T’hain means either buy an Apple display to make the problem go away, or use Better Display’s virtual screen capability to work around the issue. Details on how to do that are described elsewhere upstream in this thread.
Better Display virtual screen does not support more then 60hz tho

Couldn't tell yah, got an Ultra everything works great =)

My luck they will break the M3 and fix the M4.
So this issue does not exist on M3 ultra Mac Studio? What monitor do you have?

I'm on 15.5 (public beta updated yesterday) and its not fixed.

@davewolfs That’s really good to know.

The LG 40WP95C-W seems a bit like the successor to my 34” LG 34BK95U-W 5K2K (well, if you ignore the curved vs. non-curved bit and the size difference). Same resolution, Thunderbolt 4 vs. my Thunderbolt 3, etc.

But a key thing here is that yours is a 72Hz monitor (mine’s 60Hz) so it really looks like Apple stiffed everyone who doesn’t have a 120Hz or 240Hz on up monitor …

If anyone have a G9 57: Could u try please to put the monitor in PBP 21:9 and 11:9 (which should result in 5120 x 2160 resolution on one side) and see if 3840x1620 HIDPI is available on this side ?

I can confirm that on a G9 57 & a M4 Pro in PBP (21:9 and 11:9) I don't have access to 3840x1620 HiDPI despite the monitor having DSC & High Framerate (120hz), the issue is elsewhere then. I cannot explain why U4025QW is allowed to.

Mac support for external monitors drive me crazy.
On my old monitor: my base M4 mini was able to do 240hz but my macbook pro m4 pro only offer me 60 hz at the same resolution

My G9 57 have this issue too: 3360x1890 don't have 120hz support but other peoples claim it works for them.

I really hope they rewrite external monitor supports entirely at some point.

Another disappointed user of a recently received Mac Studio M4 Max here.

I have an LG UltraWide 40WP95CP-W and the maximum possible resolutions in Sequoia 15.4.1 are 5120x2160 (too small) and 3360x1418 (too big). I have tried to connect the display by Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt to DisplayPort and HDMI without being able to get an ideal resolution.

I come from a 2017 Intel iMac that moved this display perfectly with BetterDisplay getting a completely sharpness image in many resolutions without any problem and now with the new Mac Studio M4 Max it is impossible to have a correct resolution without everything look blurred.

INCREDIBLE!

Actually betterdisplay can show 3840x1620 hidpi with this monitor and an M4. But only with betterdisplay (Apple really should have paid the developer of betterdisplay millions for plugging this huge hole).

Following up after the latest Sequoia update hoping the issue would be resolved on my M4 Max MBP.

I have a LG 38UC99-UW 38" with a native resolution of 3840 x 1600 and it operates just fine at 75hz.

I also have a LG 40WP95C-W 40” that has a native resolution of 5120 x 2160, and it operated just fine on my M1 Max MBP at 3840 x 1620. The max "acceptable" resolution now is 3360x1418 on the M4 Max MBP.

Please, can you explain me how I should do that? Maybe I am doing something wrong but I have tried everything, even with different cables and configurations.

I installed BetterDisplay since the first moment but although it enables more resolutions, it seems that only 3360x1418 is HiDPI.

Are you sure this resolution works with the LG 40WP95CP-W monitor? I have read that some users can use that resolution but with a DELL monitor, not the LG.

My monitor is an LG 40WP95X-W (basically the same monitor).

To achieve the resolution of 3840x1620 hidpi 72hz (7680x3240) you have to create a virtual monitor with BetterDisplay then configure it to mirror.

OK I was able to setup the virtual display. It took quite a bit of fiddling as there are not any instructions to get this to work quickly.

At first the refresh rate looked like garbage. After a few more tweaks I was able to get it to look normal, but now the color profile is not quite the same as the non-virtual screen approach, despite using the same color profile. It actually looks like the system setting are saying its 8-bit, when the panel is 10-bit, so it looks like its forced into an 8-bit setup and the color is different. Anyone have any tips on if this is configurable within BetterDisplay?

OK I was able to get my setup almost close to perfect on the color side and refresh rate. This works seamlessly so far on my 40WP95C-W.

Here are my settings if this helps anyone else.

@sboerup The developer of BetterDisplay often posts here in the MR Forums; hoping he will see your post.

As for the suggestion by @Wolf1701, I think there have been enough oddities with doing Virtual Display mirroring (I recall mouse dragging issues, and perceived performance hits) in BetterDisplay that it is hardly ideal compared to Apple actually fixing the damn problem.

Oh don't get me wrong: I agree 100% but mouse dragging issue are fixed now. I was only trying to support him, still hating Apple for this ;)

Thank you!

I followed your indications and I have been able to configure my LG display with BetterDisplay and its Virtual Display mirroring function.

I understand that this is not the ideal solution, but for now it seems that it works decently.

What are the downsides of using this Virtual Display mirroring?

As far as I'm concerned, it's some “uncertainty” when the monitor goes into standby--nothing too serious. The most serious problems (mouse lag) have been solved. There will definitely be some small performance loss but nothing that I have noticed in daily use.

Thank you for the instruction very useful! I knew about issue but decided to go with m4 Mac mini anyway. Can confirm that m4 mini (24/512) doesn't have 3820x1620 with Dell u4021qw. Better Display helps to get it via Virtual Display
