Happened by the Apple store this afternoon and tried 3 different 5s models. First was -4°, second was -6°, and the third was -1°.

Has anyone contact Apple about this so they can start working on a fix?

I have. Supposed to get a call back in the coming days. Senior advisor has forwarded all of this to engineering.

As an update, I went to the Apple store in Bellevue, WA. Not a single 5s would read 0 degrees on a flat table. All the 5c devices I tested read -1, which is within tolerance. I had one of the Apple guys test his iPhone 5 and it read 0 degrees. We tested about 15 iPhones total. Pictures to come when I get home. All 5s units read -3 to -4, except for a single -2.

I'm still going to try and get to the store today. I wonder how they will fix this one?

To mention in general devices that use this type of system are calibrated post production individually. In this case maybe they weren't and it a generic calibration and something isn't identical to the original. In any case simple user calibration feature added to the software can fix the problem.

Like mentioned, if you set it on a flat surface and spin it 360 degrees and the error renamed static to the screen it's the device. If the error is spinning on the screen pointing the same direction it's not a level surface.

However if it's that noticeable in games it's the device.

I noticed it too on my iPhone 5s while checking the compass app. My gyroscope is off by 1-2° depending on how it is oriented.

Here's a picture of 3 iPhone 5s units at the Apple Store, Bellevue WA. You can see they're all off. The iPhone 5 unit belongs to the Apple employee Nick, who generously let me use his iPhone 5 in this experiment. I had to dangle them somewhat off the edge of the desk since the theft-prevention connection was on the back of the unit.

In any case, every single iPhone 5s was "faulty."

:(

And here's a picture of the 5c. All of them were reading -1 degree, which is with tolerances.

I also tested a few 4s devices, and they were all at 0 degrees.

I'm pretty convinced this is a very widespread issue, sadly. :(

The problem is they are not consistent. On the first 5S I could raise the side with the home button about a quarter of an inch or more and it would go to 0. This one is the opposite as I have to lift the top of the phone a bit to get it to 0. Both phones were on the same table/orientation.

I think the most important thing is how it behaves on the sides as that is real world use. My replacement is fine 0 in that regards. Im afraid if this is software Apple will not be able to patch it since they are behaving differently. They would have to add a calibration option to the menu or have special software in the Genius bars for them to do it. It would be to costly to replace all the hardware. I have a feeling they will make some changes in the factory and just swap out units people complain about. I would prob hold off for now until this is more clear.

Yeah I wouldn't be bothered if it were 1 or 2 degrees off. 6, though… :(

Unfortunately, my 5s reads -5 on both its back and side (both sides)....my 5C and 4S are at -0.

Ouch. Still, nobody beats -6, yet! :D :D

*sigh*…

Not sure if I should be bothered to exchange my 5s. Only one person thus far has been at 0 degrees, as far as I've seen. The rest are in the -3 to -6 (for the most part).

My 5s is -1 and one out three I checked at Apple Store was also -1.

What were the other 2?

Maybe this issue will make the front page since its pretty wide spread and it will definitely get Apples attention.

Mine is at -7, and is really obvious when playing games :(

actually it's -8 without the case on

I have the same problem.
Flat = -5
Side = -3

The weird thing is if I put my phone upright on its end it reads 0. If the calibration was off wouldn't I see it in that orientation too?
