btw, what does IMO and IMHO mean in these posts?

in my opinion
and
in my humble opinion.

you may also see AFAIK "as far as i know", or FWIW "for what its worth".
which are probably the least known webreviations.

this could be big

umm... i think i found something out

whilst dropping off to sleep last night i was thinking of the apple hardware page layout (as you do) and i realised something

http://www.apple.com/hardware/

take a LOOONG look at the shape the images make... what letter does it look like? id say an N.

the numerical value of N is (go on! count), 14. 14th of Feb; valentines day. Steve Jobs spotlight example at the keynote; Love.

or maybe im looking way too deep into this? or could something most certainly be happening on valentines day after all

I think you're looking into it too much :) How on earth do you make an N out of that  Personally, I think thats a poorly designed page - it's all over the shop in my browser.

In an ideal world we'll have the G5 PB "sometime soon" [I hate that phrase!]...but then again in an ideal world I'd be rich, have a beautiful wife and there would be world peace...Two out of three aint bad! :D

I guess the PB updates "should" happen tomorrow, as the shipping estimates have decreased from 10 days last week to 4-5 days today.

Really just guessing though.

Let's just say that I'm glad you went to sleep when you did, as your mind was obviously playing tricks on you. :p How the heck do you make an "N" out of that mess?! Nice try, but in this case, no...

I'm just curious what you do with your laptop that you consider a 1.67 Ghz G4 to have "nonexistent performance." My gf's single processor 1.25 Ghz powermac G4 runs everything more or less as well as my 1.8 Ghz G5. Now, we're not rendering video, but unless that's what you're doing (or something equivalently demanding), I really think you're under estimating the G4. I'm sure there is some technical difference between how fast my G5 and her G4 perform operations, but from a regular user stand point, the difference is hardly noticable.

My Powerbook G4 is awesome for everyday tasks (surfin', iTunes, chat, and word processing), but I need a little more for my gaming self. My PB is horrendously slow when it comes to MOHAA or COD. If the 12" 1.5 gets a graphics card update, I may have to update as well.

An N?

lol. I dunno how you see an N... Look at the pic i've attached (link below); does what you see look like what i'm seeing? If so, how do you get an N out of that?

I know I was using IE the other day and the page loaded up and it was all screwed up. Is that the N you see?

But when you think about it, 14 Feb and Steve's overuse of `love' does make sense. You never know. But I don't want to have to wait until 14 Feb until I can upgrade to a PowerBook and throw this wintel craptop in the bin...

anyone else not interested in color screens? im just looking for an mp3 player i guess- it's not like it's really that important.. prolly a drain on the battery. i kind of like the monochrome simplicity
I remember saying those exact words while sour-grapedly justifying the purchase of my last monochrome Mac (after my SE was stolen in an apartment break-in), a Performa 200 back in 1993. "Why would I need a color screen?" Of course the main reason I bought it was that it was all I could afford at the time :(

It's amazing how used to the color iPod photo screen I have become. Now when I look at my old 3G (permanently docked in my wife's car) it looks absolutely horrid...monochrome, Chicago font, no album art, contrast and backlight all freaky and kind of blurry looking...I used to love that thing...

I highly suggest anyone who is happy with their monochrome iPod screen DO NOT touch, handle, or go anywhere near an iPod photo. The bright, crisp screen and beautiful color interface will have you soon parting with $599 and/or holding back vomit every time you look at your B&W screen. :p

(And yet paradoxically I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my screenless iPod shuffle...)

Yes and if I stare at white noise long enough I see messages from aliens. White noise's randomness picks up subspace signals which all advanced space faring races use. Oooo over there! They just said they loved the movie ET but that kid really was an idiot. Hmmm. Words to ponder. Words to ponder. ;)

Ideal 5G iPod: No ClickWheel with annoying scroll sounds and goodbye to the push-button in the centre and the moving of the wheel back and forth. If anything, the 4G iPod was a step backward from the 3G. Maybe they could use that sort of design and just have it be touch...no pushing.

No please... don't give them fresh ideas to delay more our dearly awaited updates....

I think a new term needs to be invented. Update is too generous a word for what Apple is going to provide in the short term. Even speedbump at this point doesn't work. Hmmm how about dearly awaited recycled garbage? No, not elegant enough.
Dearly awaited results of a squat from Apple? No, too long and too gross.
Dearly awaited crap. Too primitive a word. Doesn't really convey real meaning.
Don't know. Maybe they simply need to rename the device the iCrap.
;)

Is this a poll? Are we agreeing that you are just staring at the page way too much? I admit I have spent my fare share of time looking at that page to somehow, magically, be there when the image of a new PB shows up.

I'll continue Qcassidy352's arguement-

I am the one who sold him the G5 - and My 1ghz Powerbook ran as fast (or a little slower) then the G5 in normal usage. Given the Powerbook had twice as much ram. I dislike some peoples argument that "G5 or bust" When in fact a 1.6 G5 will *most likely* be at - or below performance levels of the 1.67 G4. (the only thing stopping the G4 would be the bus) Altivec would win. Simple as that. The battery life you were talking about Silliconaddict is decent - or higher then that of most Wintel books. So the Powerbook (besides the lack of usual updates) is doing fine with the G4, Just the name is what kills it.

Define NORMAL usage. Are you talking web browsing or how about running Virtual PC at a reasonable click?

http://www.barefeats.com/imacg5.html

Those results suggest that a good increase in speed can be had by moving to the G5 or more accurately a system with a faster FSB. Something the PowerBook would take more advantage of then anything having to do with the CPU itself. Simply the G5 has more breathing room for future enhances then the current G4 something the 1.67Ghz speedbump suggests. I’m not suggesting that the G4 isn’t a good CPU. It is. But the G4 in its current incarnation sure as hell isn’t setting the world on fire like the G5 in the PowerMac has. And extrapolating benchmarks from old data comparing the Pentium M to the latest round of speedbumps at the time shows that Apple is NOT keeping up with the industry. I’m happy that there are users out there that think the PowerBook suits their needs. But do not think in any way shape or form its keeping up with the competition. That IMHO is the heart of the matter. This simply goes back to the same argument that was discussed in the dark ages of the preG5 PowerMac: Bang for your buck. Software wise you are getting it. Hardware wise? Not a chance in heck.

Actually I'm waiting for the magic PowerBook fairy to show up.

*little giggle* “Why all you need to do is click your iShoe's heels together three times and say "There's nothing like performance. There's nothing like performance."

I would much rather see the dual core G4's than a G5 - much more power, much cooler and it will draw far less battery juice. But alas, we're all hung up on the G5 for that to happen.

Exactly right! I'd have stuck with my MDD dual 1.25 rather than a G5 SP. My lappies form the backbone of my VJ rig and the best upgrade I could hope for would be a move to dual core.

PB ETA

Hello,

A friend of mine works at an unnamed computer store. They're warehouse is sold out of the 15" SDR Powerbooks and have been given an ETA of February 4th, 2005.
Though this would be of some interest to you guys waiting around for the new powerbooks like me.

You lost me on the "N," dude, but you might be right about something coming February 14. Steve likes to drop hints into his keynote like mentioning Paris at the Keynote before the iMac debut in Paris.

I tried to find the N too but no luck. I do think the Love ties into Valentine's Day though. SJ used the word a little too much for it not to have some significance.

happy christmas! (or should i say valentines day)

but then why would apple give Win/IE users the chance to see this?

Is it tuesday yet? somewhere in the world?

And I know as soon as the announcement comes, it will be another couple weeks before fulfilment. Doh!!

I need a life. I also need a PB.
