I'm fine with the resolution. I'd be fine with 1080p (I see a very slight difference on the 6 Plus vs. the 6, but only when viewed side by side and examining closely...in real use, it's irrelevant). The improvement is so minimal, in that it just doesn't make a difference in usage (while the difference between the older non-retina devices to the current screens actually made things easier to read and changed how the device was used). There's nothing more I can do with my device with a 1080p screen than with the 6/6S as it stands now. Quad HD is just dumb and 4K is laughable on a screen this small. It's just wasted memory and processing cycles.

Much more important at this stage is color accuracy, color gamut and contrast (as in accurate contrast, not blasted hyper contrast for punchiness sake.)

Some people really need to stop being fan boys and admit the truth. Everyone would have been happy if the 6s and 6s Plus would have had a better screen and no one would have been thinking that they wished the 6s would have had the same screen as the 6. It's just that Iphone customers care more about other things such as the ecosystem, ease of use, and yeah the IT factor that the Iphone just has. Right now I'm rocking a Note 5 until the 6s Plus comes out and yes I will miss this screen, it's great but for me the Iphone offers more than just a screen to me. The best things that I like about the Iphone is customer support, and the fact that I don't have to compromise on software. I get all the great IOS apps and Android apps. It's a win win for me.

But if I were buying a phone solely on screen quality it definitely would be the Note 5 hands down. And yes I can see the difference.

absolutely - Cyberguycpt has got it exactly right. no one would complain about a higher PPI screen if apple went with it, but they wouldn't go with it if it lessened the user experience in any way, i.e. with worse battery life.

I do think that Ive's obsession with "thin-ness" is overcompensating for his own uncontrolled weight gain since Steve died, and I would rather have a thicker phone without the camera bulge but a better battery - which would mean we could have a better screen. (this would mean re-engineering the 6S to have a bigger batter/better screen, and this would not be keeping with Apple's tick/tock routine, a big no-no.)

I think we won't get better screens until OLED is implemented in the phone, so that Ive can continue on his mission of thin-ness.

A whole thread of excuses again. Apple knows what is best. Apple knows how cut corners but make it better. Just like 1GB RAM, 16GB space, no HEVC, no OIS, and on and on and on. Been this way every since cut and paste took 3 years to make an appearance. Just admit it, Apple is a bit slow and cheap on these things. When it comes, they usually get it right. But don't act like this is somehow benefiting you or there is some grand motive why these things aren't implemented.

Apple knows one thing, and that is how to give as little to the masses as possible and still market the **** out of it. Ready for Retina 3D Max next year kids? It will blow you away.

Yes I can. The higher resolution of the 6+ is very apparent.

I can't.

P.S. I've had both and spent 6 months with each. There is more real estate on a 5.5" screen but it does not seem anymore sharper or more 'performant' than the 4.7" (which would certainly not give you "the experience" of a 2010-era PowerVR SGX535 driving only a 4" screen, not even a close comparison).

This is a very similar argument as regular computer screen resolutions and graphics - why are 1080p benchmarks so valued when theoretically I can buy a monitor with a "much bigger" number in the resolution box?

Have you already forgot everything Steve said? Tell me then, why HAVEN'T you just broke down got that aforementioned Note XYZ or whatever?

Okay, so what is your genius solution while retaining the same dimensions of the phone and display? Increase the DPI and make the UI smaller? Making a 3x 589PPI 2001x1125 4.7" display? No, thanks, the usage time is terrible as is.

It's disappointing but the silver lining is that it would perform better than the Plus variant because it doesn't have to drive as many pixels. Hopefully, the iPhone 7, in conjunction with A10, can enable higher resolutions.

I'm someone who's fully in favour of the 4.7" iPhone getting something close to a 1080p screen, or even better if they could cram it into 4.3-4.5" (i know i know, i'm dreaming).

That said, there's something to be said for the fact that there are more complaints of stuttering on the 5.5" iPhone. Clearly they haven't got the rest of their hardware / software up to snuff to be indiscriminately throwing in higher and higher resolution screens.

This issue is IOS based.

Why don't you buy an Android phone already? Seems like every other day you have a complaint about Apple/iOS

We'll see what happens in the 7. I didn't expect them to go and support another screen size in the 6S. But I was disappointed it didn't happen with the 6.

Yes in the 7 I expect it will be 1125p for the 4.7''

Also for me the best part of Apple is their user base. They are loyal and will stick it out .." cough cough antennagate, Bendgate", lol and will let Apple fix there issues. Over on the Samsung side people are beside themselves over the non removable battery and no SD card slot. A lot of Samsungs "loyal" customers have even gone out of there way to go to any article written about the Note 5 just to bash it. Uh well in let's see in a year who's market share has lessened and who's has increased. That's why the Iphone line of phones has the potential to truly dominate because a lot of Android users have no loyalty to any company and will just go with whom ever they feel has the best offering at the moment meanwhile Apple will continue to chip away at Androids market share.

How is that a bad thing? Fierce competition makes manufacturers strive to improve their devices.

Why should anyone be loyal to a company? That's totally irrational and quite frankly, weird.

If you continue to buy their products with a second rate screen in them, you're endorsing it.

The desire for a higher resolution screen always confuses me. I cannot see pixels on my iPhone 6 at a normal viewing distance, so I fail to see how more pixels would be a benefit.

Some people need to stop blindly comparing numbers and actually compare screens. The iPhone 6 display is the best display i have ever seen on a phone. Viewing angle is insane (most impressive aspect of it IMHO), brightness is great and the pixels are small enough to not see.

Whether or not the pixel count is higher or not is irrelevant, 326 PPI is high enough.

edit:
I had a 6 plus for a week and in the usage I had of it i found the displays basically the same other than the obvious physical size difference. I returned the 6 plus though because its just too big and unwieldy for me for a phone, personally the 6 is pushing it in terms of touch screen size IMHO.

There is nothing wrong with competition but when you go out of your way to bash a company because they don't have your vision which is what I was seeing is overkill.

It's a tech forum and very expensive tech at that, so why can't people debate or Heaven forbid criticise any of Apple's products? Recently I have agreed with an OP that the already gargantuan 6+ gaining an extra 20g of weight isn't exactly fantastic. I have also voiced my disappointment at the batteries being reduced in size, and here I am criticising the use of inferior resolution displays in the 6S. Is any of that seriously unreasonable??

I have ordered a 6S+ so none of this is a dealbreaker but Apple's products are far from the sheer perfection that many here state they are. The ridiculously over-sensitive Apple defenders really do make me giggle though.:D

You're criticising it based on on-paper numbers which do not actually matter in the real world because the numbers are 'high enough'. I just tried to make out jaggies on my iPhone 6 screen holding it less than 3 inches from my face and couldn't see any. Most of the time i use it at 12-18 inches or more away.

The DPI is high enough. 250 PPI is probably high enough for normal use, but for whatever reason the iPhone 6 screen is 326 PPI

Worry less about numbers and more about how it actually works.

Apple gear has plenty of flaws to bitch about if that's what you're trying to do - PPI however is not really one of them, unless you're just comparing on-paper spec for e-peen measuring purposes.

If you want to rattle off some flaws with the iPhone the one that really grinds my gears at the moment is the damn camera nub. The phone doesn't sit flat and steady on a table.

The thing is i am guessing apple did it deliberately to test/prove the durability of the sapphire lens (that it won't get scratches because sapphire is so hard), but it just annoys the crap out of me.

The 6+ has a noticeably crisper display. If you've fallen for the marketing spiel that the basic Retina display is as good as the eye needs then you obviously haven't spent enough time with a higher resolution device. The argument of whether 326PPI is "high enough" is obviously subjective but going back to a basic Retina screen like I am using at present (until my 6S+ arrives) is like stepping back in time. It's just not as good. I'm not talking about screen size either.

Lmao, are you serious have you seen any other phone made past 2013 lol. Iphone screen isn't bad but it's not "The Best" or is it that me and practically all phone reviewers are wrong when saying screen wise Samsung is at the top of the hill.

Yes I have, part of my job is evaluating phones. I have not seen a screen that matches the viewing angle whilst maintaining the same clarity as the iPhone 6 display on anything - phone, tablet, laptop, etc.

That's the thing though, I'm not talking about numbers. I lived with the 6+ for 10 months and the higher screen resolution was absolutely noticeable. Going back to an older iPhone whilst I wait for the 6S+ the drop in resolution has been absolutely noticeable too.

Apple usually leads with the initial introduction of the idea / concept, such as capacitive multi-touch, HiDPI screens and Touch ID but after that they tend to fall behind when everyone else proceeds to copy and increase the specifications while making ads that mock Apple afterward.

Generally, I find that Apple's approach is to ignore the rest of the industry at large and prioritize large leaps in the User Experience. Marginal improvements like higher resolutions rarely make it into their lineup. Even the 6+ was more of a desire to accommodate the still-standard 1080p resolution, hence the marketing tagline Retina HD. The only specs that seem to increase reliably year after year are processing power and cellular radios.

Apple isn't always right of course. Siri comes to mind, and in those cases, competitors like Google and Microsoft are quick to introduce superior variations. Sometimes they'll introduce their own variant of existing tech - Apple Maps, Predictive Suggestions, Ping(?) etc. and it'll fall flat or do worse.

With regard to displays however, I have a strong feeling there's going to be a shift soon. The Apple Watch is Apple's first foray into OLED displays, and it really looks nice. Apple tends to propagate innovations starting with a single device then spreading it to the rest of their lineup - I'm pretty sure that the iPhone 7 / 7+ is going to introduce leaps in both resolution and screen technology in general.

You may want to delay your purchase of the 6S / 6S+ if you already own the 6 / 6+ and are holding out for a better display.

I would rather have the great performance rather than the hit that the Plus seems to take running the higher res screen.

The 6+ was purely badly specced. Please don't think that you can't have an HD display without experiencing lag, freezing and crashing. Every single premium smartphone manufacturer other than Apple offers at least a 1080p display and the vast majority offer considerably higher resolutions. The 6+ was a bag of spanners because Apple gave it the same processor, GPU and RAM as the smaller phone with its 326PPI display - not because it had an HD display.

Lol, so one aspect makes it the best. Please read my Super Bowl Party scenario below...

You: hey guys we should have the Super Bowl at my house this year I have a 60 inch 720p HDTV.

Friend: well I have a 60 inch 4k LED TV

You: well, well, my TV has the best viewing angles.

Lmao, I think I know where I would be going. I wouldn't Care if we were all squeezed in on one couch sweaty thighs touching thighs armd touching arms. Lol
