Believable as I can see it aimed at those considering the cheaper e-reader devices for reading.

I was wondering, cause that seems to be the only reason this would be produced, the iPad is kinda small as it is.

People keep forgetting that the iPad is a tethered device. It needs a host computer at times. Maybe Jobs will deign to let users detach entirely at some point, but for now getting an iPad means having a home base somewhere.

Jobs said "Yep, someday" in an email about this subject a while ago. When that means, is anyone's guess.

I'd say cloud iTunes and WiFi syncing would go very far to a fully-detached iPad though.

I checked out the iPad and I noticed it's too heavy,

All that aluminium and glass has go. It seemed too beefy since the announcement.

If you're used to using a modbook, at like I dunno, 8 pounds, an ipad feels like it's floating in your presence.

I like the sturdiness of the glass & metal. Unlike every other tablet we've owned, the ipad doesn't creak or squeek.

While true, I also wonder how many people bought them, activated them in-store, and never understood, knew or bothered to connect them to another computer again. I know more than a few people with the original iPhone that are still using their original OS install. ...I've told them, but they just don't care.

I'd bet it's a healthy percentage.

What about putting media, ie: photos, onto it? You need a computer for that (ATM).

When do you think it would be announced? I'm planning on getting a new 4th gen touch, but would get this instead if it was confirmed! Thoughts??

Methinks you are unclear on what "can play 1080p video" means.

You need 1920x1080 pixels to, which the iPad doesn't have.
Decoding & downgrading the data stream doesn't count.

Methinks you are unclear on what "can play 1080p video" means.

Play means able to run, because the 3GS can "play" 720p video too. "Display" means needing 1920x1080 pixels.

I just can't see this happening. Why segment the market, to achieve a new price point? The whole spectrum from $200 on up to a $800 is covered by iOS devices. iPods up to iPads. Where does a 7 inch fit in? It doesn't because it drives the price of those devices either up or down when they are already very successful at those price points.
A 7-inch tablet fits it with all the eReaders in the marketplace.

There is already very strong demand for a device of this size. It should be pointed out that every single one of these "smaller iPad" rumor threads (here at MacRumors and elsewhere) has many people expressing their desires for such an item.

In the end, it's not about a handful of tech rumor-mongers. It's about the overall marketplace. It appears that Joe Consumer already is buying many devices of this size (Kindle, Nook, etc.).

When do you think it would be announced? I'm planning on getting a new 4th gen touch, but would get this instead if it was confirmed! Thoughts??
September or October. With maybe one early November exception several years ago, Apple never announces anything in the last two months of the year. If there is no announcement by the end of October, the next plausible time would be in January, probably in the latter half of the month.

Is 9 inches too big?

I thought 9 inches was just the right size but my wife says it is too big, doesn't fit in her purse, and difficult to handle. She says while she appreciates the 9 inch model, a 7 incher would satisfy her needs. Since we have only one in the family, she'll have to deal with the big one.

Apple will definitely keep the aluminum. They could give the screen the anti-glare screen like the MBA if they wanted to cut weight.

They'll definitely keep the glass too. ATM, edge-to-edge glass and aluminium is bread and butter to Apple. If it doesn't have it, it's ugly.

DON'T DO IT

i bought one itouch, 3rd gen, like 7-8 months ago and i kind of regret it..250euro, damn it

don't get me wrong, the device is awesome..but i'm not that much on the road or like that and that small screen really bugs me..i use it for music mostly and some gaming, now and then..movies,magazines,internet browsing stuff like this?! no chance.

get a bigger screen, trust me..

a 7" could be awesome, if it would come at a low cost..

What will this do to the current iPad?

What about cannibalization?

Will the iPad 9.7" get the rumored hybird OS system that this site rumored awhile back?

Anyword on storage?

Will the 7" have more ram and a faster processor?

What about "extras" will the 7" ipad have cameras, better display, gyro?

What about apps, will they scale correctly?

Will the 9.7" iPad get a minor refresh?

What about price?

Please answers these questions for me.:)

You shouldn't have bought the iPad if you wanted multitasking on it. It was never advertised as doing that.

A powerful and capable machine like the iPad wouldn't be for multitasking? While an iPhone or an iPod touch yes?

And what about the Safari refreshing limitation? It's all about RAM. The iPad is "the best surfing experience" .. And THAT WAS advertised.

I think for this to be worth releasing, it would be $299 for say 16GB, which puts it closer to the larger Kindle. At the same time, the base 9" at $499 could be upgraded to 32GB RAM. Alternatively, the new $299 iPod Touch will have 32GB plus new features such as retinal display.

I think pricing along the entire product line would be consistent, and they would be able to fill in the middle ground between iPod Touch and iPad.

I am guessing they had prototyped this display size already. They ended up going with the 9", but the 7" remained a possibility as an additional iPod model if the 9" was successful. They now have a great opportunity to expand the iPad market with a $300 model.

I would love for this to be true. Even better price point!

How would this affect app's that fit the 9" something screen? Would it scale down correctly or would it be yet another size the developer have to account for?

ding ding ding.
THAT's the issue.
That, and the fact that Apple doesn't actually NEED to diversify yet. They still can't make the existing model fast enough.
There's a pace to these things, and while I think there will be a 7" model at some point, there's a LOT of iPads to be sold in the current configuration, particularly having the market all to itself.

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.
I don't agree with this. I'm a 64GB 3G owner and I still want Apple to continue to innovate and continue to create sales no matter what I've bought. The product we bought was good enough for us to open our wallets and we need to accept the fact that Apple must march on.

Six month is what most everyone generally agrees is the cycle computers (and the like) is on between revisions.

I mostly disagree because I only bought one for the wife and would like an upgraded model for myself. Merry Christmas to me! :D

I have a 3rd gen, and I love it! I use it all the time. It's pocket sized and is perfect for checking stuff whenever I want. A larger screen would be nice too if it maintained the portability and similar price point!

That's not what I meant. What I meant is that it is was and never has been advertised as being able to mulitask. You can't complain at Apple if it does it poorly, which it won't - but that's beside the point.

The Safari refreshing limitation isn't just RAM. It's a limitation in iOS 3.2 - Safari is only given a very small amount of RAM to work inside. iOS4 changes this though. That's why your iPhone 3GS can keep quite a few more pages on iOS4 than your iPad can.

I agree with you, in fact I don't regret my iPad, but I don't understand why not put 512MB RAM 3 months ago, in order to release the iOS4 in september/october.

And Apple has usually a 1-year cycle, not six months.
Remember when they dropped the first iPhone price.

No one knows since the 7" iPad is currently in vaporware status.
What about cannibalization?
Ditto.

Will the iPad 9.7" get the rumored hybird OS system that this site rumored awhile back?
Steve said the current iPad will get iOS 4 this fall. He did not specify an exact date.

Anyword on storage?

No one knows as nothing has been announced.

What about apps, will they scale correctly?
My guess is that a properly written app will scale correctly. Some developers may need to update their code to be compliant with whatever UI guidelines Apple sets after the product has been announced.

Will the 9.7" iPad get a minor refresh?
Unknown as nothing has been announced.

Note that Apple does not usually pre-announce products or release early specs. You have to wait like everyone else to find out what they have up their sleeves. I can't answer your questions nor can anyone else. If you want concrete answers, go visit www.apple.com. If you don't see specifications there, then Apple hasn't announced anything.

Who cares about cannibalization, this is about overall expansion of the available market for Apple products. Apple doesn't worry about 'cannibalization' between 16GB and 32GB iPhone models. The 9" iPad has been a great success at a high price point, now let's see what they can do with a model that is really priced at netbook levels.

The 9" iPad will improve anyway. I am guessing the base model could get bumped to 32GB RAM. The base 7" iPad would have 16GB RAM, and maybe first gen iPad CPU?

Hold a standard size DVD case in your hand. That's roughly the size it would be based on the difference in scale they show in the picture.

Actually it would be a little larger... 7" is the size of the screen, not the whole device. A little wider as well.
But still, I agree that at some point it will be an attractive option. I can see leaving the house with it easier than I do with my iPad (which I love nevertheless.)
