and you know this WILL happen...just a matter of the question, WHEN?

Where's the outrage? I've seen lots of posts about AT&T being slow on the uptake and the ensuing frustration, but outrage? We're not French you know.:)

Being American, I can say for myself at least, that I do feel a bit of entitlement when it comes to getting the latest and greatest from Apple with all the bells and whistles before anyone else, because Apple is an American company. Period.

Brits get to wear cool clothes we never even see over here. Italians can buy an espresso at a GAS STATION that even the swankiest coffee boutique here can't touch for flavor and body, and it even comes with a free little cookie. Asia gets umpteen milliion cool gadgets waaay before we do, if we get them at all. The French get the best restaurants. The Swiss have chocolates and watches we only dream of.

America used to make great stuff. Now we pretty much suck. Besides baseball, the best cheeseburgers on the planet, missiles, and Apple, we ain't got a whole lot left that anyone else wants. So, if we get a little uppity when another country gets to use an iPhone feature designed on our shores before we do, just let us have our tantrum will ya?

The thing is, none of those countries mind if americans get all that stuff too. But americans (not all of them of course) seem to think they're the center of the world and they should get everything first. If europeans have 7.2 ready right now, why shouldn't they be able to enjoy it? Why should it be "if we can't have it, no one can?".

Also our forgetting that the reason you can't enjoy 7.2 is because another american company (AT&T) doesn't have the network ready for it. Why should all those other countries, that do have the network for it, be impaired because of it?

My main point is (to completely hijack a thread about an iPhone) is lets quit the American bashing. I dont think we want to go down the stereotype roles for each individual country... I promise none of you will come out lilly white!

The only reason there is some american bashing is because some americans in this thread seem to think they deserve more than anyone else. Other countries have the network ready for 7.2, why shouldn't Apple let them enjoy it?

I won't quote the whole thing, but I apologize, have all the tantrums you want! :D ... I have always wanted an In-N-Out (is that right?) burger.... maybe one day...at least we've got a Chipotle in Toronto!... that might be the closest I can get to American fine cuisine in terms of fast food.

If you're ever in Rochester, NY for whatever reason (not like you guys ever came here when we had the Ferry set up), make sure to get a garbage plate. It's kinda revolting but it's actually quite tasty and it's really only caught on here in Rochester.

But uhmm on topic, it's a bit of a bummer that we don't have the network everywhere yet, but I'd rather they give us the ability than not. Hopefully next year's model has LTE. Most of us won't have LTE, but I want that in my next one so that the day I CAN get LTE, my iPhone is ready.

I LOVE In-N-Out, burgers n fries are AWESOME!!

maybe you could get their cookout trailer to come to canada, eh...lol http://www.in-n-out.com/cookout_trailer.asp

this made me look at my location...All this time I thought 3g was out everywhere?

http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/

does this mean NOWHERE in MAINE gets 3G?????

Haha. Not everyone has 3G still and thats the sad thing. The College town I am in for around 8 months/year is 3G less and I feel like I am wasting money and not putting my phone to its full use. The Edge network is PAINFUL

Dear ATT,
Please get 3G to everyone before upgrading AGAIN to LTE (4G).

KthxBye

The HSPDA is pretty much to benefit our international friends who actually have a halfway decent carrier.

I know right? And I love all the "If you carrier supports it" and the laughing in the keynote. I was looking into getting a 3Gs but I just moved to northern Idaho and there's almost no 3G coverage up here so it's EDGE all the way. Waste of money.

One of the reasons I didn't get the iPhone 3G last year was because there was no 3G service in my area (now there's plenty). Hell, I'm still waiting for the whole west end of the county, where a lot of friends/family live, to get any GSM coverage. Verizon only very very very recently installed some new towers that provide service out there — they're the only one.

Anyway, IIRC AT&T won't be rolling out 4G until 2011, so there's two years in which they'll be upgrading to 7.2Mbps 3G, and the iPhone 3GS will be ready for that as it's deployed. People are going to be locked into their contracts during that time and, just like we're seeing right now, won't be eligible for subsidized pricing when the new model comes out next year and may not upgrade. I doubt it'll have 4G anyway.

p.s. Mmmmm In-n-out. I was already thinking of getting a burger tomorrow...

I live in manhattan, NY and we still dont have 3g yet... att needs to get their act together!

whoops i mean HSDPA... i think all of baltimore is on 4G already though.. this im pretty sure of.

Can someone please explain to my why AT&T is bothering putting up 7.2 at all, when the goal is to have 4G in two years? Doesn't it make more sense to just skip 7.2 and concentrate on 4G?

Stop making so much sense, you're embarrassing AT&T. They have yet to get their "stuff" together and thus they will be behind on 4G I believe. I just don't see how they've been allowed to function like this for so long.

i think because when LTE arrives it will still need to fall back on 3G in some cases/areas. 7.2 mbps HSDPA will still be around for a long time even if LTE is being rolled out.

I live in Surrey, about 12 miles from central London and yet don't even get Edge let alone 3G.

The title of this thread also sort of implies that only Americans are 'loyal' Apple customers..

I'm sure LTE will rely on the hardware/network backend they're putting in for 7.2. From there, it sounds like it's minimal effort to up 3G to 7.2. And certainly many markets will be slow to get LTE, just as 3G.

I'm glad they included the updated modem. Not everyone updates every year, or even two years. At least in this respect, the 3GS is future-proof.

I would prefer, however, Apple at least be honest. In its literature it says 7.2 "later this year" when really that's when the roll out is to begin and not complete for two more years.

I love this post. It made my morning a bit more bearable. Thanks guy!

Soooo I'm assuming that since I live pretty close to the nation's capital that I'll be in one of the first groups to be able to use the new speeds (hope I'm not wrong in this assumption). Is there any way, other than seeing the increased speed in your Safari, that you can see if you're getting the updated network speeds? I know when I switch to the S it's going to seem lightning quick because I'm using an Edge iPhone until it's delivered on the 19th...

I don't think the upcharge will be that stiff. Who'd pay such a ridiculous sum for phone data and when it's not even going to be available in 80% of the country? If you look at the upcharge from EDGE to 3G it is essentially $5, and that is only if you want SMS, otherwise EDGE and 3G are the same price.

Now when LTE rolls out that probably will run $80/mo for "unlimited" service b/c cell phones will essentially become VOIP phones at that point.

This post made me laugh a bit...not that I'm totally obsessed with being on the bleeding edge of tech anymore (both my Macs use PPC chips after all, and my house and car use up most of my money these days), but I agree with this comment a little bit too.

It's the same way that, as an Audi owner, I accept that only a tiny fraction of the cool cars and engine options available in Europe will ever be available in the US.

It doesn't surprise me that Apple is advertising something AT&T is not even prepared for. We see this happening with MMS, tethering, and even 3G(!) in some cases. This just shows Apple picked the wrong partner. AT&T really needs to get their act together.

Question for all you people saying its a simple software update....why is going to take AT&T through 2011 to update the towers?????

It's just a simple software update, no? Even if it is, I guess AT&T is no rush to do it since they won't finish for over 2 years!

So, now that we've put the "simple software update" aside, again, the 7.2 HSDPA update is useless for American consumers since it won't be around until the new iPhone comes out (unless you're in one of the lucky testing cities i.e. chicago/st. louis).
