Mine is off but not quite as much. Image

Thanks for that. You've got the best one of all of us, thus far.

True but at least they are off on the same side of the phone. I wonder if the circuit boards are all crooked? I can't imagine them being off that much. I think android phones have a system wide calibration for the gyro/ accelerometer. If this does affect many phones it would be cheaper for Apple to add this as an option but I would not hold my breath

----------

try rotating it slowly around 360 degrees on the desk and see if it changes and report the worst case number. I get anywhere from -1 to -4

You can't rotate it on the desk (well, you can a small portion). In any case, my phone is stubbornly reading -6 degrees, and believe you me that absolutely stinks in any game that requires tilt for steering.

Maybe not such a wide spread issue? Unless I'm not understanding correctly.

I'll feel more comfortable once I can go to the apple store and test this out on many phones. So annoying having to sit around and wait on fedex.

If this turns out to be a widespread issue, is this something Apple can easily fix with an iOS update?

All I did was go into compass and swipe to the level I have no idea how to calibrate.

Yeah. I mean even if they can't change the low-level calibration they could add a calibrate function and store it somewhere in the userspace.

Errrmmm, how do you all know that the surface you are testing on is 100% level?

Plus, your cases can affect the result (as in they are not level).

As stated earlier (at least by me), both my old iPhone 5 devices read 0 on the same flat surface.

Thank you. Well, if even ONE device is reading 0, it means our devices are probably needing to be exchanged. :(

FYI, to calibrate, you can touch the screen to the right of the number. Don't worry, it won't mess up your phone. If you quit the app (properly quit it), it will reset to default when you load it up.

I'm not sure if the wood part is level never bothered to check before just saw forum and tested it out to see if I was also in the negatives

I don't have a case. Running naked on the device except a zagg front

I wonder if this has something to do with the m7 chip?

Btw I don't see apple releasing a user calibration option unless this affect most or all 5S's. When they hear of this issue they will prob make some changes in the factory and just replace units for people that want to.

Ah then I wouldn't want to mess with that if it's fine now.

Same after a reboot

Okay - anyone have any idea what is up with the following?

I consistently get a reading of -1 or -2 on any flat surface. But if I tap the screen (without moving the phone), the reading will turn red and read "zero", then turn green (still reading zero) and stay that way (as if the surface is perfectly level). What function is the tap activating? Is it a calibration feature?

M

(edit - and just as I post, my question appears to be answered by the post immediately above mine.)

I doubt this is a problem with the phone itself, how is there room for any error when the screw holes for the logic board are right there on the aluminum enclosure? And I can guarantee you that the workers who made the phone must have tightened the screws all the way.

Maybe its just an iOS 7 issue, apple rushed this update that isn't even completely done yet, There isn't much of a difference in the speed between the 5 and 5s because apple hasn't optimized the operating system. Wait till 7.1 and I bet that the issue will be solved....

I'm just brainstorming here, as I don't yet have my 5s to test... If it changes when you rotate it, wouldn't that mean the table or whatever surface is not level? Or perhaps both the table and phone are a little off and the errors add together at the worst point and subtract from each in the opposite direction?
My dad (lifelong carpenter) always taught me to properly test a level at the store, check for level, turn it 180 and test again, because that will show if its the level that's off or the surface you're testing. If both times the right side is exactly 1/4" low then the surface is off and the level is accurate, even though it looks off.

I'm not saying there isn't an issue, just tossing this out there as a way to verify how much exactly it is off.
Obviously if it were only the table you'd go from 4 degrees to -4 degrees as it rotated.

For reference, my iPhone 5 and wife's iPhone 5 read 0 degrees on this flat surface. The accelerometer has really been bothering me playing Asphalt 5…

The odds of that surface being level aren't that great. Why makes you so sure that your wife's phone was correct? Maybe her phone is off and these two are within +\- 1 degree.

I think this is a problem with the individual phones themselves. I'm not sure how the accelerometer chip is on the circuit board, but if the chip is very, very slightly off level, that would explain the readings we see. It doesn't need to be off much, to read -4 to -6 degrees off. My brother over in the UK just picked up two 16GB space grey iPhone 5s units, so I'm going to have him check his later tonight.

I also need to go to the Apple Store to pick up another 5s for my family plan anyway, so I'll check out some store units when I'm there.

It's hard to know exactly what others are doing or if their surface is level or they hit the screen to calibrate to 0 and don't realize it etc. I will be satisfied once I hit the Apple store and test 10 phones. If many of them are off and a few are perfect I'm going to wait awhile to exchange it and let Apple sort it out first rather then cherry pick a perfect 0 that has some other issue and then swap again to get one that's off again. I may open the one that comes today and see if its better. If it's not ill have to explain to att why I opened it etc.
