And that's what we're trying to say: it's permanently tethered. I guess for some people that's fine. I think two of them would be great on our deck in the summer -- except there are no electrical outlets out there. Even moving the minis from room to room requires first fishing for the cord and then plugging it back in somewhere else. If it had a battery (and I have two other wireless speakers about the size of the minis that do -- and that last up to 30 hours), then I could just carry it to wherever I needed it. But I guess if the mini is aimed to be part of a smart home system (rather than just a Bluetooth speaker) then it sort of makes sense that it would need to be continually plugged in.
So you want a Bluetooth speaker then? These do exist you know lol

Also you can always plug it into a power bank if you really wanted to do that

i never speak to my home. switched mics and siri off on day one.
i am happy with my homepod og and my homepods mini. and my girlfriend love them - this is the best part - because they look good, sound well and are easy to control with an iphone.

Still centered around siri functionality.....oh, ok
Just turn it off, I did. Why would I want to talk to my speaker? The few times I do, I touch the top of the HomePod mini and ask what the temperature is in that specific room (kitchen, bedroom, etc…). If I want to have a meaningful conversation I talk to my spouse, a friend, or a therapist. If I’m searching for information I use DuckDuckGo or ChatGPT. Perhaps I’m just old fashioned, but chatting with hardware in my home & expecting meaningful answers seems like something a crazy person would do. Although I do hear that Amazon’s speakers will remind you to order more laundry or dishwasher detergent & order that for you, if you’re into being listened to all the time LOL. 😉

Still no plans to use these as surrounds for a couple of full size HomePods?

Such an odd functionality omission to me.
HomePod Mini sound has sucked to date, so it would be inappropriate to try to put that sucky sound into a surround-sound system that included the excellent sounding full size HomePods.

First make HomePod Minis with good sound, then put that sound into a surround-sound system.

What would be the usefulness of a removable cable? I'm puzzled, as I have 2 HomePods and don't really see a use for removing the cable.
So I can put a shorter, non-fabric cable on it. Mine is right next to a power plug on my counter in the kitchen, and I have to awkwardly roll it up and try to keep spaghetti sauce from splattering on it.

Hard to believe that they’ve been around five years already. I wish they weren’t permanently attached to that power cable.
Good news, they are not.

Off topic a bit maybe, but several have chimed in to dunk on Siri. I’m not going to defend Siri, its reputation speaks for itself. However, my HP minis/HomePod OG do fine with commands to turn on/turn off/dim the lights. Would be nice if it understood context, but thats not where it’s at so I have to specify the room I want turned on. I only have one room of lights it can turn on, the other option is the porch which is on an automation for sunset/sunrise, so clearly it’s not learning.

in all honesty - who’s gonna ever buy a new one of these unless it has LLM Siri available??

Maybe if they were more portable you wouldn't need seven of them.
You're suggesting people carry them from room to room as they move around the house? I think you may have misunderstood the target of homepods completely..

A low power watch chip again? There's no reason for a power-efficient chip in a product that runs on mains power with no battery. Except, of course, so they can make it obsolete in a few short years - when they release one with a proper chip that is compatible with AI. I would just wait. You can get a more functional bluetooth speaker for now.

This is like saying iPods and iPhones were a separate market. They are the same market. The Venn diagram is a circle.

You can use a portable speaker in a stationary, permanent location, plugged in, and have "7 devices around the house", if you so wish. But you can also move one around if you so wish. It's really quite up to you.

I would not jump on that wagon again. My current one
- who is speaking… I can not do that … Like what, the temperature in the back yard is the top secret that need voice rec?
- You will need to unlock you phone…. WTF!!! If I had my phone I would not need the the speaker…..

bottom line, incomes an Echo, out goes the home pod.

I think you misunderstood me. I do think it is a different market segment, but more importantly so does the ecosystem.

The whole design of how they integrate into the homekit/airplay with atvs/pairing them in stereo/etc systems assumes they’re stationary.

It’s an assumption baked into the whole product as part of the architecture. The system literally isnt built with such devices being mobile in mind.

Making them have a battery would require a ground up redesign of Apple’s home systems for better or worse to keep the easy integration people expect from the ecosystem, not just a tweak to the product itself. They are currently targeted as fixed points in your smart home infrastructure, that would need to change across the entire stack and architecture to accommodate what you want. If you’re thinking of them as a glorified bluetooth speaker you’ve missed what Apple is targeting them as.

Only thing I have wished for is generic bluetooth pairing, or even an aux port. There is no way for non-Apple devices to connect.

I'm on iPhone. Wife uses Pixel.
Obviously you need a new wife. Consider the new Wife series 2 with the A13 Bionic processor and your choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage. Compatible with HomePod Mini and HomeKit.
