where to buy?

I figured I'd upgrade my late 2008 15" MBP 2.5ghz C2D to 6GB, since it appears that will work, but I can't seem to actually FIND a 4GB 667 DDR2 chip in a single module to make it work? any tips on where to find one?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who commented in this thread.

Picked up my 8GB from Newegg.com this morning and should have it by the end of the week. I needed more RAM, seems Lion runs a little sluggish with only 2GB so I am beefing that up.

Again thanks.

First off thanks to everyone who has posted advice and results in this thread, it has been immeasurably helpful!

I finally upgraded my Late 2008 Unibody 2.4 Ghz MBP from 6 GB to 8 GB this past week. It was a little finicky in the beginning with it only detecting one of the two 4 GB SODIMMs but after I tried reseating the memory a few times everything seemed to clear up.

Inexperienced installers often don't push the RAM in (pinwards) firmly enough to get it to seat properly.

No more comments on my post?

Upgrade To 6GB Works For Me * It's Great!

Like others earlier, I would like to say a big thank you to all of you who investigated this upgrade problem and its been a tremendous help to me and my final upgrade decision.

I have a Macbook Pro 5.1 (Late 2008 Unibody) 2.8Ghz and last week upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 6GB, which I purchased for £35 from Global Memory here in the UK (www.globalmemory.co.uk).

It has more than met my expectations, everything is much snappier and almost instantaneous, even when opening Photoshop files. Although I do tend to close everything I don’t need when working in PS.

It would be better if I could use 8GB, but nobody seems to be reporting a fully successful install and use. It looks like you can install it, but once you go past 4GB, it crashes etc, whilst 6GB (4+2) runs just fine.

So any one with my model ~ Macbook Pro 5.1 (Late 2008 Unibody) 2.8Ghz, I would say go for 6GB.

Respectfully, this is completely incorrect advice. You can install 8GB in this machine assuming the EFI is up-to-date. Apple resolved the issue that was limiting it to 6GB.

What about lion and MacBookPro4,1 + 2.6Ghz?

Like Redfanix, I'm wondering about 10.7 LION. I'm also wondering if RAM hardware technology advances in the 3 years since this thread started mean 8GB can work.

<...>
Like Redfanix, I have a MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008).

I'm also wondering about this. I've an early 2008 15" Macbook Pro, that was a BTO.

Code:
  Model Name:	MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:	MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name:	Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:	2.6 GHz
  Number of Processors:	1
  Total Number of Cores:	2
  L2 Cache:	6 MB
  Memory:	4 GB
  Bus Speed:	800 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:	MBP41.00C1.B03
  SMC Version (system):	1.27f3

Has anyone tried 8Gb with one of these?

Secondary question is what brand of RAM these days are recommended?

Thanks.

I have just installed 8 GB in a Macbook Pro 5.1 (15" 2.66 Core2Duo Late 2008 MC026LL/A) and no problem so far.
What should I do to test all my memory and see if there is no crash beyond 4 GB ?

There's nothing to test. Your MBP can take 8 gb of RAM without problems.

That's true at one level, however various firmware updates have appeared along the way.

It's true at every level. It's not an OS issue.

I've just ordered a 4GB chip to bump my MBP 4,1 (Early 2008) to 6GB.

But at a whopping £60 per chip, i'm not sure i'd risk ordering 2 just yet.....

macbook pro mc026, big difference with 8GB of memory?

Hi, I own a macbook pro mc026, I wanted to know if there is big difference with 8GB of memory.

thanks

6gb or 8gb clarification...

This is an extremely informative thread, thank you!

Before I make the investment I wanted to ask for some clarification to know what my MBP will support:

My Macbook Pro is 17-inch, Mid/Late-2007 (week 31) Running LION
Model ID: - MacBookPro 3,1
Order Nr.: - (MA897LL/A)
Processor speed: - 2.4 GHz
Processor Type: - Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom)
Number of Cores: - 2
Bus Speed: - 800 MHz
Cache: - 4 MB L2 cache
64-bit Support: - Yes
MEMORY
Max. Amount: - 4.0 GB
Amount of Slots: - 2
RAM Speed: - 667 MHz
RAM Type: - PC2-5300, DDR2, SO-DIMM

The beginning of the thread stated that the MBP 3,1 would support 8gb, but I just want to be sure.

Does it matter if the hard drive and graphics card have been upgraded and my OS is Lion?

Also, regardless of whether or not my machine can handle 6 or 8 gb of RAM, is there anything I need to do prior to installing the RAM to ensure that it will recognize it or whatnot?

Finally- I usually go with Crucial, but see that G.SKill is mentioned from newegg as well. Any other memory makers worth checking out?

I really appreciate any input! Pardon me for the numerous questions.

Excellent, thanks! Wish I could bump up to 8gb, but I upgraded to 6gb I can definitely tell a difference when using Adobe Lightroom!

Thanks again for this informative thread!

( I'll also spread the word that Amazon has been having really good prices on Crucial PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM ram lately, between $60-$74 for 4gb with free shipping. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RB21JY/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details )

4+2 ram installation question

Thank you in advance for the help - I have an early 2008 MBP 4,1 that came with 4 gb of ram (2+2). I've ordered a 4 gb stick from crucial. Does it matter which ram connector I use for the new 4 gb stick?

I have a MB466LL/A MacBook5,1 running, lion 10.7. Crucial memory scanner still reports that 4gb is the maximum memory my Macbook can support.

Is this the case? Or as people suggest should i install a single 4gb module upping my memory to 6gb (4+2).

Or is it completely stable to choose 2x4gb and get 8gb total?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

They report what the manufacturer says it could handle, thus the 4 GB max.

It seems that this whole thread revolves around a firmware update that allows an unofficially supported increase in the amount of RAM these machines can take. is this not the case?
