutting edge TV's today.

I'm not forgetting about inflation. That is one reason why a price hike for the iPhone would be okay. We are talking about almost 10 years of inflation next year.

Apple is cutting edge.

When the 5s came out did anyone else have TouchID?
When the 6 came out did anyone else have ApplePay equivelant?
Does anyone else have 3d touch?

Of course Samsung copies all that stuff 6 months later.

When the 5s came out did anyone else have TouchID? Yes, Apple was not the first to come out with TouchID.
When the 6 came out did anyone else have ApplePay equivelant? Yes, Google already had Google Wallet and the NFC payment system.

still cutting edge.

Anyone can dream up a feature and release a half-azz version.

Competitors had swipe ID, which was horrible.
They had google wallet that sucked, thats why no one used it.

Apple's versions were cutting edge because the actually WORKED.

Apple are rarely the first to do things these days but they have mastered the art of arriving late and doing it better. TouchID and Apple Pay are the two more recent examples I can think of.

I can't believe this thread has gone on for so long. The arguments are getting circular, and how much simpler can it be said than this:

Apple increased the storage capacity of the upper two tiers to entice an upsell. Their goal is to increase the average selling price of the new iPhone, thereby increasing profit margin for shareholders.

Could they have offered a 32gb bottom tier at the same price and still made a profit? Sure, but not as much, and there wouldn't have been as much incentive to upsell. The question of whether they SHOULD or SHOULDN'T have done this is a philosophical one, and there is no final answer here.

The bottom line is that the market dictates what happens. If people turn away from Apple for not increasing the bottom tier to 32gb, then they'll remedy it with the next iteration. If it works out as planned - where more people buy the higher tier models - then they'll consider it a success and do it again. If you don't like what they've done, don't buy.

Next years line up should be

32/64/128/256
$700/$750/$850/$950

A $50 raise in price after almost 10 years of inflation is fair.

There is a difference in comparing average products like your typical household TV and a typical smartphone, to the absolute most expensive product in a category, like your $133k TV.

The iPhone is your typical high end smartphone, it's not the most expensive smartphone on the planet.

I do get what you're saying, you can't compare a 36" tube TV in the 90's to a 36" tube TV today, but you can compare it to a 46" 1080p LCD TV today which is what I'd consider your average household TV in both the 90's and today. And today you can find those for a few hundred dollars.

I'll reference back to digital cameras, back in the late 90's they were thousands for your average point and shoot. Compare that to today where you can get an average point and shoot for $100.

Next years line up should be

32/64/128/256
$700/$750/$850/$950

No, if anything prices should be cut by $50. $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB, and $799 for 128GB. The iPhone of 2007 was a lot more groundbreaking and costly to build than it is today.

People aren't buying phones for $99 or $199 on contract, they are seeing the full retail price and it's harder to justify the cost. Look at the iPad, practically the same internals except it doesn't make phone calls, and it's half the price.

The mainstream TV of the early 90's was a 27 inch tube for about $400.
Today's mainstream TV is a 50 inch 1080p for about $400-$500.

Prices have not gone down at all.

point and shoot cameras are a dead industry. Thus the cheap prices.

But so many things cost more today than 2007. Labor cost more. Admin cost more. Shipping cost more. Ect.

Not really. Virtually all the carriers offer $0 payment plans. Most will only concern themself with the monthly payment of $25. Its just like the auto industry. Many don't even care about the total cost of the car, just as long as they can make the monthly payment. And now with leasing deals by Apple/Tmobile its even better and phone price does not even matter.

Except cost of electronics have gone down. 32GB of flash today is peanuts to what it was half a decade a go. This is why you can get a functioning Raspberry Pi for $25, which would have been unheard of years ago.

The MacBook line has also gotten cheaper over the years.

Yes flash has gone down but that is not really a significant part of the cost of building an iPhone. The more expensive parts are the display/glass, CPU, and labor costs (talking admin employee costs, R&D salaries, ect). Those have not really gone down in price at all.

The Macbook line has gotten cheaper because of less demand for laptops but also stalls in innovation. There really isn't much more you can do with a laptop at this point that the customer will notice. Smartphone innovation has not stalled yet, so it can command rising prices. This has been proven somewhat by the iPhones rising average selling price since the 6 came out.

This is just my perspective but if a person is into 4K enough to have a TV when hardly anything supports it, then they won't be shorting themselves with a 16GB phone.

I'm going 16gigs and I have no interest in 4K.

So why do you think it's fine for Apple to charge $100 between each model, and be so cheap when it comes to the base model?

Apple is not ripping off 16GB buyers. Like I said numerous times the profit margin on the 16GB is the lowest so its actually the best deal.

The truth is if Apple priced the 16/64/128GB at exactly the same profit margins the 16GB would cost a whole lot more.

The truth is the 64/128GB buyers are subsidizing the 16GB buyers.

Again Apple's profit margins are only 21%. There are so many additional costs Apple has that people forget about. Companies like Samsung/LG pay a fraction of what Apple pays for R&D, retail stores, OS development and maintenance, App store costs, ect. They just copy Apple's innovations and rely on free Android for OS.

Historically CUTTING EDGE personal technology DOES go up in price.

Look at the most expensive TV's now vs the 90's. Todays CUTTING EDGE Tv's cost more. alot more. Cutting edge projectors cost more today than in 1970. Cutting edge speakers cost more than in the 80's. Look at video games systems. Cost more now than when the NES came out. Goes on and on. The only time the prices go down is when innovation or progress stalls.

For example in the 90's the top end TV sets were about $3k. Now they go up to $20k easily.

Yes, old models do get cheaper, but not CUTTING EDGE TECH. And the new iPhones are CUTTING EDGE.

A Camry in 2007 started at $18,400
A Camry in 2015 starts at $22,900
That is an increase in price of 24%

People should be happy the iPhone has not increased in price ONE CENT in the same time period.

Heard of inflation ??? Geez seriously this has to be the biggest fail of a post I have seen. YOU are also earning more in 2015 than in 2007....

your camry example is silly, let's roll with that.

2007 to 2015 : 24% increase

iPhone

2007 - 399 2015 - 650 :62%

Buying a mobile phone new today with 2007 components will be around...$50 or less?

So has your salary increased by around 24% or 62%?? (Same job) . Think about it.

The iPhone is padded with so much profit mate! And it's cutting edge tech !

About anything ?

I'm critical about Apple.

For example they took too long to bring out the larger screen iPhones.
I did not like that they are not bringing out a new iPad Air this year.
Wish they made ad-blocking a native App.
Need I go on?

Regardless iPhone are still the most cutting edge phone on the planet.

Biometric ID, Mobile Payments both sucked before iPhone.
iPhone was the first with 64 bit.
First with Metal platform for games.
Health Kit first.
Home Kit first.
3D touch first.
Multi-touch first.
Retina screen first.
All metal design first.
First with touch keyboard.
Need I go on?

Are you making a joke here?

I clearly said to compare an average TV in the 90's to an average TV today. Today a 27 inch TV isn't average. Just like a phone with a 3.5 inch screen isn't average. Of course prices go down FOR OLD TECH. That's like saying the price of iPhones are going down since you can buy an iPhone 3GS for $50 TODAY.

The median price of TV's today is just as high or higher than it was in the 90's.

WRONG!!!

The iPhone was not $399 in 2007. That was the CONTRACT price!!! You were locked into a 2 year contract with AT&T. IF you wanted to buy it out of contract it would cost you about $650 just like today!!!

So iPhones have basically stayed the same price since 2007 while cars have gone up 20%.

The iPhone does not make as much profit as you think. Apple financials prove it. Last year the companies profit margin was only 21%. So an average $650 product only nets Apple $135 in profit.
