Can’t they just measure the percentage of people who do not already have a Mac on their Apple ID? This percentage is then classified as “new to the Mac.”

They could also conduct surveys, but in this case it may not be necessary.
You wrongly assume that people use a Apple ID.

I do not on my MacBook. I use nothing in the Apple cloud. Most of it is a joke and I easily use other vendors. I get no software from the Mac App Store.

It is not a iPhone…..yet.

How do they know?
They have a few ways of knowing (first time Mac users). First are those questionnaires and surveys.

Another one is that Apple can extrapolate first time users as those who are creating brand new Apple ID accounts, and their brand new names (First Name, Last Name), home addresses, email addresses, credit cards, etc.... have NEVER been registered in any Apple database in the past.

Not the point but I have never seen the Mac Studio next to the MBP before and it looks truly ridiculous. Industrial design is clearly taking a hit at Apple, which is a bummer.

Many times a user will need to launch a few applications at the start of their day:
Mail,
Safari, Chrome or Firefox,
Word, Pages, etc etc.
Logic,
FCP

Why do we NEED to be forced through all the ADs which are splash screened dead centre?!!!
Why can the notification area be used to alert the user which app has been initialized to launch?!
Well, if you need to launch all these applications each morning then you are using it wrong. Macs are supposed to be put to sleep at night, not to be totally turned off. Once they wake up all is already in place an ready to go.

Second, on Apple Silicon, launching apps is so fast that you won't even notice the splash screens.

It's funny how people here trip up over how Apple counts a new Mac customer. They could have done it in many ways. They could have used internal data or surveys. You can easily get statistically significant results by surveying a small fraction of new Mac purchasers.

Great news. The more people that use Macs, the more software companies will jump on board with AS native versions. And the more MS will have a rocket up its butt to get Windows, and all its other software working slick on ARM. I really look forward to full functioning Windows VM's on AS Mac, as it is the one major impediment for a lot of users.
But there are fully functioning Windows VMs on Mac - even with ARM native Office. They run very well.
In addition there is X86 emulation (Quemu, UTM), so you can even run old software, that doesn‘t work on Win11/ARM.
Last but not least, some stuff can run via Wine/CrossOver as MacOS under Rosetta.

The only thing that is missing is an officially licensed Windows version, but with the MS/Qualcomm deal expired, there is no reason for this not to happen, as it seems to be in MS best interest.

In my experience, the trickle down effect is also great at the moment.
Many users cannot stand their 2015-2020 MacBooks any more and put them on Craigslist/eBay where people who only perhaps had iPhones and or iPads gobble them up for cheap as their first Macs (because they heard good things). And these used desaster Macs are really cheap at the moment.
What this will do to the brand remains to be seen. Some will probably hate the models they are buying, others will love them despite all their flaws.

Why is the  apple logo on the MacStudio of this article’s thumbnail washed out as if it were white or light gray? The MacStudio’s  is full black.

New Macs need activation.
Activation needs an Apple ID.
If you need to create an Apple ID you are a new Apple user.

That would be my guess.
You could have an AppleID from your iPhone and never used a Mac before!
You could have used Macs before and decided to use your AppleID on a Mac for the first time.
I said it, I repeat it, whatever way they got that 50% number is flawed!

There's a word for form without function: sculpture.

Sure, a nice form is nice, and it's good to have sweated the details. But not if it's at the expense of user power -- as was the case with the cylinder Mac and the utter trainwreck of the 2016-era laptops.
And if its function without form - a pc:

Do you think Apple doesn’t know if an Apple ID has been used with a Mac before or not?
