Makes sense... they basically just want what everyone else is using so they won't be somehow missing out on something.

You don't have to buy the iPhone outright - iPhone plans contracts aren't overly expensive compared to other phones.

When mommy and daddy are footing the bill, everyone wants an iPhone! When the kiddies finally are pushed out on their own (or at least into the basement), suddenly that cheaper Android looks a whole lot more attractive! :D

Yet another ignorant few who automatically assume rich parents spoil kids.

Ever consider the fact that iPhones are indeed superior in usability, convenience, streamline experiences and app store content? Not that "well I got an iPhone because I don't have to pay" but "I got one because _ _ _ and _ and right now my parents or I can pay merely $30 a month for it."

Still, a $479 Android smartphone like the OnePlus 3T seems more attractive to the budget-conscious than a $749 iPhone 7.

(I chose the OnePlus to compare because it has relatively good specs and receives OS updates often enough)

How is Nike sitting at 9% of fitness bands and Apple is at 10%? Didn't Nike kill off their Fuel Bands a year or two ago and start collaborating with Apple to produce the Nike edition of the Apple Watch? Are there still that many Fuel Bands in use? That being said, I'd much rather let my teenager use a defunct Nike product as opposed to an Apple product that starts at $269 when purchased new.

These numbers are pretty telling, 2nd place or no, the Apple Watch is not being embraced by teens, where the fitbit is the overwhelming choice.

I could have sworn about six months ago, all the analysts were pushing some garbage about how the younger people had all lost interest in the iPhone because there was lack of innovation and the iPhone hadn't changed in design for a year or so. That's what makes me sick of these people. Are they going to say that teens suddenly changed their minds over the last six months? I hardly doubt that. An iPhone is an iPhone and if their peers think iPhones are "sick gear" then other teens will want them. I don't know if iPhones are magical or spectacular but they're really decent status products and if I were a teen, I'd certainly want one. (Although I'd probably worry about getting my iPhone jacked by some school thugs).

iPhones also have good resale value. They're valuable items. iPhones will hold their value better than any Android smartphone. I'm not saying there aren't nice Android flagship smartphones that are even equal in features to the iPhone (maybe some have more features). I'm only saying I can't see any teenager giving the thumbs down to an iPhone just because it might lack some innovation that analysts always like to spew their crap about. If those teen's parents are footing the bill, I'm sure they'll ask for an iPhone. Apple should do quite well this year with iPhone sales so I'm not concerned at all.

This is simple. Teens are highly status-concious and droid phones signal low status.

I think many have missed the point. It's not whether they can afford it or whether parents or grandparents buy it for them. It's about their choice and preference. It demonstrates why there's iPhone and then there's everything else.

The iPhone is iconic Many of you like to disparage Apple and it's current offerings but they are still killing it in terms of success in the marketplace.

Teens nowadays are earning money just doing crazy in YouTube. Even throwing iPhones in YouTube can make you buy 10 iPhones.

Let's remember these are the same folks who kept saying year after year that an Apple-branded television was imminent.
We'll have an iphone 7s as is customary. And a gussied up version of it maybe even with an OLED screen as the commemorative 10 yr anniversary model. But the iPhone 8 is over a year away.

Wall Street with their "supercycle" echo-chamber poo. Tisk tisk.

They poo it, eat it, and regurgitate it. That's the real "supercycle."
They are going to eat more than that by the end of the year when they see that the iPhone 8 is slated for next year.
Crow and poo with a side dish of humble pie.

My ex is trying to get my 21 yo son on his old samsung when he upgrades. It is absolutely huge. Instead I got him a hand-me-down iphone 5s from an uncle for free. Works with his ipad and macbook. Plus I can text him for free on my ipad as I don't have a smart phone. It is super small and fits in his front pocket very easily.

the 5s is a far better device than most new Android phones. Updates to the latest OS too. Unlike even newer Android devices.
Sexier too.

I am interested to see how this changes with the end of subsidized pricing.

Many surveys have already found huge shifts in how younger people spend money - less on apparel and a lot more on certain electronics, with smart phones topping the charts. However, with the end of subsidized pricing, one is going to need a lot more expendable income to buy an iPhone. For some, this just might not be economically feasible if they have already directed most of their expendable income from other sources to phone expenses and this only covers what had historically been the $200/300/400 pricing classes based on contract renewal?

The increase in interest may be in response to the upcoming iPhone release - but the actual phone many teens wind up with may not necessarily be a 2017 iPhone, especially in regards to the anticipated flagship model with very high pricing? The Corvette ZR1 or Ford GT500 may increase the sales of other tiers (or even completely separate product families) and buying habits could be indirectly influenced by such.

Ot the $399 ZTE Axon 7 that has better specs than the OP3T AND iPhone. :)

Apple has been a CE company and not simply a computer company for many years now.

Pricisely why the iPhone, iPad, and iWatch are over-priced. They are consumer electronics—consumption devices—entertainment devices—not tools. Please don't mistake them for luxury goods. Luxury items have re-sale value and aren't made obsolete so easily.

I doubt Jobs would have been satisfied with those products' success at the expense of the tool products. He wanted his products to inspire creators and progress the arts, sciences and humanities—something Apple used to offer examples of on their website.

When—not if—Apple abandons its roots, and only makes consumer products, they will be at the mercy of a fickle consumer who readily switches brands for the sake of newness.

For $399 the iphone SE is by the far a better choice. Even a used 5s is better than most newer Android junkware.

LOL. The Axon 7 I've got is better than my previous iPhone 6+. The wife had a 5s. It was nothing special.
