Newer chip is a given. Also expecting to see improvements to sound quality. As for the color, I would like see some new bright colors but Apple will most likely go with some pale colored options. Don't know when it will be released.

Does anyone use expensive hifi equipment anymore? Amps, preamps, high end loudspeakers? I think there is a place for this HomePods, I have 2 of them, but they are no substitute for a real hifi system. Just like the camera on an iPhone is no substitute for a high end dedicated camera.

USB-C charging/power
Better mics, better bass, better WiFi range, Add UWB chip to enable find my network scanning and locating things

Obviously you need a new wife. Consider the new Wife series 2 with the A13 Bionic processor and your choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage. Compatible with HomePod Mini and HomeKit.
You don't need a new bionic spouse. The old one will eventually start moving slow and with sound effects, too.

the HomePod is only useful if all the stars align - aka your whole home has both Apple Music and all apple phones... otherwise it's a paperweight...

many homes, especially outside the US don't have this - so for me Sonos still a much better option

I have seven HomePods. Not once have I cared or thought about the power cable being attached.

Ditto with my table and floor lamps, clock radio, TV, toaster, coffee maker, etc.

But, who uses their toaster in the bathroom? It would be nice to be able to leave cords in place and easily move a HomePod mini around once in a while.

I am happy with my HomePods and HomePod minis. I just wish I could use the minis and surround sound speakers and Apple makes a subwoofer. As all tv+ movies and shows have surround sound, this is a slam dunk to get more people buying its speakers and keeping people in the ecosystem.
The sound quality would be sub par, but for basic setups, it would be a great update.

The HomePod Atmos sound needs more separation (so a stereo pair is a must) and a surround pair, with maybe an option to add even more homepods for a 7.0, or 9.0 setup is what I expect from Apple.

Just turn it off, I did. Why would I want to talk to my speaker? The few times I do, I touch the top of the HomePod mini and ask what the temperature is in that specific room (kitchen, bedroom, etc…). If I want to have a meaningful conversation I talk to my spouse, a friend, or a therapist. If I’m searching for information I use DuckDuckGo or ChatGPT. Perhaps I’m just old fashioned, but chatting with hardware in my home & expecting meaningful answers seems like something a crazy person would do. Although I do hear that Amazon’s speakers will remind you to order more laundry or dishwasher detergent & order that for you, if you’re into being listened to all the time LOL. 😉
I think you completely miss the point in a smart speaker…

I have 8 and need 6 more. Once you hear seamless music from room to room, you’ll never want to go back.
I totally get this - that sounds great and it's great that you can use them in this way. But that's still not a reason to make it portable and battery-powered.

Erm…no, you plug it back in?
Obviously. But coming in here saying "um actually they DO have a removable cord" is complete pointless. Who gives a sh*t about a removable cord if it renders the device useless?

It's very unlikely that I'd upgrade. I have two regular homepods in my bedroom paired up and working flawlessly with my apple TV. I also have a mini in each of the remaining rooms and they too are working flawlessly with their own apple TV. For the purpose of my usage, the new features are not attractive enough to ditch several hundred dollars investment in tech. But I might get the next upgrade if Apple Home comes with significant improvements.

Simply unplug it and then plug it back in your bathroom.

Or better yet, purchase a competitor speaker product that meets your requirements.

Sure, why don’t you buy it for me? :)

Sure, why don’t you move my entertainment center and unplug the HomePod mini that I might want to move but it’s a pain in the butt to unplug?

:)

I have exactly zero, only because they are required to be wired. Bought a JBL speaker instead that can last over 24 hours on its battery, and function as a phone charger. I am surprised apple doesn’t offer a wireless version.

Precisely.

Just like it’s not your responsibility or place to tell others how to appreciate or use a device lol.

I'm not telling you anything. Rather, offering you suggestions for solving your very difficult issue. It's up to you to take responsibility for solving your problem. Not me. Or Apple.

Who's expecting reasonable conversation? I just want to be able to tell it to add Food Item X to my grocery list when I run out of it while cooking, or change the music while I'm on the treadmill.

It could be that the HomePod is basically always on. It's listening for "Hey Siri". So you may be charging it very often if it were cordless.
I bought my wife a cordless bluetooth speaker about 10 years ago. I think she used it one time, I'm sure by now the battery in it won't hold a charge as it hasn't been used so long.

I do those things easily with my Apple Watch, which you may not have… 🤷
