very disappointed...

I personally barely see this as an upgrade, and I don't think it should satisfy the professional market as the update the Mac Pro needed.
I know the pros don't normally care about price, but since the last update; memory prices have dropped significantly, meaning Apple's bearably high markups on their RAM are getting a little out of control. Secondly, the graphics cards are in need of an upgrade.
So it's a mix of things, both price and their continued use of older components, but this was about as groundbreaking as introducing an orange nano, its not anything new.

Were tests on new CS3 on 8 Core Intel Mac Pro... haven't read it yet.

Ah.. my bad. Tests were with CS2, which explains the slothlike performance. I'd have expected these machines are launching now, just after CS3, so they could show off their superb native performance in Photoshop. Odd.

Price drop

According to hardware.no, on 22. April Intel will lower the prices on their quad-core processors with up to 40% and a 20-40% price drop on Core2Duo. Maybe this is kind of a pre-release just to show everyone that they know how to do it...? I dunno...

Just noticed on the performance page:

For most tests they test vs a Quad 2.5GHz G5. But for Photoshop they test via a Dual 2.3 GHz G5, and even a Dual 1.25GHz G4. It looks like they 'tilted' the benchmarks by choosing slower machines for comparison - it certainly looks like a Quad 2.5GHz G5 would outperform these machines in Photoshop based on these tests.

No they don't. At least I can't see it. And it should be noted that those benchmarks are still CS2-benchmarks.

EDIT: Oh they do have a G4-test in there. My mistake

I think the memory price has dropped too. IIRC, 4 Gigs or Ram used to sell for $1099 and now it's at $699. Can anyone confirm this?

I just noticed that now it supports up to 3TB internal storage, is that how it always was? I thought it was only capable of 2 before? Maybe I just missed that. A shame they didn't drop the other prices.

it's always been 3TB, 4 bays 750GB Drives

Tough price.

I was wondering how power the new Macs consume. I checked my MacPro 2,66 GHz today out of curiosity.

I got

idle 192 Watt and
load 250 Watt.

I bet the new will add some more Watt to that.

PCI:

300W combined maximum for all PCI Express slots.

Also Maya 8.5 on a MP-Octo is 2.6x as fast as a PMG5Q.

Price?

Here's a $6600 configuration.

Cinema Displays

Glad to see the prices lowered on the Cinema Displays. I've been holding off on purchasing a 30-inch to replace my 23-inch.

Looks mighty speedy!

I maxed an 8 core Mac Pro out with all the best features, and the total came to $15,000! It would be one blazingly fast, storage rich computer though.

wow the quad core almost cost as much as when i bought my powermac dual core g4...if i had a need for it, i would get it. hahah just for the hell of saying "that's quad core man" ... but i guess u dont really need it for surfing the web and a tv tuner, ah?

Just noticed something a bit strange. The Pro is shipping in 3-5 days with 3Ghz quad chips, whihc according to intel at least, don't exist. (2.66Ghz max)

Maybe this indicates S-S architecture on the mother (sorry..Logic) board.

The truth is if you don't do heavy graphics or gaming, your old G4 single would be just fine. I do video editing for a living and I just upgraded from my dual G4 to the low end quad intel (not ocho).

People are complaining about cost. When I bought the dual G4 1ghz, it was close to 3 grand!

I work in a media lab and my coworker does video editting using a quad G5 with 8 GB ram (I think, but I could be wrong). I don't know the scale of video work you do, but a dual G4 would certainly not be enough to handle what we have to handle.

Cost is not so much an issue here, since the capabilities are there. Lots of people in this office have 30" ACD's (some dual). But we've got to wait for CS3 before moving to Intel...

Congrats to all those who waited.

Just configured one: 3.0 Octo, 8GB RAM, BT+AE and X1900 XT. Its $6000+ . the octo cores cost $1400+. Thats alot of money BUT this would cut through Leopard, CS3 and some games like hot knife through butter (scroll like butter)

Wonder why they aren't offering the Nvidia 8xxx series or ATI Rxxx series

I've been waiting for this for a LOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME! Should I click "Order"? That is a LOT of dough!

Well, I opted out of going the 24" iMac route (wouldn't have been enough power for me) and decided to wait for the 8-core monster with 4GB RAM... Glad I waited :)

I just hope my logitech quickcam works with iChat, since the only thing I would have gotten with the iMac would have been an iSight, and they aren't available anymore :( Mind you, in comparison to the cost of this beast... I'm sure I could find a compatible webcam for peanuts :p

How the hell are the prices in GBP and USD exactly the same now? So they're just over £300 in America, but if we live in the UK we've got to shell out £600 (roughly $1000)? That's bull.

nice... <drool>

Too bad its so much $$$$

Maybe now they could lower the lower end mac pro price???? pretty please? I would like one honestly, just lower the cost a little and I'll order:D
