Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 2,5GHz (early 2008),
model identifier MacBookPro4,1
model number A1260.
(as a rule of thumb, it is NOT an unibody, it is the last MBP prior to the unibody introduction).
I currently have 2Gb of RAM installed in a 1+1Gb configuration.

I would like to upgrade to at least 4Gb, but I am a bit confused wether my MBP may support up to 8gb of RAM.
has anyone tried (and succeeded) to do so?

If not what are my upgrade options?

Your machine can go to 6GB reliably.

I have the 17 inch 2.6Ghz version of your machine and it has been running 6GB RAM for years.

You need one 4GB stick and a 2GB stick. Both 667Mhz SO-DIMM.

So, my MBP is a Apple MacBook Pro 2.2GHz (15-inch Intel Core 2 Duo) - Mid 2007.

I gather that I can upgrade to 6GB correct? What i need to know is whether i roll with DDR2 or 3? It has DDR2 in it now, so i assume that is all.

I am going to upgrade to 8gb on my MBP.

1) Where is the best retailer to buy from?

edit: just bought from OWC. Great price on memory and shipping.

Have a read here for some background info. Sometimes a RAM chip will "slow down" if it's matched with a slower chip, but more often than not they don't. That's why it's usually a good idea to buy identical chips for your system. But if you can ensure the timings are the same they'll probably work fine. If you can't boot, get a memory error, incorrect RAM size reported or kernel panics it's likely your RAM is the source of the problem.

cool. is there any way possible (software wise) to find the timing of the current ram installed on my mbp?

I figured out that I have Crucial 2x2gb installed currently. I'm gonna just purchased the 4gb crucial stick from newegg, $99 + free shipping. Better than paying $130+ for 6gb of gskill.

Will report back as soon as it comes in and I run some tests :)

Hi guys

I have a mid-2007 15" MacBook Pro which according to the specs I think it should support 6Gb (2+4).

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2,2 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.16f11

I got myself these from Crucial:

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT25664AC667
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT51264AC667

Problem is the 2Gb module works either alone or with one of the factory 1Gb modules for a total of 3Gb, but the 4Gb one doesn't: the moment I plug it, either alone or with the 2 or 1Gb modules, the laptop doesn't boot and the front led blinks three times. I googled for that code and that seems to be a memory issue (POST Ok but can't be used by the OS):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341

So, what do you think? Faulty chip? Did I got the wrong one for my Mac? Looking at the specs I think it's the correct one, same details as the 2Gb module. Anyone has the same Crucial modules with a macbookpro3,1?

I don't have another laptop to test the 4Gb module, so I'd like to know the most probable cause (faulty chip or incompatibility) before emailing Crucial and asking for either a 4Gb replacement or a 2Gb module instead of the 4Gb one.

Thanks

UPDATE AUGUST 17th: I can confirm that these RAM modules DO work in a mid-2007 MacBookPro3,1 with the specs above. I opened an RMA with Crucial and got a new module just yesterday. Now I have 6Gb.

Thanks nick for this template haha.

Hello,

I have a Macbook 13" 2,4GHz (mid-2010),
model identifier MacBook 1,7
I currently have 2Gb of RAM installed in a 1+1Gb configuration.

I would like to upgrade to at least 4Gb, but I am a bit confused wether my MBP may support up to 6gb/8gb of RAM.

What are my upgrade options?

Quick question for you guys:

I am looking to update my system (Late 2008 15" MBP) to 8GB. I have also researched around and know what memory I would like to get.

The issue I am having is I just installed Lion the other night and am trying to do a EFI update in order to be able to run the 8GB, however I am getting an error saying the EFI is not supported.

What am I doing wrong here? It says the EFI update (2.1 and 1.9 I tried) just needs to be running OSX 10.6.x and higher.

Thanks ahead of time.

Doesn't RAM run fastest when used in pairs???

Modern laptop chipsets do asymmetric dual channel, which means in a 6GB 4+2 setup, the first 4GB will be dual channel, then the last 2GB will be single channel. But if you are running out of memory (look at page-outs in activity monitor, if it's anything more than a few hundred MB then you need more RAM), even single channel RAM is many times faster than paging out to the hard drive. This has been discussed before, probably in this thread.

Software updater knows what your system needs. This update was one that should have been applied to your system automatically quite a while ago. If it doesn't want to let you update EFI it's highly likely because you already have the latest EFI.

I can't imagine that your system wouldn't have it unless you basically never apply software updates.

MBP 4,1 upgrade to 6 or 8gb mem

Hi all
I have read through the forum and I am still not sure if I can get 8gb memory working in the machine stated below.
I struggle with the 4gb lately due to the VM(XP Pro) which I work on everyday.
Has anyone installed the 8gb or is it deffinitely a no no? And what brand should I buy?

Thanks a lot:)

Model Name: MacBook Pro, OS Leopard
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1

Hi,

has anyone test MacBook Pro 4.1 (early 2008) with 8GB in 10.7 LION ??? i wanna know if the previous mentioned "slowdowns" are only with SL or LEOPARD...

I have only 4GB ram and want to buy more :D i know that 6GB will works but 8GB will be better...

Just upgraded my MBP 4.1 from 4 GB 2x2 GB Crusial to 6 GB 1x2 + 1x4 GB Crusial and it makes all the difference. No more slowdowns from Safari 5.1 (that memoryhogging pig...)

i believe the OP stated that the mbp 4.1 (early 2008) can only take a max of 6gb ram.

i dont think anyone has been able to run 8gb and have it stable

How did it go?

I was thinking of ordering memory from Crucial until I saw your post. Your Macbook Pro spec is exactly the same as mine. I am currently running 4 GB but I am thinking of whether to upgrade it or not.

It works, the problem was a faulty RAM module. In fact after opening an RMA with Crucial and returning it got it back just yesterday. :D

Like Redfanix, I'm wondering about 10.7 LION. I'm also wondering if RAM hardware technology advances in the 3 years since this thread started mean 8GB can work.

RAM can now be made with higher- density semiconductor manufacturing processes and that implies more efficient parts that produce less heat per GB stored are possible.

I think folks don't know what made 8GB not work, but heat is a leading suspect, though it could well be the firmware or OS. Given that the OS has changed, and better RAM is probably available now, 3 years later, I think it's worth trying 8GB again in systems where it didn't work. If I get encouraging info on heat and newer DDR2 RAM densities, I'm probably going to try it. I do suspect my system fan is not working very well, so I need to look into that...anyone have or seen typical MBP temperatures? I have XRG installed. My MBP's rather idle temps: (It is sitting in a comfortable room on a marble slab desk.)

I asked about this here as well, in a somewhat similar post:

Like Redfanix, I have a MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008).

P.S. Thanks for updating your post, and replying, Bisente
