Fanboy aside.... This was a rushed product. A lot of what seems to be an afterthought or completely disregarded. Sloppy UI elements, incongruent spacing, finicky gestures and a hit or miss facial recognition. This was definitely a “me too!” design.

I can easily tell that you like to take a balanced, measured, logical approach to your reviews.

I'm so happy with all of you apple bashers who won't be ordering the phone. That will make it easier for the rest of us to get one.

Still includes USB A lightening cable and USB A charger in the box. Seriously? Give us a proper USB C lightening cable since you only provide USB C for MacBook and MacBook Pro already.

I was wondering about that too. Just eyeballing it, I thought it would be a little bit smaller. Thought about looking up the numbers and doing the math but then got lazy.

I think a lot of people don't realize that the display is a little wider too, but the same UI point width, so everything should be a little bit larger. By my math, everything on the display should appear nearly 7% larger. Not a huge difference, but if it was it would look goofy. Anything is welcome! Larger text and tap targets are always a good thing.
how can iphone plus that has fullhd and 400 ppi be bigger area than an 5.8" (5.72" if we consider that cutout from top) with 468 ppi?!

Aspect ratio. The iPhone Plus is 16:9. The iPhone X is 19.5:9. The iPhone Plus is wider. The diagonal is just the measurement between the corners. Look up Pythagorean Formula.

With the simplified status bar UI, do we lose the "back to app" text in the top left when an app launches us into a different app? Are we back to needing to use the multitasking selector to pick the previous app? Or is there a multi-finger side swipe that goes back?

Complete nonsense, opinion masquerading as fact devoid of any empirical evidence.
Well, they’re right about some things for sure. The UI is dreadful. Who wants to watch videos with a glaring notch on one side? And it appears full screen vids are also masked in the corners due the display curves. Of course it’ll go through evolutions until the UI feels “right”. And one hopes that they have better touchscreen tech, because as an owner of many iOS toys I find swiping from the bottom or top to be hit or miss - especially on ios11 with my iPad. (Worryingly it’s in gold Master now so we’ll have to wait for improvements). With such a critically important function being tied to that gesture... well thats worrying.

But where that user said the interface design feels rushed, maybe it’s not that as such but that they’re dealing with something very new. And that they need time to learn how to make it work better. Personally I really hope they get rid of that notch by the 2nd gen. Maybe a full width bar? They are allowed, Apple.

I’m actually fairly uninterested in the X. I’m getting the 8 plus.

You and me both
If I had to upgrade now, I'd pick the iPhone 8 over the iPhone X as well. That said, I'm fine with my iPhone 6s for a while.

I think the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s are likely going to be the equivalent of the 2012 non-retina MacBook Pro, before Apple stopped production: products that sell as well as, if not better than, the newer, flashier offerings that Apple is touting. Apple won't publicize it, but I'll bet they're gonna be surprised by the numbers. ~$450 for a phone that is nearly the same by any practical measurement? Yeah, plenty of smart people are going to make that choice.

like i said, we have 5.85" if we include the "ears" without them, we have 5.71" vs 5.5", and we have a lot more pixels in a bigger diagonal
YOu cant beat math :)

Apple has officially introduced the iPhone X, its new flagship smartphone with dozens of new features. It won't be available until November 3, but here's a preview of 50 changes and improvements coming.

I'm sick of fighting my own nature. iPhone X is a great product. I shouldn't buy it. I don't have the money to buy it. I'm going to buy it.

iPhone Plus:
1920/401 = 4.79" tall
1080/401 = 2.69" wide
Total area: 12.89sqin

iPhone X:

2436/458 = 5.32" tall
1125/458 = 2.46" wide
Total area: 13.09sqin

Subtract out the notch and round corners and it's a smaller surface area.

You can't beat math. Also, the iPhone X display doesn't support landscape for the home screen (based on tests at the hands-on area), which also probably means that it doesn't support iPhone Plus-style landscape layouts.

yes, that time traveler happened to be an android user from 5 years ago lol

With Android's performance relative to iPhones, you'd think the "time traveler" keeps traveling into 1-2 years ago with his SoCs ;)

I just purchased the w29 charger for my iPad Pro 12.9 so I'm very excited about being able to use it for the iphone x. This just confirms more so that I do want the iPhone x despite of the price! I cannot tell you how paranoid i am about accidentally plugging the w29 into my iPhone 7. I know it's gonna happen sooner or later...

Why would that be a problem? The iPhone 7 won't care if you plug the 29 watt charger into it. It just won't charge much faster than a 10 watt iPad charger. The Phone will just draw what it can use and nothing more.

They left out "annoying notch on the side that obscures videos/photos"

I've seen this stated a lot, but I read that while watching videos you can choose to hide the notch by making the entire strip be black. Then it's still better then other iPhones because the screen is sharper, better colors, and still nearly as big as a "Plus" model.

Until someone actually uses one of these, I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the UI.

I agree that it's a great product and I actually do have the money for it, but I'm going to have to pass. I need at least 128GB storage and I just can't justify having to spend $1,149 in order to get the 256GB model. I'll just hang on to my iPhone 7 for another year and see where things stand next September.

Nobody has mentioned these huge advantages of Face ID over Touch ID:

--Face ID works with gloves! (but maybe not sunglasses, then again I find the screen hard to see with sunglasses anyway)

--Have you ever tried Touch ID while your hands were even slightly sweaty or wet? It doesn't work well. Face ID will solve that issue.

Amazing engineering as always. But the real question isn’t what can the phone do better? The question to ask is What can the user do better? And is it worth paying more for?

I actually think Face ID will be way more of a convenience the most think. It's just a simpler security method without even having to use your fingerprint to unlock the phone. Assuming this Is as secure as Apple is stating, I think this is going to be a bright future for it.

Regarding your uncertainty if Face ID will work with sunglasses. Here is the quote I pulled from an article listed below and the link to it.

"Apple doesn't mention sunglasses. There's a chance that Face ID doesn't work when wearing sunglasses because it obscures your eyes, and eye contact is required for unlocking the device. Attention aware can be disabled, though, so Face ID may work with sunglasses in that situation. "

My feelings on the X are mixed:
  • I didn't think that the notch would bother me but seeing the screen display it does.
  • The price is high. It may be justified but it is extremely expensive for a phone.
  • Very impressed with the cameras and the apparent ability to handle low light and noise reduction.
  • Have no interest in Emoji's, Animoji's or face mapping my expressions to an animated character. I don't care if it exists however.
  • Not sure about AR. Depends on what uses are developed for it.
  • Stereo sound out of the phone depends on how good it sounds, within reason. Can't expect too much from small speakers.
  • Lack of stereo phono jack: *#!!?#{+€¥!!!
  • Improved Bluetooth. No idea what benefits this could bring or what current or new features would use it. May be impressed once I find out or may not really care.
  • Wireless charging. Equipment is not available and expensive when it becomes available. May be something I will wonder how I lived without or maybe a giant 'meh'.

The number of new features on this phone is amazing. It really feels like something a time traveler dropped off from the future. I just hope iPhone 8 sales don't suffer too much, everyone wants an X!

Honestly, I've seen so much negativity surrounding the X that hopefully preorder night won't be too bad for it!

You don't have to wait for the Apple-branded charging pad. You can use it on any Qi devices.

True, and I find that a welcome change from Apples usual proprietary components philosophy. But what I would want would be the pad, not just a phone charger. Maybe those already exist as well.

IF I get a X it may be a moot point because the charging equipment may exist by then also.
