Suckfest was telling you it was doing it multiple times a minute, you just kept saying it was normal!

My bad if I misunderstood it. I thought he was just saying that it makes that noise multiple times when he kept the device charging.

i's wait for the apple made AirPower or for apple's inevitable Made for i certification of wireless chargers.
using the common standard Qi is not the problem.
the charger and the phone need to communicate about charge level and other information that is constantly passed back and forth.

If it’s doing that 20 times every minute then that’s wrong for sure.

Ps. Stop generalising people and calling them apologists the minute they disagree with you. Very immature behaviour.
Even if it does it once a night, it’s “wrong for sure.”

Ps. Stop apologizing for obvious defects if you don’t want to be labeled an apologist. There’s a difference between disagreement and whatever it is you thought you were doing by just going “nuh-uh, turning the screen on several times a minute is intentional.” Very apologetic behaviour.

Normally I’d agree to disagree, but I simply can’t let you waltz in and pass around wildly incorrect information that might confuse people passing by.

Why’s it wrong if it does it once a night?! It’s a known fact that devices stop charging when it reaches 100% & then starts to charge again when it’s plugged in but the charge drops below 100%.

I only said it’s expected behaviour because I thought you mentioned it as happening multiple times but didn’t realise it was happening constantly as much as 20 times within a minute. That’s misunderstanding on my part & I’ve already agreed with you on that being incorrect behaviour.

It was a misunderstanding rather than me trying to pass around incorrect information. Look at my responses throughout the forum, I don’t just pass on incorrect information.

Given this, the bug is that when wireless charging it produces the charge complete ding over and over with each cycle. It should behave exactly like when charging via cable, i.e. silent

I have this Anker for overnight charging and my phone does not do this through the night. It only *dings* when I first set it on the charger.

It sounds like the charger you have powers itself down (or something) when the phone reaches 100% and then it checks the charge through out the night and turns back on when it's below 100%. Something something science and tech explanations.

This is exactly it. And thats why its normal behavior. If the charger powers itself off when the phone stops drawing current, its going to ding again once the phone needs current to recharge up to 100%. The only reason why wired connections don't ding is because it always maintains an active connection (but stops charging). What the OP is experiencing is normal, what @Suckfest 9001 is experiencing is not. That could be a defective phone.

Really good explanation there. That might just be it.

What if you turn on Do Not Disturb? Does the screen still turn on and do you still hear a ding? That would make wireless charging unusable for me.

So far, this is only based on the wireless charging pad the OP is using. I have zero issues with my cheap Aukey one. And there are others that have Anker that have not experienced this as well. It really seems to stem from the pad turning itself off.

I mentioned it on the first page but it got looked over lol. So I figured once someone else would mention it, I would try again.

Yes, it turns the screen on and dings even with Do Not Disturb turned on. This is not "normal behavior"

The charging cycle should be starting and stopping without making the phone UI act like it was unplugged and plugged back in.

It's not a defective phone - we've tried a couple of different 8 Plus devices here. The culprit is likely the charger being overly aggressive on cutting off power to the phone, instead of letting the phone handle it.

Its a defective OS. The chargers are as dumb as rocks and have nothing to do with it.

One other thing is that if the charger is plugged into a normal 5w wall plug, they can cycle rapidly on and off as they try, and fail, to charge the phone.

I'm 99% sure it's the charger logic being weird and overly aggressive, but I don't know why we didn't witness this behavior with the third party Qi cases for the older iPhones, or with other phones in general. It could be that iOS demands a certain minimum charge in order to display "charging," whereas other phones don't? But that still doesn't explain why the Qi cases worked all along.

i am confusion

I have this dock. Never once have I heard it ding because it reached full charge (tbh, in all my time of owning a mobile phone, I don't think I've EVER heard a completion ding...). It dings once when it goes on the dock, then I don't hear a peep out of it until 7:30am when I wake up and the phone is at 100%.

Glad to hear it - the one I ordered is very similar to this.

This is the one I just ordered:

We'll see!

Well I had the Belkin I bought yesterday at the Apple Store charging my 8+ all night and only heard the bong when I initially placed it on the pad. Not a peep all night and the phone was very cool when I took it off the pad in the morning fully charged. Very happy so far with how the Belkin functions.

I have a few problems with the Belkin one.

1. It lays flat. I definitely prefer it when my phone is propped up.
2. The cost! £55! My off brand was £17 and works perfectly.
3. It's white. I can't stand white stuff.

I also bought this TYLT VU charger for the work desk and my iPhone is charging/dinging as expected - meaning it only dings when you place it on the charger. I've tested it this morning to make sure.

I've experienced the behaviour described by the OP, but just once and in a particular set of circumstances. My new iPhone 8 had been wired-charging from a wall outlet for several hours when I placed it straight from the wall charger onto the Mophie pad (the one sold at Apple stores). The pad stopped charging and the light went off almost straight away. Less than a minute later, the ding sounded and the phone started charging again. (I had placed the phone very carefully and centrally on the pad.) This behaviour continued every few minutes.

However, this happened only once, so I have to surmise that it was due to the battery being at 100% (or very close to it) when first placed on the Mophie. I may try to replicate.

So I received the one I ordered earlier today and put the phone on fully charged for at least half an hour. No dings so far. Woop!

my 8 plus kept 'ding' ing when wirelessly charging, it ding the most when in the 70 % range. 2-3 dings every 5 mins, its driving me crazy. anyone been to the genius bar yet? im going to one this weekend. cant stand this anymore

Bah crap spoke too soon. Woke me up with dings overnight. Goddamn it.

Guess I have to buy the 70 dollar Belkin one... should have known that Apple would figure out a way to make you spend money on their hosted crap.

No way? That sucks, man. Wonder why mine is different. Can you record your phone having it’s little ding tantrum and send it to Apple/the dock manufacturers?
