If a 7 inch ipad comes out, it would kill the following.....

-ipod touch
-PSP
-Nintendo DS
-Amazon Kindle
-Nook
-Zune
-netbooks

That's not what I meant. What I meant is that it is was and never has been advertised as being able to mulitask.

Ok, but don't you think it was an obvious point for such a capable machine that has been introduced as a third product between iPhone and MacBooks?

The iPad seemed unusable holding it with one hand, maybe a smaller one will feel safe, even if they keep the aluminium and glass, because of the reduced momentum.

The iPad is at 132ppi. If they doubled the ppi like they did with the iPhone, it would be at 264ppi for the 9.7" model and a 7" would be at 365ppi, actually MORE retina than the iPhone. I suppose it makes sense if Apple is dedicated to superdefinition display technologies.

No need to worry about cannibalization any more than we should about new iPod models back in the day. People used to say the Nano would cannibalize sales from other iPods, and then the touch would ruin sales for other models, etc.

Who cares? Apple's style is to produce several models with varying sizes and specs and then let the market decide what they want. The current iPad model is the anomaly: only one model. Apple's style tells us there will be new versions of the iPad side by side in the store with the original model.

iPad variations (5", 7") seems like the right move.
It'll allow Apple to widen their market - different sizes for different requirements and lower price point ($399 entry?)

Nope, too soon. They are JUST launching in other countries. Furthermore, demand is adequate for this model. Apple doesn't release multiple iPhones and iPod Touches.

It won't kill the iPod touch because you can't stick an iPad in a jeans pocket.

It is unlikely to kill any of the products listed above although it may eat away some marketshare. We already know that netbook manufacturers are decreasing factory output because of the iPad. Some of the weaker eReader companies may eventually give up but I don't see how a touchscreen media tablet will eliminate the handheld game device marketplace in the next few years.

ipod touch, no. itouch is ultrapotable, ipad 7", not as much
psp and ds, no. People will want analog gaming controls for a while now. Also, with 3DS coming on the horizon, DS will definitely be staying.
kindle and nook, maybe. They came before, so they grabbed a good chunk of the market. If 7" is really popular, it's still a maybe.
zune, already done by ipods.
netbooks, those would be killed by the 9.7". With the expected specs of any 7", 9.7" next gen will do a lot more.

But they do release multiple iMacs, MacBooks, and iPods.

As long as someone is buying a Kindle over an iPad, then there is additional untapped demand for a smaller, less expensive iPad.

Hummm... I don't get it. Not like Apple to muddy the waters with too many models unless they have a specific market in mind???? Not sure? To me, it seems unlikely.

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.

I'm always amazed by this. Don't come out with better versions of your product, as it will offend your existing customers.

Who cares about cannibalization, this is about overall expansion of the available market for Apple products. Apple doesn't worry about 'cannibalization' between 16GB and 32GB iPhone models. The 9" iPad has been a great success at a high price point, now let's see what they can do with a model that is really priced at netbook levels.

The 9" iPad will improve anyway. I am guessing the base model could get bumped to 32GB RAM. The base 7" iPad would have 16GB RAM, and maybe first gen iPad CPU?

Yeah, they are going to jump from 256MB to 16GB RAM in one generation. Methinks you are confusing RAM with storage space. :)

Come on, I'm not saying that. But in this case the iPad has been launched only 2-3 months ago. Do you really want a 6 months cycle?

Although if Apple take too long coming out with better versions, like the Mac Pro and Apple TV, people still get annoyed.

Told you guys . . and look forward to more sizes and functions. It makes sense, because different folks have different needs. The ipad is great but I'm sure there are those who want something lighter / smaller. Some also want to be able to do different things better as far as what the tablet's staple function is. Can't wait, this is going to be good . . :D

....

Why the hell Apple didn't make the first iPad with 512MB RAM!? They were surely already developing iOS4.

I really don't understand why.

I think they just wanted to get something out there quickly and cheap (lower the price point so that they get a bigger market)

Most of the Apple's products are initially underpowered and under featured... then if it succeeds, they add more stuff and get you to buy again.
