DELL 3007WFP 30" x 2 For $2548 (both)

Ouch... that hurts. This is no joke. I have been doing 90% of my work on-site at more up to date facilities. Over the past four or so years it has only been spill over projects and such that I'd have to do at home. I agree that it is cripplingly slow... I can't run Apple's Motion at home nor could I even upgrade to 10.4 for some reason. The installer said it wouldn't work, maybe cause of the RAM. I tried though. Before moving to the mac I had been running dual processor PC workstations from HP for years. Those seem ridiculously inhibiting now as well... I will do this system right though...

DUAL 8-core 2.6?
At least 6GB RAM to start
3 TB storage
ATI x1900 ? (other suggestions?)
Dual Dell 24"

Any suggestions?

I guess the only thing now is to drop the cash and pick-up Octamac! :D
Should have called Apple about why Tiger wouldn't install. I've put it on old G3 iMacs. And that was above the 256MB minimum RAM requirement. Were you trying to install it from a stand alone Tiger installer. Also that computer only has CD player. So did you get the Tiger CD Set on install discs?

What about DUAL 30" DELLs for about $2548 ($1274 each)? Or at least one 30 + 24 for only $1993. The 24 rotates into portrait mode and rotation is supported by the ATI card.

I'm born again about my new DELL 3007WFP 30" monster. But would like two. :D Wonder how I got along without it 'til now. The 24 on the side looks positively dimunitive. I love the new stand all their '07 monitors now sport. Big improvement over the previous '05 stand. But honest to God I am not selling 'em.

Can someone tell me If it's a confirmed rumor that tomorow will be anunced the octo core MAC PRO??...I 'm waiting to buy one and this is important for me.

Don't Need ATI To Run Two 24" or One 30" Or Less + 24" Or Less

Dual 4 core cpu
Start with 4x1gb stick, total of 4gb
You'll need Ati 1900 to run dual monitors
Not to run two monitors. The base card supports One 30" and less + 24" and less. Only need the ATI Card to run two 30" OR buy a second NVIDEA card to run two 30" and less + two 24" and less.
Can someone tell me If it's a confirmed rumor that tomorow will be anunced the octo core MAC PRO??...I 'm waiting to buy one and this is important for me.
Nothing is confirmed. We GUESS/THINK/HOPE/PRAY it MIGHT be tomorrow.

I can't find Intel's announcement Clovertown's are shipping. I was only able to find this crumb of "competition" from DELL coming THIS week at Information Week published last Wednesday November 8:

Dell Preps Quad-Core Blades

"Dell next week plans to begin shipping its first workstations and servers able to run quad-core Intel processors in a two-socket configuration.

The upgraded system will feature quad-core Intel Xeon processors for Dell's two-socket servers -- the PowerEdge 1900, 1950, 2950, 2900, SC1430 and 1955 blades. Customers also will be able to configure its two-socket Precision 690 and Precision 490 with the Xeon processors, Dell said. The single-socket Precision 390 supports the Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor.
" Kentsfield.

Should I order the comp with whatever the base Video Card is and then upgrade myself from another store? Which do you reccomend?

Currently, no other vendors are selling video cards for the Mac Pro. Some Mac parts vendors have them, but they're charging the same prices Apple is.

Get the X1900XT card. It's not a bad price to upgrade to it when you order and it's the best value for the money. The FX4500 is only slightly faster overall and only offers a few oddball features needed by very few applications. If you don't know what you would need an FX4500 for, then you don't need one. Also, there's a chance that Apple may start offering some new options when they release the 8-core systems...

As for RAM, don't buy 512MB modules! They run at half the bandwidth of the 1 and 2 GB modules! Resale on 512MB FB-DIMMs is practically nothing, so even though it's more espensive, it's best to order with the lowest config that Apple offers using 1GB modules and then add more RAM from another vendor yourself. But I'm hoping that Apple updates their memory prices and choices when they start offering the octo configs.

DELL Precision™ 690 Presages 8-Core Mac Pro

Here's a look at DELL's 8-core Precision™ 690 offering that will be competing with the 8-core Mac Pro soon. Configurator won't let me add a Quad Core Xeon much less a pair of them yet. Looks like this is going to be much more expensive than what Apple will offer. Wow, Dell's 4-core Dual Woody Xeon computers are radically more expensive than Mac Pros.

Hopefully we'll be able to buy the Apple alternative tomorrow. :)

Its been a tough decision between the 30" and the 24" Dells. But in all honesty, I don't have the desk real estate to handle two 30" displays. I can't even set them far enough back most likely to see the whole screen!! :p

You mentioned that ATI supports rotation.. so if it get the 1900 I can edit my portait (vs. landscape) photography in say photoshop without having to be zoomed so far out to see the whole pic... That would be awesome!!!

Yeah. So two 24" Dells it is.

Now we just wait and see if it'll be released tomorrow...

Apple Wants +$989 Educational For Base Of Four 1GB Modules

Can also keep the base card and buy the ATI for only + $359 Ed in addition to it in the same order if you want to drive 4 monitors (like I do), but no more than three 30" ones.
Currently that's a PLUS $989 Educational or $1099 list for a base of four 1GB mods. What's the developer price for that option? $825?

I think I'd rather toss the two 512's and buy 2x2GB from 18004Memory for $700.

But, like you, I hope they realign the RAM pricing structure tomorrow.

...but you can buy 4 for $2700 or Four 1GB sticks for $1100 way over market price of $665 at 18004MEMORY.com via this Ramseeker.com link per 2x2GB Kit or $1330 for 8GB in four 2GB sticks.

Multimedia,

I looked this up and have a question. There a re two types of Memory listed on these sites. One is more expensive and says "THIS IS AN APPLE RECOMMENDED WITH WIDE APPLE HEAT SPREADER 4GB KIT OF 2PCS OF 2GB DDR2 667MHZ PC2-5300 240 PIN ECC FULLY BUFFERED DIMM FOR THE NEW APPLE MAC PRO SERIES. This is an Apple Approved memory manufactured with Apple approved heatsink Memory module. Includes a licensed heat spreader to prevent overheating. This is the only heat spreader which will keep the memory temperature below 145 degrees F."

Does this make a big difference? Should I be spending the extra couple hundred dollars per 4GB kit (2GBx2) or not?

Need to phone to ask what the $695 gets us. Or I'll go with Two 2GB Sticks from MaxSink with real good heat sinks for $789. Still less money than Apple's best.

Only 9 More Hours Until We Can Order Our 8-Core Mac Pro
Wouldn't we see more rumors or hints if that were true?
Not necessarily. This product is way off the mainstream consciousness and not considered ready for popular press yet.

I didn't see news of the susposed Intel Press Event announcing Clovertown shipments though. So I may be only trying to wish this into reality and if it doesn't happen tomorrow, I will have to eat crow since I seem to be the only one here claiming it will. And I have nothing but circumstantial evidence to base my belief it will. And my belief is mostly hope. :p

Is it better for performance when making a 4GB upgrade to use 2x2GB or 4x1GB sticks of RAM. I am about to make a 4GB RAM upgrade to my existing 2GB of RAM that are 4x512.

Pull The Four 512's Add 2x2GB And It Will Run Faster Than If You Don't

Is it better for performance when making a 4GB upgrade to use 2x2GB or 4x1GB sticks of RAM. I am about to make a 4GB RAM upgrade to my existing 2GB of RAM that are 4x512.
Both run at same speed so 2x2 is better. But if you pull the 4x512 it will run faster without them because the whole shebang slows down to the slowest sticks of RAM.

However, the "slower" speed may not be discernable from the "faster" speed in real life. And having 6GB of RAM may be more important than losing a little speed.

MacMall or Bust

Can anyone tell me how long after an initial Apple offering it will take for MacMall to offer these 8-core macs?

I ask because the "bill me later" on macmall is 6 months no payments, while Apple store's "bill me later" only gives you until the end of ONE billing cycle before accruing finance charges.

Also, I see that on MacMall I could still get the ATI 1900 xt upgrade but it doesn't seem like there are options for the second dual-layer DVD burner or Bluetooth... things like that. Can I add a second drive or Bluetooth later? (used to upgrades in PCs not MACs) or are there issues with doing this aftermarket...

Thanks.

When Is It Coming Out!?

I'm getting really impatient. I really need this to video compress and would really really need it soon. I saved cash up for this (initially the MACPRO) but then my teacher said to hold on and wait for to Octo coming out mid nov. I've been checking on this website and apple's website to see if the good news would finally officially happen. I checked last night and boom nothing. What is Apple waiting for? This is perfect timing to announce before christmas and grab all the people who are going for Dell. I'm pretty angrevated because I've been waiting for months. I've switched to the Apple camp and so far I'm pretty much just waiting. Hopefully i can order it tomorrow.

Well "Multimedia" is only counting down on a hunch.. There isn't and hasn't been any trace of a release date. Everyone's just crossing there fingers and hoping for the best [no pun intended];)

Yes now may be.. prefect timing, for you & I and everyone else with eager tasks to set the Octobot on, but in the end it's obviously Apples decision on timing that will decide when they will roll it out. Tomorrow, in a week, a month, MWSF:(

Patience my Octo-buddy..

May have to wait till next year

Sorry to disappoint some of the folks who have been holding their breath waiting for an 8-core Mac Pro ...

According to the article on TechReport, only the low end Clovertowns with 1066MHz FSB are being produced this year.

Clock speed L2 cache Front-side bus TDP Price
Xeon E5310 1.60GHz 8MB 1066MHz 80W $455
Xeon E5320 1.86GHz 8MB 1066MHz 80W $690
Xeon E5345 2.33GHz 8MB 1333MHz 80W $851
Xeon E5355 2.66GHz 8MB 1333MHz 120W $1172

"Only two of the Xeon 5300 series processors Intel is introducing today are equipped to take advantage of a 1,333MHz front-side bus. The rest are stuck at 1,066MHz, and it's those products that are ramping first. 1,333MHz parts are due to ramp early next year for OEMs ...."

Likely Mac pro 8-core configuration

Clock speed L2 cache Front-side bus TDP Price
Xeon E5310 1.60GHz 8MB 1066MHz 80W $455
Xeon E5320 1.86GHz 8MB 1066MHz 80W $690
Xeon E5345 2.33GHz 8MB 1333MHz 80W $851
Xeon X5355 2.66GHz 8MB 1333MHz 120W $1172

Apple will probably not bother with the 1066 parts, and the 120W 2.66 part may be out of range with respect to the design parameters of the Mac Pro passive CPU cooling. So we are likely to see only the 2.33 part being used.

2x2.0 Woodcrest, 2GB, 250 GB, .... $2499 - $299
2x2.66 Woodcrest, 2GB, 250 GB, .... $2499
2x3.0 Woodcrest 2GB, 250 GB, .... $2499 + $799
2x2.33 Clovertown 2GB, 500 GB (maybe), .... $2499 + $799

It will most likely be announced at MW'07.

Thank you for finding that Everyone MUST READ Tech Report. This clears up a lot why Apple would want to wait until next year. I would much rather have an 8-core Mac Pro based on the Stoakley platform than on the current Bensley. I was unaware of most of what is in this article until now. With Stoakley right around the bend, Apple is likely waiting for all its parts to become available before unleashing a truely much more robust 8-core offering as late as next Spring. Artile is not clear exactly when all the Stoakley parts will be shipping in quantity. But I doubt we'll see the Dual Clovertown at MacWorld Expo. Reads like later towards the end of Winter like March maybe.

So I guess we may as well wait for it to ship with Leopard in that case. It may even be a Leopard required system. I won't be making any more rash predicitons of when, that's for sure. My enthusiasm and excitement way exceeds my understanding of all the factors going into when. For that I apologize.

Thank you for these details. I agree with you. Looks like we were sort of misled by the rumor that Clovertown would ship this month without the detail that it would be only the slower ones first.

I imagine not many of you thought I was right anyway. Trying to keep this small thread alive with posts of hope as fact is not the best way for me to further my credibility is it? :D :( Thanks for your kindness anyway. I am feeling pretty foolish right now after reading that Tech Report. I was really missing most of the information about what will make the 8-core Mac Pro happen.

I was actually hoping you were right. Meh. At least when they are unleashed there will be no question about a better video card inside them. Dare I dream of an 8800 option? No, better not.

each makes his/her own decisions

Let's not get all third-person with "we should all wait..." etc.

As always, each of us should get what he or she needs when each of us needs it, making an informed consumer decision based on usage, workflow, available product and, yes, rumors and tidbits of what is coming down the pike.

I didn't get the G5 Quad because I knew the MacPros were coming, but I could no longer wait beyond that. My quad xeon has been serving me well so far and will continue to do so until I get my next machine.

For those who do NOT need to update now, by all means wait for the next, latest, greatest, next machine. I'm sure it'll be great.

If you need more horses now, though, buy accordingly.

This holds for all equipment, by the way.

One of the corollaries, of course, being to sell your old stuff before the prices tank...it's a delicate dance we do here...

Clovertowns in XServe

The 1066MHz FSB Clovertowns should be ideal for the XServe. Apple should make that option available as soon as Intel can provide these in volume.
