Im now waiting until Tiger is out. in the UK with a student discount it costs £80 which isnt bad, but it will probably be out in less than 6 months. i can wait till then.

And they'd definately have a faster PB by then. i dont care if its G5 either.

Just a pity im stuck with my PC's until then *sobs*

Don't know whats wrong with your browsers... maybe the computers are anticipating the PB release just as much as we are.LOL

In 2006, yes, but not this year :)

That'd be awesome.

If Cell is as powerful as hyped, the x86 platform has its days numbered.

Imagine a world where PowerMacs are 10x more powerful than equivilant PC's... :)

Indeed. OS X is already superior (while Windows is also becoming more and more insecure compared to past versions of itself), if Apple does go the Cell way, it would be quite hard to justify the purchase of any x86/Windows or even x86/Linux PC.

I tried to find the N too but no luck. I do think the Love ties into Valentine's Day though. SJ used the word a little too much for it not to have some significance.

Could well be but the Paris event was for a brand new product, the iMac. Would all this hipe about Apple Store showing an N and Steve dropping Love be for just a small speed bump. No, can't be. Tommorow's the day. ;)

the white ipod is the icon for the company so i don't think that will change. I see more special editions ala U2 and HP versions.....more like collectors items. It will create a niche market again- that is where the ipod started.

Well, Apple already has the 20GB iPod U2 edition. But the iPod and even the iPod mini aren't such good ideas for collector items.

But now Apple has the iPod shuffle. These things are so low-priced that limited editions would sell like crazy.

Hear me Apple? Limited edition iPod shuffle versions!

And not just colored plastic either, make'em with stuff/images printed on them! I want a Dead or alive Volleyball iPod shuffle, Kasumi edition. :D

Haven't watched the whole keynote...but his references to love were during the Tiger demo...could he be referring to Tiger being released on Valentine's Day? Doesn't seem right for the PB

But it still doesn't look like an "N." If anything, it's a "U" -- the white boxes make a U shape. But of course, it's nothing at all. They were just trying to squeeze the products they wanted onto the page.

If there is a quiet update tomorrow (due to PAST experiences), WILL there be a wait or can we buy a new Powerbook TOMORROW???

I also just noticed that if you add the numerical values of the letters in APPLE together

A1 + P16 + P16 + L12 + E5 = 50

and divide by the number of letters in "Steven Jobs" (10)

50 / 10 = 5

Must be a secret message that can only have one meaning...
POWERBOOK G5 ON TUESDAY!

I want some of what raggedjimmi is smoking...N? :D

Thanks for clearing that up...I guess it's just wishful thinking

If I stare at the screen long enough, and let my eyes get crossed, actually, I see an "N" and an "O".

which means "NO" G5PB tomorrow. Get ready for your speed bump, and be happy with it.

Good vibes, right?

So if the PowerBook refreshes are coming this Tuesday or next, PowerBook G5 won't be likely be announced until WWDC in June at the earliest, what does that bring on Valentine's Day? Something iPod?

How about something Tiger-ish on February 14 -- like a ship date? Could Tiger be hitting the street on Valentine's Day?

shipping delays?

just to second that question. what kinda delay do apple usually have on product upgrades (assuming they have been cutting off supply of old pbs over last few weeks in preparation) ? is it worth me jumping the gun and ordering now & then phoning up tomorrow to tell them to change my order if they make an upgrade announcement?

ps this is my 1st post and (if i do ever get the pb) it will be my 1st apple! yey! :D

Based on past experiences... there will be a slight delay.

I would not order a current PB. It could be this week, next or the following. Who knows. But you will be pissed when you have your spanking brand new PB, and they upgrade (speedbump, hardware, memory & HD space) it before yours is even a couple weeks old.

My guess, is that you will be able to order the new PB on the site soon after it is announced. You won't be able to buy it in the stores until the following weekends (typical apple cycle).

Good luck man. Glad to see you are changing to the good side of computing.

Talk about hype.

I'll believe it when I see it, x86 is pretty damn fortified and as the Athlon 64 has shown, very strong too.

Everyone also forgets about how the Cell's strength is in parallelization... yet a lot of things gain nothing from this... plus it is extremely difficult.

I remember when The Emotion Engine came out....

All I want is that Dual Core G4 and all its lovely on chip memory controller goodness, and higher res screens, inside a widescreen 13" PB :)

but then why would apple give Win/IE users the chance to see this?

NO! OMG! It actually means Nintendo and Apple are teaming up on the next console! Rock!

Yeah, the article talks extensively about how the chip is designed with absolute speed in mind and in doing so requires your code to be specifically optimised to take advantage of the cell vector units and parallel features. This THEN leaves the full PowerPC core reasonably free to do whatever you want it to do.

I read that as OS X would require a huge upgrade to take advantage of the Cell system. Otherwise it would run like any other PowerPC chip, but with a better Altivec.

I also agree that the x86 is fortified - if IBM did want their chip to replace Intel's chip, it'd be a deal with Microsoft that makes the difference...

Blybug that's the funniest post i've read today... haha.

Joe, don't order the Powerbook today unless you are completely happy with the specifications of the current lineup. The frustrating risk of a speed-bump 1-2days after you receive your machine is just too great at the moment...

Personally I think we're about 2weeks and 1day from a bumped G4 Powerbook line (8th of Feb is the day).

I was ready to buy a Powerbook last week when I caught wind of the bump coming soon. If the update comes tomorrow what are the chances that I will have it before Sunday? I am leaving on business on Sunday and would really like ot have it for the trip.

Of course you will be able to buy one when it gets released. You just wont get it for a while :D

I really need a powerbook, my 17" 'slogic board died last wekk, need new powerbook now. I am stuck using a 867 15" Ti till the new one comes out

at this point, i'm most excited about the possibility of the ipod mini with 5gb drives. i've decided to sell my 30gb 3g ipod and get a mini to replace it, and i'd like as much capacity as i can get when i do it. i'm pretty resigned to waiting for a g5 powerbook for quite some time - my rev. a 12" g4 works just fine for what i need, so i can be patient for a while, and i feel i don't need to upgrade in the meantime...

I'm just curious what you do with your laptop that you consider a 1.67 Ghz G4 to have "nonexistent performance." .

Virtual PC. Unless you have a secret edition of MS Office for the Mac that comes with Access, its going to be a requirement on any Apple laptop I have. And please people. Don't tell me to just get a cheap PC laptop. I do NOT want to carry two systems with me where ever I go. Beyond that I have over a grand in software invested on the PC side of things. Too much to simply give it up cold turkey. That and some of it is unique to Windows. MS MapPoint does not have a counterpart on OS X nor does, as far as I know, Visio. I need VPC. Period. End of story. It doesn’t have to be lightening fast but sure as heck faster then the 1.25Ghz system I tried MapPoint on at an Apple store last year. The folks at the Apple store were REALLY cool in that they allowed me to install MP on a PowerBook. Those guys rock.
