You only have 14 days to be able to return a newly purchased Mac after which you are stuck with it.14 day policy? Could you elaborate on this please? I may have been sleeping through part of all the fine print...![]()
I'm a moderate macmini user, soon-to-be heavey mac pro user. I'm moving to a mac pro and wondering if the Clovertown setup is right for me. My new machine will be used primarily for recording music. To start I will be using Cubase 3 SX. I know the current program will probably not completely utilize the 8 core structure, but I really don't want to waste money on a machine (quad) when a newer machine could potentially be more effecient. Any advice?
That's what I'm hoping for. What I was wondering though - will the MacPro without the 8 cores get a price reduction?
Not really bothered about the extra cores - looks like thats going to way beyond anything I'm going to do with it.

Not likely. But the 8-core will cost a lot more. Not really bothered about the extra cores - looks like thats going to way beyond anything I'm going to do with it.

And you are not asking the publisher of Cubase because?I'm a moderate macmini user, soon-to-be heavey mac pro user. I'm moving to a mac pro and wondering if the Clovertown setup is right for me. And you are not on the phone and email to Digidesign because?I'm working on the same issue, but for Pro Tools. I believe the extra processing power will be extremely beneficial to CPU hog plug-ins like convolution reverbs, and such. Based on the same concept as the Waves APA external processors, I believe the additional cores will prove effective in handling additional processing. My only concern is if the application(s) will work with the new hardware or if I'll have to wait months for Digidesign to do the usual updating process.
What a bummer. You have my sympathies. These secret update policies are really absurd. I would at least expect them to know if their code will work or not and tell you one way or the other. Really disrespectful of their customers to not at the very least to tell you they don't know.Yeah, if only it were so easy. Digidesign keeps their update regiment as secret as Apple and a lot slower; normally they don't even think about making upgrades until a month after the release of a major update (hardware or operating system). Actually, I sent the support team an email almost a week ago on the subject, and don't expect to hear back anytime soon. EDIT: Just for reference, the support page reads: "Core 2 Duo qualification is still in progress" and HOW long ago was this chip announced?
P.S. I think you're even more of a gear junkie then I am!
And you are not asking the publisher of Cubase because? And you are not on the phone and email to Digidesign because?
It would be much more helpful if you would both ask the publishers and then post whatever they tell you here please.
Biggest worry is what may not run at all with 8-cores due to poor software authoring. Hosing an 8-Core Mac Pro is not going to be the "chore" some of you imagine. If the software is properly written, hosing these MPs is going to be a breeze.
Only 5 Days Til 8-Core Mac Pro Orders Start Being Taken
8-Core Mac Pro Will Not Discontinue Any Of Current Offerings. So you shouldn't have expcted your order to be affected by this upcoming addition to this class of Mac. You can NOT OPEN IT though and return it AT APPLE's EXPENSE for up to 14 days and order the 8-core instead.I ordered a quad xeon late last night (Friday) thinking I could cancel the order if any announcements were made this coming Tuesday or Wednesday. The order said it would ship Wednesday or Thursday because of CTO. Lo and behold, I just got shipment notification, the next day, late at night.![]()
Sorry. You're right. I overlooked the CTO in your post that it was a custom order. I was thinking it was a stock order. Bummer. Maybe it won't happen next week. Hope so though.Actually, CTO's can not be returned, period.
"Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:
1. Product that is custom configured to your specifications..."
I'm OK with that as I will be happy with this puter. I may have missed a big price drop, though. I doubt if I could afford an eight core, but the fours should come down in price (or at least offer more RAM for the same price) when the octos are announced.

That's what I'm waiting (hoping) for!
Why would you cringe? Dell is a better monitor than Apple.
How do you have 2GB of RAM inside a computer which can only take 3 x 512 sticks? I can't believe you skipped the G5 PowerMac.Hello All!
I am a long-time reader first-time poster....
I work professionally as an Editor and Motionographer and use programs such as AE, FCP, PS and others constantly. At home I am currently running a G4 single 450mhz with 2GB RAM with 10.3.9, which is unbearably slow and makes it hard for me to get any work done. I am about to finally upgrade to the MAC PRO, but am waiting for the 8-core version (possibly even waiting til after MACWORLD SF 2007 to see if anything changes.)
I have two questions.
First, should I pick it up when it is released this month or wait until mid-January?
And Second, based on the dual 24" Dell vs. dual 23" ACD discussion where you have said...
Is the Dell HD? My understanding is that ACD is HD... but how does this affect my use as a comp monitor anyway? Isn't the resolution of the screens as high or higer than HD anyway?
Thanks for any info!!!

Yes buy tomorrow with me.
Of course the DELL is HD. The DELL resolution is same as Apple resolution 1920 x 1200 - only 2/3 the money.
Only 1 More Day 'Til We Can Order Our 8-Core Mac Pro.
In a box? It never occurred to me they would offer a base Dual Clovertown Mac Pro ready for pickup in stores. I had been thinking we would all have to special order them.Just got back from the apple store, and the genius at the genius bar gave me a certain smirk and a smile when I asked him about the octo core mac pro's. Everyone i've ever talked to just give me the old dumb nod when asked, but when I mentioned wanting to buy an octo core mac pro on wednesday, he replied with a wink and said "u know as much as me...." I have a feeling they are already in the back or something... Just a feeling
No. Lower powered ones run slower so forget that discussion.Multimedia, upon closer inspection I see that I am actually running only 768MB of RAM in this bad boy.... It's honestly been so long I guess I had just wished there to be more![]()
Oh and it is of the DUAL 450 PPC variety so that must be why it can still run FCP at all!
I really need to upgrade as I am continually moving toward doing more and more client work out of my own studio. It is just hard because I can only do this purchase once and I have heard so much discussion about power comsumption and FSB issues and the like.... I just need a monster machine that can run all of todays leading graphics and editing software and continue to support my growth toward tomorrow as I move more into 3D animation and full HD support.
What is the cost and enviromental differences between the power-hungry first gen 8-core and the one slated to follow... should I even be concerned about this stuff?
How can you be a "professional" and not have your Mac Full of RAM to the MAX with the latest operating system and not even know which model it is and how much ram you really have in it - imagining it has 2GB when it has 768MB?!?!?
Is this some kind of joke post?![]()

hopefully they'll have better selections with the video cards...
