iOS4 will be coming in Mid-September for the iPad, that should hold some clues of what is to come.

Well, we don't know about mid-Sept, but sometime in the fall. And we will see a new iDevice with it. I don't know why people are getting their panties in a knot about a new iPad coming out. If it makes you feel better, call it a large iPod Touch.

The only way I can see them doing a 7 is as a replacement to the 10" in iPad 2 and I don't see any need for that. I guess we'll see in the coming months though.

But, there really isn't a "need" for the 9.7" iPad either. That's selling very well though.

The refresh to the iPod Touch in September plus the first refresh of the 9" iPad will both get front-facing cameras and Facetime. The 7" iPad will lack Facetime and a camera and will be a direct competitor to devices like the Nook and the Kindle, as mentioned earlier. The "revolutionary" selling point of the 7" iPad will be its price, which will be as low or only slightly higher (come on, it is AAPL we're talking about) than its competitors. Just speculating here.

EDIT: Facetime will be the feature that prevents cannibalization of the Touch and the larger iPad. The thinking will be, why add a camera to something that's aimed at the reader market?

It wouldn't make sense to release different ipads at different dates. If the 7" comes out by christmas, but no new 9.7", some people will buy the new 7", but many will wait to see how much better the 9.7" will be and the difference in cost. If apple releases them at the same time, there will be a better initial reaction in people buying them.

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.

So you just want them to do it to piss people off?

I think Apple want to model this on their Mac line:

iPad - iMac
7" iPad - Mac Mini
iPhone - MacBook Pro
iPod Touch - MacBook

Two product categories (iPad/iPhone vs Desktop/Notebook), with the iPhone being the ultra-portable iPad in the same way a MacBook is a portable Mac.

Basically, what I'm trying to get at is that I think this is Apple's new Multi-touch computer lineup. I don't think it's a secret that they see the future of computing in multi-touch and away from the desktop (desktop sales have been declining across the industry for about a decade, the trend is towards laptops and mobile computers). The ultimate result of all of this is that they see the iPad as your new computer, and your iPhone as your new laptop.

I sort of agree. I don't think the iPad is ready yet to replace your desktop, but given how infrequently I use my laptop now I have an iPad, I can see it happening within the next 5-10 years.

Maybe that stock isn't so overpriced after all...

The more I think about it the more I think the specs will be different too, just to keep the prince range wider. They'll each have the same processors and RAM (since Apple never focuses on those in the advertising) but different external features.

I'm guessing the next update (whenver it is) will be something like:

iPad 7"
16 GB only
No Cameras
1024-by-768 (Same as current 9" iPad's)

iPad 9.7"
32 GB or 64 GB
Front Camera
Higher Resolution Display (What, exactly, I don't know)
Better battery life (obviously)

I like the sound of the updated 9.7 iPad. The 7 inch ... not so much. A 9.7inch iPad is a perfect size (in my opinion); all i'm waiting for is a Front facing camera, gyro and more RAM - the 7 inch is a big no-no.:D

Gps

if it had GPS unit and dash mountable, it will make GPS unit and with other things ...

Price going to make all the difference; Apple has all the $$$ to make things cheaper and price it competitively.

Recently no product from Apple failed; all are 1 million unit success (which other manufacturer do not have)

If the 7 inch iPad has a:
  • Front facing camera
  • More RAM
  • Faster Processor
  • Bigger Hard Drive
  • Back facing camera (don't mind if it does or doesn't)
  • A flash (if it has a back facing camera)
  • Gyroscope
Then I'm getting it.

If the iPad 7" has any of those I'd eat my hat.

Main difference between the two will be screen size.

There is no way they are going to do any substantial internal hardware revision changes when the iPad 9" still hasn't been fully released worldwide, and where shortages / supply issues still persist.

Apple have taken enough ***t from the antenna issue on the iPhone 4 without causing another unnecessary iCry from iPad users feeling iBurnt.

Yeah! But imagine all the millions people who might be happy they waited!

Please tell us or Apple's marketing dept. how long should a company wait till they improve their product?

Wtf

Great way to rebut all the iPad haters who say its "just a big iPod touch". The iPad's screen size IS what makes it special and uhh...magical. The 7inch model will be analogous to every lame POS SUV crossover that doesnt have the space or power of a full size, and doesnt have the MPG of a car. Woo Hoo! Way to go half ass Apple. Lets just wait for a better 10inch iPad (SD slot, higher PPI, 512Mb RAM, iChat cam, and an evolved [dare I say ULV dual core CPU])

if the 7" has at least a front facing cam, and a no more than 349$ price tag...I'll nix the netbook i was going to buy my daughter and get her and my gf's oldest one also fir xmas...

If Apple doesn't use a Retina display, us developers could use the interfaces for the iPhone 4 to fit this screen. If you're a developer, you can change the iPhone simulator to the iPhone 4, and see it's screen size based on the resolution difference....Very interesting.

This would be a great way to compete directly with the nook and kindle to serve as a smaller, more portable reading device.

What are you talking about? iPhone 4 didn't add a larger screen, just higher resolution. Unless your fingers got smaller there is no way this changes things.

The more interesting implications of a 7" screen is that the UI on the current iPad is larger then the iPhone. Making a 7" screen would create size parity. It is as small as they can go and still make the UI just as easy to use with your fingers as the iPhone.

I agree--the 64 Gig iPad is almost the perfect solo computer for the undergraduate humanities student. In a few years I could imagine the iPad being the prime computer for many people.

You do realize that's the iPhone 4, which costs more sans-contract than most of the iPads?

My guess:

In January, Apple will release CDMA 3G iPads compatible with Verizon (maybe this 7 inch). It will not release a Verizon iPhone at that time.

At the normal new iPhone release window, Apple will release GSM & CDMA iPhone 5s. That is why there were two models in the code that BGR found. One is GSM, the other CDMA. iPhone 5 will be in line with the recent rumor of a larger screen, faster processor, internal antenna. There may be changes to the materials as well, specifically, the metal alloy may make an appearance.

It's getting closer.

I've recently been experimenting with the concept of "What do I need for my iPhone to replace my Macbook?" Obviously, this is pretty silly right now. It's more of an abstract experiment, not a serious goal. But by trying I've learnd a lot of neat tricks.

So from what I've learned, I'm starting to guess that iOS 6 + iPad 3 in (probably) 2012 is the combination that will start causing people to exchange their laptops for iPads.

That's my official prediction.

If you've read the article about the code BGR found, you must've seen that the article only mentioned one ipad, not two. The iphone may be cdma next release, but there are no rumors about cdma ipad.

That's interesting speculation on your part! Do you think perhaps the 7" iPad might actually be the new AppleTV Or iTV? It would be a way to differentiate size, function, context, and pricing, would it not?

I'd be very excited about a 7" ipad as a consumer. However as a developer it makes me worried... I am all for options, but one advantage of the App Store ecosystem is that there aren't too many disparate devices to develop for. In the Android system, there are so many phones -- all of which are so different from one another -- that it's hard to keep your app working on all of them exactly the same. Luckly, the Retina display in the iPhone 4 and the iPad both have 2x resolution of the original iPhone - meaning you only need two sets of graphics (one at regular resolution, one at 2x resolution) to work on all 3 devices. Where would a 7" iPad fit in this?
