A 7" iPad would really interest me, specially starting at a lower price.
If they make a 7" one it might not be too bad to integrate the Retina, but 9" would be some intense pixels to be retina.
I hope it comes out with more RAM and a faster processor, as well as a back and front facing camera.
The reason I want a 7" is mainly for picture editing.

If the 7 inch iPad has a:
  • Front facing camera
  • More RAM
  • Faster Processor
  • Bigger Hard Drive
  • Back facing camera (don't mind if it does or doesn't)
  • A flash (if it has a back facing camera)
  • Gyroscope
Then I'm getting it.

And it will also randomly spurt out rainbows and unicorns for only $99!

/sorry, i'm a bit on one, don't take me too seriously today

Do you think there would be any major hardware differences between the next 7" and 9.7" ipads? Because the rumor yesterday about next ipad models beginning testing only talked about one new ipad model.

Why would anyone want a smaller one?

If you want smaller, get a iPod Touch

Kids.

My daughter is too young for a laptop. It'd be nice for her to have something larger than an iPod because the games she likes on my iPhone are mostly puzzle games where you slide stuff around the screen. Having a bigger screen is nice for that stuff.

But an iPad is too big for her little hands and it's a bit expensive for a kid's toy. I'm not getting her one of the current ones.

But I could honestly see myself spending $300 on one that fits her hands better. A 7" iPad would be a HUGE hit for the holiday season. A 7" iPad would probably cost the same as a Playstation, thus making it a realistic kid present. The $500 iPad doesn't fit that role quite as well.

We're used to the iPhone updating once a year, but what if the iPad is more like a Macbook? Might 'twice a year' updates be possible? I think so.

I would not be surprised to see a 7" iPad come out with better specs (RAM, processor) AND to see the larger one get the same upgrades. We don't complain if iMacs are updated twice a year and say we got "screwed" when that happens. Why should we complain about iPads?

I really don't see them doing this without at least getting rid of some of the current iPad models. They'll probably retire the 16 gb versions if anything. But if the smaller ones are at a lower price point ($349, $399), they'd also have to lower the price point of the ipod touch. That makes sense since the higher capacity touches are pretty expensive for what they currently are..

Apple better get the features, functions, and pricing right with the 7 inch iPad. It will be a joke if that's not the case.

The timing doesn't make sense to me. Why release a 1st Gen 7" iPad when the 2nd Gen iPad comes out a few months later?

Home button on the 7" is off, and its too small.

Huh? iPod Touches are not too small for a home button, why would they leave it off of the 7"?

For me, 7" would be awesome and I would buy one immediately. It would be a better reader than the 9.7" because it will be smaller and lighter. I prefer to read paperbacks over hardcovers for this very reason. And also, it will likely have a forward-facing camera and 512MB of RAM, two things that are a dealer breaker for many looking to buy the current iPad.

Because it is a different device. Some people just don't like the 9.7". Its very arkward as a eBook reader (too big, too heavy).

Now this I could see actually, cut the 16GB 9" and replace it with a smaller 7", same internals, resolution, RAM (which is seriously enough people), and processor, no cameras, lower price point for greater accessibility, just like what they did with the iPod Touches (except for the size difference thing).

iOS4 will be coming in Mid-September for the iPad, that should hold some clues of what is to come.

i was just about to post the exact same. i was considering getting her the current ipad for xmas, but seems a little expensive, but a 7" model would be perfect to replace the aging powerbook 4g she currently plays games on. no club penguin though on the ipad.

What I meant was, would the ipads end up like the MBPs, where larger sizes have better specs, or would it only be a difference of size?

Nice, add front facing camera and a call cell, and I'm in -> super flat 7 inch iphone. Maybe Apple will fragment the hardware market like google's android software is the software market.

"..DigiTimes piece, sourcing its own "analyst," claimed that the device would be making a jump to the Cortex A9 processor core, 512MB of RAM like the iPhone 4, and a 1,024 x 768 pixel IPS panel -- the same resolution as the 9.7-inch iPad giving the new model a better pixel density..."

Just what Apple needs, more fragmentation. iPhone 4 sports one resolution, previous iPhones sport another and the iPad sports a third. While not as severe as the Android side, it's still something to be looked at.

They're gonna put more RAM in it. Why? Because the iPhone (and the new iPod Touch too) have 512MB of RAM. Why would they go backwards? Plus, iOS 4, as we currently know it, works best with 512MB.

As for the camera, it may not have a backwards-facing camera, but will have a forward-facing camera. Apple's gonna start to really push FaceTime with its new products. FaceTime is cool right now, but there's just no one to chat with right now.

That's what I'm curious about. Possibly they'd upgrade the iPad at the same time to keep the specs the same. It would be weird to have them out of sync.

Possibly for the first year or so I could see the iPad being updated twice a year. There are a slew of competitors coming so it wouldn't be bad to update twice a year and keep the attention of the market.

It makes sense to intro a new consumer product before the holiday season. If the folks at Cupertino want to see Facetime explode to the masses, why not include a front facing camera with all future models of iPads / iPhones....

If they release a 7 inch it, in all likelihood, will have the same resolution as the 9.7 inch: 1024 x 768. This will mean more PPI - not "retinal" but with a less "pixelly" screen.
