Apple already stated that they much prefer their current IPS technology over OLED or AMOLED offerings as the picture is better and they can readily gain access to IPS screens.

There already are two versions of the iPad IMO. They just call the first one the iPod Touch. I can see them adding different sizes later, but not that soon.

Still I'm hoping for a v1.5 iPad in November with more RAM (512 like the iPhone4), and at least one camera. A higher resolution display would be nice, but I don't think they could do that big of Retina display yet.

OLED competes against LCD not LED just for the record. OLED and LCD are panel technologies. LED is a backlight technology.

The current iPad screen isn't an LED screen. IT's an LCD screen with LED backlights.

I can't see Apple using OLED when they went with the Retina LCD display in the iPhone. ONe reason they did that is because OLED washes out in sunlight. Given 5" and 7" ipads would be even more portable than the current one I don't believe they would be using an OLED screen in them.

Also don't believe they would make that many sizes of Ipads. Doesn't sound like Apple. One maybe.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Personally I think this will lead to iPad platform fragmentation, something Android phones are suffering but the iPhone has managed to avoid by keeping the line consistent.

I hope this is just rumor and speculation; I'm not convinced it will be good for the iPad market and developers. Too hard to maintain an app for all the various permutations.

3 versions of an iPad...? COMPLETELY unnecessary.

And completely never going to happen.

I don't get these sites (Not MR) they seem to just say dumber and dumber things every year.

Apple is all about simplifying the product line. Doing this just confuses the customer. Also pisses off developers because then we gotta check to make sure everything is good on another device.

The time frame for these product launches is just absurd. They actually think people will believe Apple will launch the next gen version in less then 8 months after the first one.

There wont be the next iPad until next year. Probably the same time frame as the first one or Apple will push it back to WWDC.

This is the same crap as with a Verizon iPhone saying there will be on this year or early next year.

Last I checked, there are only 2 devices in the wild that have OLED screens larger than 5 inches and one of them got cancelled. Plus, no OLED manufacturer can produce millions of screens a month. Heck, there are even shortages of the much simpler cellphone-sized screens!

No, this analyst is speaking from his rear. There will be no updated iPad this year. To try and do that is to throw sand in people's faces.

Not so sure that there aren't any larger than 5in. I believe NAMCO is making slot machines with stacked OLED displays that are in the 18-20 inch range. They are OLED unless there is a transparent LCD panel in manufacture somewhere. They are stacked and transparent to give the operator a cheap 3D effect.

I've always wanted a 5 inch iPod, but I don't want a 5 inch iPad. They're practically the same thing though, right? :D

Smaller??? Why? The next one should be larger; give me a 13" or 14" - something on which a full 8.5x11 page will fit without "pinching" it smaller. Now that would be something that would make me sell my 10" iPad on eBay in a heartbeat. :D

this is clearly not happening.....

if it was Gizmodo would have had some stolen prototypes by now...

the only reason Gizmodo was able to obtain the phone in the first place was due to the fact that Apple employee had to put the phone down. After all, holding it causes dropping calls, what option did the poor guy have?

now... if iPad shuts off when holding, we might very well have some very juicy leak infos

I suspect that DigiTimes are wide of the mark here, particularly since Apple seems to be very much wedded to IPS rather than OLED, or variants thereof. Further, I don't much see the point of an iPad that is smaller than what is already available, particularly when you have the iPod Touch.

Really unlikely.

As stated OLEDs are already in short supply, there is no way they can make them to Apple numbers.

5.6" and 7"? Ridiculous. This is Apple. We will be lucky to see one size between the iPod Touch and iPad. We certainly won't see two.

This rumor doesn't have any more credibility than fanboy wishful thinking.

Eh... I suspect this, as with a previous rumour about that mini-sized touch screen, and the pre-iPad rumours about screen sizes, are all based on a common thing.

Apple get sample screens, that are sized purely for testing the screen materials not any device. Apple having :apple: branded samples of 5.6 inch and 7 inch OLED screens, does not mean there is a 5.6 screened OLED device being in production. It doesn't even mean there's a prototype device. It means those were the sized of the sample screens Apple commissioned to do materials and capabilities testing.

This story really deserves to be on Page 2.

this is ********.

Steve Jobs destroyed the OLED when he presented the iPhone 4.
Each new screen format need app reformulation and adaptation, the ipad is still gaining momentum with its applications, a new screen format will fragment unnecessarily the app market.

The iphone has the same screen size (not resolution) since the beginning,
the iPad size probably is a long time bet too, we will not se his screen size change, the only chance is for they to change the resolution.

This should be second page history.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this either. 3 different sizes, wifi, 3G+wifi....what's next?

I think the standard iPad size is fine for everything.

Haha can u even imagine the world.

to targe e-book reader, are those iPads capable of letting people read the screen for hours without suffering eye-bleeding?

or is apple still stand by its statement that people just don't read for a long period of time?

I've become an almost-not-quite iPad reading convert. It's definitely not as nice to read as the Kindle. But with the brightness dialed down and sometimes the contrast reversed, it's pretty comfortable for longer reads. The book apps have convenient brightness sliders and other controls so you don't have to jump back to settings.

What makes it win out over the Kindle is the interface - responsive dictionaries and such. Navigation on the Kindle has always been its weak point.

All I know Sep 7th is two months away

start your rumor mongering ...

i want to see a Phone with iPod for $299 with out data plan or contract ... there is a huge market for this outside of US where they cannot afford data plan or there is no infrastructure available for that (eg. India, China and ... )

initially iPhone project started with putting an iPod in a Phone, now it does lots of other things and costs lots of expenses also ...

I want bigger, not smaller!

TWSS

The ipad is a little big and a little heavy so I think its a good idea

Really? A pound and a half. If it's heavy do literally 2 push-ups a day for a week. I'm sure you'll be able to handle it.

Not like my textbooks for school are 8 pounds each. I just couldn't imagine holding a device that weighed a pound and a half. How do you guys do it?
