Sorry if this has been asked, but I just bought a 2011 version Macbook Pro 15", will putting 8GB of RAM work for this model?

Thank you for the help.

upgrading my older Mac Book Pro. any suggestions?

Hi all,
I am new to online forums and could use some help.
I currently have a Macbook Pro ''17. It is older, the model is : A1151.
I think its a 1st Generation.
It runs on a 2.16 GHz Intel core duo Processor.
It is running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.
I am at 2 GB of ram.
It currently has (two) DDR2 SDRAM 1 GB ram sticks in it.

I would like to upgrade my system as much as possible but the apple guys on the phone wouldn't help me .

I use my computer for Photo Editing ( Adobe lightroom 3 , and CS3 but i want to upgrade to photoshop CS5.)
-lightroom 3 runs pretty slow on 2 gb of memory :(

I also want to do audio and video editing but i am afraid my current system can't handle it.

I would love to have 4-6 GB of memory ( 8 if possible ) but the apple guys said i couldn't go above 2.
Is it possible and if so, what is the best way to go about it ?

Would upgrading to a Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz logic board help at all?
Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

Any advice is greatly appreciated ,

Thank you,:)

Early 2011 MBPs

Looks like the early/Feb 2011 MacBookPro8,1-8,3 (13"-17") will run 16GB (8GBx2) of PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz.

However, it's an outlay of about US$700-$800 per stick.

Anyone get a good price on this?

yes you can

Maybe not. I have a MBP 4,1 and despite what the good folks at OWC say it will not take 8 gb, even though I have the appropriate firmware update. 8 gb causes problems, while 6 gb works just fine.

interesting because i remember when this thread started and Ayeying and me and i think you as well confirmed that it did. i dunno maybe im not remembering it right. maybe we only confirmed 6GB like you say but i put 8 in my old MBP (a mid 2008) and it worked but this member has an early 2008.

id say try it and if it doesnt work return the RAM

Thanks for the advice, what are the specs the 4gb and the 2 gb module should be? could it be any ddr3 or it has to be ddr2 @ 667 mhz?

=)

i did a search and couldnt find an answer.. and kinda dont have the time at the moment to search through every single thread..

i currently have 4gb (2x2gb) crucial or kingston... sticks in my early 2008 mbp.

if i get the gSkill 4gb stick listed by the OP, will i have any instability problems?

ya caveman, i checked front and saw that it is 100% capable of using 6gb :D

but i was wondering if anyone would know if if i mix-match the ram.. if i would run into any problems?

i forgot what kind of ram i currently have, the mbp is at home so i cant take it out to see.. its either crucial or kingston.. 2x2gb.

just wanted to see if i use 1x2gb (crucial or kingston) and 1x4gb gSkill, if there would be any kind of probs

thanks in advance

i have the same question as neenja in the above post. does mixing the brands of ram matter when going to 6gb of ram? thanks in advance!

Have a read here for some background info. Sometimes a RAM chip will "slow down" if it's matched with a slower chip, but more often than not they don't. That's why it's usually a good idea to buy identical chips for your system. But if you can ensure the timings are the same they'll probably work fine. If you can't boot, get a memory error, incorrect RAM size reported or kernel panics it's likely your RAM is the source of the problem.

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 2,5GHz (early 2008),
model identifier MacBookPro4,1
model number A1260.
(as a rule of thumb, it is NOT an unibody, it is the last MBP prior to the unibody introduction).
I currently have 2Gb of RAM installed in a 1+1Gb configuration.

I would like to upgrade to at least 4Gb, but I am a bit confused wether my MBP may support up to 8gb of RAM.
has anyone tried (and succeeded) to do so?

If not what are my upgrade options?
