Hi all,
i can confirm the MBP late 2008 running 8gb RAM under 64bit kernel without any problems. If interested, i will post screens showing usage of 7+ gb RAM on my current MBP.

Cheers

That's good news, if true. OWC claims they have tested it and although it runs on 8GB, there is a major slowdown once more than 6GB are accessed.

Is your machine running "normal" after accessing more than 6GB?

If you could post screen shots that would be great - unless, of course, you have the 2.66 or 2.93GHz versions of the 5,1 MBP. According to OWC, those run with 8GB without a hitch.

Here you go... first boot with 8gb felt little slow, dunno why, but in the end i tried to adress as much memory as possible, using PS, iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto, until iStatMenus said 7gb were adressed...

i have aligned 3gig to my VM running windows 7 on a USB disk and both OS work explicitly fine... have not compared it to 6gb though.

for switching kernel mode i used the 32- or 64-bit kernel mode selector tool

edit: only things that's slow is citrix within windows, but thats a server prob ;-)

Can you please confirm that you can just put 8gb of RAM in the old UMB? I have the 2.4ghz and wish to either have 6 or 8gb, but worried I need to buy the MBP that replaced it?

If it can take it, do I need to get a firmware update or anything too? Thanks!

as i said, i switched to kernel mode 64bit and yes, just put the 8gb in, no firmware updates etc.

here in europe i paid about 300€ for 8gb which equals to about $450 for 8gb in total...

The question being how does this compare to the unibody macbook NON pros.

I have also read somewhere while searching for info on this issue that one of the reasons that OWC ram doesnt work is because OWC lacks some memory management or something similar.

If someone has got 8GB of "apple genuine" ram (or if you have got other brands to work please let us know the brand and specs so we can replicate them) and can test in a late 2008 unibody macbook 13" it would be greatly appreciated.

I have tested kingston, OWC and PQI ram. ALL of which booted with 4gb and then crashed within 2 hours. 8gb was a no go either way.
Even the apple reseller tried to tell me that it was my fault for installing the ram wrong when i took it back. I got them to test it themselves and sure enough they refunded the money within 2 hours of testing. :)

If this is just a firmware issue cant someone look at maybe hacking the newer 13" MBP firmware to work on the older unibody??

BTW i know this was an old thread but its something that i have been following for a long time and wanted to know if anyone has had any luck recently.

My Mac guy put a 4 gig hynix stick in my mini. Can't afford the other stick now. Working fine with original one gig plus four.

Yea I have the 1st Unibody aluminum macbook (not pro) and was wondering if I can use 8gb ram as well. Currently topped off at 4gb now.

Is it ok to mix the ram?
I am planning on getting a 4gb stick and replacing one of my 1gb stick with a 4gb. I plan to replace the other 4gb sometime later hopefully when the prices go down a little or there is a sale somewhere.

Thorsin,

Have you had any problems running the 8GBs in the Macbook yet? Also, to be clear, do you have a Macbook unibody or a Macbook pro?

Thanks

The only downside to using non-matched pairs (ie 2x1gb 2x2gb etc) is you lose dual channel speed, but most benchmarks show that more ram is always better than dual channel.

I've been running 8GB in my Aluminum Unibody MB for a few weeks now. No issues at all.

Like Thorsin, I saw a slightly slower boot time. But, I can run a Windows 7 VM with 3GB of RAM and my MB doesn't even touch the swap space. It's been great!

I'm actually using Lenovo memory. It wasn't Mac-certified, but it has been perfect.

ahh i see
i guess ill go ahead and order the 4gb ram

Apple sells 8 GiB kits for the March 2009 unibodies, not the previous ones.

They are not all the same.

Which model of unibody macbook pro do you have ? late 2008 2.4 ghz or higher ?

Which model of unibody macbook pro do you have ? late 2008 2.4 ghz or higher ?

According to appleserialnumberinfo.com:

Model: - MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) (CTO)
Codename: - "M97"
Build Country: - Your Mac was built in Changhai, China.
Build Year: - Your Mac was built in 2009.
Build Week - Your Mac was built in week 2 of that year (January).
Production Nr.: - Your Mac was number 1098 to be built that week.
Processor speed: - 2.4 GHz

It's a MacBook, not a MacBook Pro...

8Gb in Unibody MacBooks Works

I installed 8GB of Crucial Memory Part CT2KIT51264BC1067 into my unibody MacBook (not Pro)

I'm running Snow Leopard in 32bit mode and all is working fine, speed is good.

I've tested running VirtualBox and VMFusion.

Details of my system shown below.
Model: - MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
Codename: - "M97"
Build Country: - Your Mac was built in Changhai, China.
Build Year: - Your Mac was built in 2008.
Build Week - Your Mac was built in week 44 of that year (October).
Production Nr.: - Your Mac was number 1109 to be built that week.

So now that some time has passed...

So now that it is mid 2010 and SL has been out and new EFI's are out, is this issue up for rehashing? Is it still considered a firmware limitation for the late 2008 uniMBP's to successfully run 8gb of ram?

I hesitate to ask the proverbial question of whether or not my late 2008 MBP is capable of fully running 8gb because the general consensus is 6gb (unsupported). I've seen a lot of tests on here with models that aren't specific to my own.

I have a:
Model: - MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
Codename: - "M98"

Build Country: - Your Mac was built in Changhai, China.

Build Year: - Your Mac was built in 2008.

Build Week - Your Mac was built in week 44 of that year (October).

Production Nr.: - Your Mac was number 1795 to be built that week.

Installed RAM: - 4 GB (2x2)
Amount of Slots: - 2
RAM Speed: - 1067 MHz
RAM Type: - PC3-8500, DDR3, SO-DIMM

Processor speed: - 2.53 GHz
Processor Type: - Intel Core 2 Duo (Penryn)
Number of Cores: - 2
Bus Speed: - 1067 MHz
Cache: - 6 MB L2 cache
64-bit Support: - Yes

Any help is appreciated, I'm learning a lot from reading these forums. I'm honestly trying to do this and will post my results once I know what I should be getting.

8GB RAM Does Work In Late 2008 MacBook Pro

Hey,

I have a Late 2008 2.53GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro. The first unibody with the removal battery which Apple states has a maximum RAM config of 4GB. I have successfully installed and tested this and can confirm it works fine.

6.51GB is currently in use and the system is stable and responsive. I'm using Hynix 2 X 4GB DDR3 SODIMM PC3 8500 memory which I got of eBay for £175. I actually thought I bought 1066MHz RAM (that's what it said in the listing) but the system is seeing it as 1333MHz

By the I'm running OSX 10.6.3 in 64-bit mode. I haven't tried 32-bit.

People with Non Pro Unibody Macbook Aluminum (Late 2008) can post screenshots of System Profiler where we can see MacBook5,1 and 8Gb of RAM? I'll really appreciate this.

Thanks!
