I'm a moderate macmini user, soon-to-be heavey mac pro user. I'm moving to a mac pro and wondering if the Clovertown setup is right for me. My new machine will be used primarily for recording music. To start I will be using Cubase 3 SX. I know the current program will probably not completely utilize the 8 core structure, but I really don't want to waste money on a machine (quad) when a newer machine could potentially be more effecient. Any advice?

I'm working on the same issue, but for Pro Tools. I believe the extra processing power will be extremely beneficial to CPU hog plug-ins like convolution reverbs, and such. Based on the same concept as the Waves APA external processors, I believe the additional cores will prove effective in handling additional processing. My only concern is if the application(s) will work with the new hardware or if I'll have to wait months for Digidesign to do the usual updating process.

Not really bothered about the extra cores - looks like thats going to way beyond anything I'm going to do with it.

What I was wondering though - will the MacPro without the 8 cores get a price reduction?

It would be very, very unlikely and I wouldn't be basing any decisions on such a thing. It might be a very long while before they do come down in price.

Price Reduction Unlikely • 8-Core Will Cost Much More • Plan On More Than $4,000

Not likely. But the 8-core will cost a lot more. :p In fact we get the priviledge of paying the most for them by being the first 8-Core Dual Clovertown Mac Pro customers in the history of the world. :D It's not a burden, it's an honor to be allowed to own them. :) nk

With an appropriate amount of RAM - at least 6GB - for so many cores, it will set you back more than $4k. I have that saved and ready to pull the trigger when released. I'm hoping for a two 1GB stick base.

Just checked Apple store and they have rewritten their RAM options - You can't buy TWO 2GB sticks from Apple any more. But you can buy 4 for $2700 or Four 1GB sticks for $1100 way over market price of $665 at 18004MEMORY.com via this Ramseeker.com link per 2x2GB Kit or $1330 for 8GB in four 2GB sticks.

Over Secretive Software Publishers Make Hardware Buying Decisions More Difficult

And you are not asking the publisher of Cubase because?

It would be much more helpful if you would both ask the publishers and then post whatever they tell you here please.

Biggest worry is what may not run at all with 8-cores due to poor software authoring where the program doesn't know what to "think" of 8 cores and quits as it launches.

Yeah, if only it were so easy. Digidesign keeps their update regiment as secret as Apple and a lot slower; normally they don't even think about making upgrades until a month after the release of a major update (hardware or operating system). Actually, I sent the support team an email almost a week ago on the subject, and don't expect to hear back anytime soon. EDIT: Just for reference, the support page reads: "Core 2 Duo qualification is still in progress" and HOW long ago was this chip announced?

P.S. I think you're even more of a gear junkie then I am!
What a bummer. You have my sympathies. These secret update policies are really absurd. I would at least expect them to know if their code will work or not and tell you one way or the other. Really disrespectful of their customers to not at the very least to tell you they don't know.

I've postponed doing my Final Cut Studio Crossgrade until the last couple of weeks before it expires in hopes an 8-Core update will be included in the install DVDs I get at the end of the offer period December 20.

Monday Veterans' Day Will Likely Delay 8-Core Announcement 'Til Wednesday November 15.

Meanwhile Apple is way delayed in shipping their 17" MacBook Pro until the end of November.

Saturday Night Shipment Notification

I ordered a quad xeon late last night (Friday) thinking I could cancel the order if any announcements were made this coming Tuesday or Wednesday. The order said it would ship Wednesday or Thursday because of CTO. Lo and behold, I just got shipment notification, the next day, late at night.

8-Core Mac Pro Will Not Discontinue Any Of Current Offerings. So you shouldn't have expcted your order to be affected by this upcoming addition to this class of Mac. You can NOT OPEN IT though and return it AT APPLE's EXPENSE for up to 14 days and order the 8-core instead.

It's not unusual for Apple to notify you an order will ship in a month only for it to ship the next day. It's happened to me more than once. Their shipping date estimates are very conservative.
Actually, CTO's can not be returned, period.
"Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:

1. Product that is custom configured to your specifications..."

I'm OK with that as I will be happy with this puter. I may have missed a big price drop, though. I doubt if I could afford an eight core, but the fours should come down in price (or at least offer more RAM for the same price) when the octos are announced.
Sorry. You're right. I overlooked the CTO in your post that it was a custom order. I was thinking it was a stock order. Bummer. Maybe it won't happen next week. Hope so though.

Yeah I'm hoping for two 1GB sticks as the new base since the're doing that with the MacBook Pros now.

A couple answers please.....

Hello All!

I am a long-time reader first-time poster....

I work professionally as an Editor and Motionographer and use programs such as AE, FCP, PS and others constantly. At home I am currently running a G4 single 450mhz with 2GB RAM with 10.3.9, which is unbearably slow and makes it hard for me to get any work done. I am about to finally upgrade to the MAC PRO, but am waiting for the 8-core version (possibly even waiting til after MACWORLD SF 2007 to see if anything changes.)

I have two questions.

First, should I pick it up when it is released this month or wait until mid-January?

And Second, based on the dual 24" Dell vs. dual 23" ACD discussion where you have said...

Why would you cringe? Dell is a better monitor than Apple.

Is the Dell HD? My understanding is that ACD is HD... but how does this affect my use as a comp monitor anyway? Isn't the resolution of the screens as high or higer than HD anyway?

Thanks for any info!!!

How do you have 2GB of RAM inside a computer which can only take 3 x 512 sticks? I can't believe you skipped the G5 PowerMac.

Yes buy tomorrow with me. :)

Of course the DELL is HD. The DELL resolution is same as Apple resolution 1920 x 1200 - only 2/3 the money.

Just got back from the apple store, and the genius at the genius bar gave me a certain smirk and a smile when I asked him about the octo core mac pro's. Everyone i've ever talked to just give me the old dumb nod when asked, but when I mentioned wanting to buy an octo core mac pro on wednesday, he replied with a wink and said "u know as much as me...." I have a feeling they are already in the back or something... Just a feeling

Multimedia, upon closer inspection I see that I am actually running only 768MB of RAM in this bad boy.... It's honestly been so long I guess I had just wished there to be more ;)

Oh and it is of the DUAL 450 PPC variety so that must be why it can still run FCP at all!

I really need to upgrade as I am continually moving toward doing more and more client work out of my own studio. It is just hard because I can only do this purchase once and I have heard so much discussion about power comsumption and FSB issues and the like.... I just need a monster machine that can run all of todays leading graphics and editing software and continue to support my growth toward tomorrow as I move more into 3D animation and full HD support.

What is the cost and enviromental differences between the power-hungry first gen 8-core and the one slated to follow... should I even be concerned about this stuff?

Thanks.

In a box? It never occurred to me they would offer a base Dual Clovertown Mac Pro ready for pickup in stores. I had been thinking we would all have to special order them.

No. Lower powered ones run slower so forget that discussion.

So you have been crippling yourself by not maxing out the RAM years ago. That is a six year old Mac born in July 2000 and died January 2001. You would realize substantial increase in performance by putting in three 512MB sticks and installing Tiger. You realize it runs much slower with only 768MB of RAM right? That is a cripplingly small amount of RAM not just small.

CRIPPLINGLY LITTLE I.E. You have been trying to do professional work on an antique Mac with less RAM than it's maximum small allowed amount on an obsolete operating system version for how many unnecessary hours due to not updating it?

It cost $168.75 to fully populate that G4 to a much faster 1.5GB of RAM. Do you need me to send you the money?

How can you be a "professional" and not have your Mac Full of RAM to the MAX with the latest operating system and not even know which model it is and how much ram you really have in it - imagining it has 2GB when it has 768MB?!?!?

Is this some kind of joke post?

No Joke

Ouch... that hurts. This is no joke. I have been doing 90% of my work on-site at more up to date facilities. Over the past four or so years it has only been spill over projects and such that I'd have to do at home. I agree that it is cripplingly slow... I can't run Apple's Motion at home nor could I even upgrade to 10.4 for some reason. The installer said it wouldn't work, maybe cause of the RAM. I tried though. Before moving to the mac I had been running dual processor PC workstations from HP for years. Those seem ridiculously inhibiting now as well... I will do this system right though...

DUAL 8-core 2.6?
At least 6GB RAM to start
3 TB storage
ATI x1900 ? (other suggestions?)
Dual Dell 24"

Any suggestions?

I guess the only thing now is to drop the cash and pick-up Octamac! :D

PEACE
