Luckly, the Retina display in the iPhone 4 and the iPad both have 2x resolution of the original iPhone - meaning you only need two sets of graphics (one at regular resolution, one at 2x resolution) to work on all 3 devices. Where would a 7" iPad fit in this?

I'd guess that a 7" iPad would either share the same resolution as the iPad 9" OR the resolution of iPhone 4.

Either would be possible and would mean developers wouldn't have to do much more work.

It's getting closer.

I've recently been experimenting with the concept of "What do I need for my iPhone to replace my Macbook?" Obviously, this is pretty silly right now. It's more of an abstract experiment, not a serious goal. But by trying I've learnd a lot of neat tricks.

So from what I've learned, I'm starting to guess that iOS 6 + iPad 3 in (probably) 2012 is the combination that will start causing people to exchange their laptops for iPads.

That's my official prediction.

Agreed.

I have a 13" MBP for graduate school. When I graduate in 4 years time (hopefully), I will give a gift to myself in the form of an Air (if still around) or the best iPad I can get--and make this my prime computer.

Once voice dictation/navigation becomes commonplace, the keyboard would probably only necessary for heavy duty inputting, or for people who like the physicality of typing (like me).

Maybe the 7 inch screen is for the iTV or Apple TV, it will fit in with rumors of the iTV running iOS software.

I'd be very excited about a 7" ipad as a consumer. However as a developer it makes me worried... I am all for options, but one advantage of the App Store ecosystem is that there aren't too many disparate devices to develop for. In the Android system, there are so many phones -- all of which are so different from one another -- that it's hard to keep your app working on all of them exactly the same. That's a good point. If apple develops enough ios devices, (apple tv, 7" ipad) do you think they would organize the app store more into categories of apps that work on all devices and apps that work best on one or two devices?

Hold a standard size DVD case in your hand. That's roughly the size it would be based on the difference in scale they show in the picture. It's what I was hoping for all along. Allows easy thumb typing and still comfortable to hold with both hands. If they can get it out for $399(16)/$499(32) and $529(16)/$629(32) 3G It would be a nice option.

Easy. A 7" iPad could use the same 1024x768 resolution as the 9.7". No app changes would be needed at all.

I'm betting on Apple coming out with a "Macbook Air Shell" kind of thing. It'll be the keyboard and a screen-less screen that you snap the iPad into. So, kind of like the iPad keyboard stand, but foldable.

So, laptop when you need it, iPad when you don't!

(It may even have a trackpad, just like the Macbook does. iOS doesn't have a cursor, but you could use the trackpad for any gestures not needing precice touching. Things like scrolling, zooming, and rotaing. For everything else, you touch the iPad screen itself.)

If it's more than the current iPad, I am fine with that. But I'll only buy it if it has a forward facing camera, more RAM, and RETINA.

sweet

This might be what I want! I couldnt decide between an iPod touch 4th gen or iPad 2nd gen but this might be better! The iPad is a little to uncomfterable and big for me to move my whole hand across. However I like having a bigger screen than on the iPod touch because... yea its just way too small for some webpages and stuff. For me I sneak my iPod into my room at night so I can watch youtube and talk to ppl and stuff when Im not supposed to. The for the iPad i could do the same thing (just tell them im charging it or whatever) but with a 7" it would be much easier to use in bed.

Would be tempting at the right price.

I would expect it to incorporate the next generation Apple ARM SoC, let's call it the A5 for convenience.

I am also thinking the Verizon iPhone will be using this - I read that it would be using a 1.2GHz processor.

So - 1.2GHz "A5" with 512MB RAM. A5 is hopefully a Cortex A9 core (or cores).

The 7" screen will have around half the area of the 9.7" screen (23.5 square inches vs 45.2 square inches). That will require half the power operate. The new SoC could have better power characteristics as well. The area of the device that can be used for battery will be a lot less too though. but it might be possible to keep the 10 hour battery life.

The 7" device will be useful for people who don't want something as large as the iPad, nor as heavy (hopefully it will be under 800g). I'd be interested most definitely, whilst the current iPad isn't really attracting me due to size/weight issues (and certainly first generation issues).

Cameras and the like are still unknown, but I would expect FaceTime support at the very least.

7" 16GB - $399
9.7" 16GB - $499

It won't have retina. It's too many pixels, meaning too expensive for the price range the ipad has settled into. Anyway, the ipad doesn't need retina.

Am I the only one...

who wants to see the form factor GET BIGGER?

I dream of being able to rip the screen off my 15" MBP and use it as a touch enabled Apple device.

An iPad mini will be great. As light and small as possible. Pocketable. Now, a bluetooth remote control is needed for presentations.

No, but that's where it's headed. Technology just isn't at the point yet where a tablet can replace a Macbook Pro for all the heavy work Macbook Pros do.

BLECH! A smaller 7" iPad? I'm sure it'll sell....but I'd never buy one. The 9" iPad is the PERFECT size for me. A great laptop replacement for when I'm traveling. Perrfect for surfing the web. Perfect for typing on. I can't imagine going smaller. At least for me.

If I want smaller, I'll bring my iPod touch with me.

Speaking of which, the rumored iPod touch with the retina display, front and back facing cameras? Now THAT is something I WILL buy fo sho. :p

But I'll pass on the 7" iPad. For one thing I already have the 9" iPad. But given the choice between the two sizes, I'd chose the 9" iPad every time.

The only time I'd trade it in is when the iPad gets a front facing camera. :)

I just can't see this happening. Why segment the market, to achieve a new price point? The whole spectrum from $200 on up to a $800 is covered by iOS devices. iPods up to iPads. Where does a 7 inch fit in? It doesn't because it drives the price of those devices either up or down when they are already very successful at those price points.

:D LOL

Remember a year ago how computer users all said "iPad? Why not just buy an iPod. Pointless!"

I am highly amused to see that, one year later, it's iPad owners who are now making this exact same argument.

If the 7 inch iPad has a:
  • Front facing camera
  • More RAM
  • Faster Processor
  • Bigger Hard Drive
  • Back facing camera (don't mind if it does or doesn't)
  • A flash (if it has a back facing camera)
  • Gyroscope
Then I'm getting it.

A 7inch model will likely be the budget edition - it'll be the 9.7inch edition that will (whenever) get that cool stuff.

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.

What like Android does with new phones every other week?

TBH, six months is decent enough for me. HP and the like release improved versions of their laptops more frequently than that. It'd just be a big shift for Apple.

My dream is a 15" Apple tablet that runs a full version of OS X but contains an Apple virtualization program that lets me run iOS. In my mind this device would be all work AND all play. I get all the advantages in both device size and application range to do content creation through OS X but also all the games, augmented reality apps, etc. of the iOS app store.

Suit in the front, party in the back :D
