So, as I read this, wait for the 18 because it will basically be the 17 with maybe a couple of small performance increases along with a camera that is 'simplified' but I thought was going to have an adjustable aperture, but is now going to have simpler controls which will be billed as an amazing improvement. For nearly $1800 for the 1TB with tax, I am really getting excited!

I actually feel like this is the first year in a LONG TIME where buying a new iPhone makes more sense than ever. Especially for the Pros. All of these rumored upgrades for next year are insignificant at best. Apple clearly put the majority of their eggs in this year's lineup and likely won't again until 2027 for the 20th anniversary. If anything, next year is the year to skip.

Yeah keeping my 15 Pro and skipping the 17 Pro this year. Hopefully the 18 Pro will improve a bit aesthetically, more colours and Polished Aluminium maybe Apple?.

Or just buy a lightly preowned 17 Pro next year, from someone who inexplicably gets a new iPhone every year.

I have a friend who does this and I don't understand the appeal at all. I get very used to my devices and really enjoy keeping them for a good long run.

I waited long enough. As much as I loved my 14Pro, it was getting long in the tooth. No AI and the battery drain was getting worse. I was not going to wait another year. No I don't love the looks of the 17Pro or any of the colors and why I'm using a black case to fully cover the phone and also chose the deep blue color. I have always used clear cases to fully show off the iPhone's beauty. Not this time. I do believe the 18Pro will have decent upgrades but will remain very close in resemblance to the 17Pro. Although I do think they will include a black/space black/space gray next time. As much as I don't love the 17Pro's looks I do love the upgrades from the 14Pro. The phone is much faster, more fluid, has more space, more ram, better battery, and over all a better phone.

I know people who buy a new phone every year. The same people who get a new car every year. Who are we to say you’re buying it wrong?

In my book the 14Pro is a much better phone. No action button, no camera button, no AI, less hideous bump, titanium frame and better size but YMMV.

I'm saying I don't get the appeal and prefer to keep my devices for longer, and I suggest taking advantage of the deals afforded by those who do want a new phone every year.

But Apple should reduce function of the Camera Control button. They should rename the button, whereby it’s marketed and used exclusively for snapping photos and initiating videos as fast as possible. My preferred name is QuickSnap, but reduced function is the take-home here. Bonus points for adding a preview-mode so the user can preview the camera lens with a half-press from anywhere in the OS or within any app, and exit just as easily. This should be the fancy feature.

Trying to recreate all of the onscreen controls of the Camera app in this button is needlessly complex and from a product perspective, misguided—quickly snapping photos—that’s the feature.

I do the iPhone upgrade program and trade in my iPhone every year, I get a really good deal on cell service so it equals out. This year though, I chose to skip the 17 and I will be able to keep my 16 if I decide to upgrade to the 18.

I'll upgrade when I feel a need to, which isn't now. My iPhone 14 Pro that I've had since launch is still working great, and I just got a new battery in it under AppleCare+ back in April. Once it doesn't do what I need it to do, then I'll upgrade. The only thing I really would like right now is USB-C, but that alone isn't worth an upgrade.

Phones, tablets, computers, CPUs, etc., are constantly evolving, so there is always some reason(s) to wait.

If we continuously wait for the next generation, we would never own these devices.
Lol that's always my argument too! Things will continue to update, so that can't be a reason to wait or you'll never own anything new.

Here is your daily reminder that you DON'T NEED that new phone. I mean you can spend your money however you want but to me personally it is a waste of money annually. I prefer a 3-year upgrade cycle.
At this point, even a 3-year upgrade cycle is kind of pointless for most. I'm still on my 12 Pro and waffling on whether I should get the 17 Pro. I would like the updated camera, but that's honestly the only thing I care about. Battery upgrade would be nice too.

14Pro had a stainless steel frame not titanium. I love the action button on the new phones. I really like the AI and have had it on my iPad pro for a while and used to it. I like the camera control button on the new phone and use it often. The size is negligible and hardly different. The "hideous bump" is covered on my new phone by a nice case. Sounds like you're making excuses to keep your 14Pro and refuse to move forward. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 14Pro and the looks are much better to me than the 17Pro. But... sorry, your phone and book are outdated as was my 14Pro.

I'm still waiting for either a significantly smaller dynamic island or none at all. Can't stand that "feature" on my work phone. My personal is a 13 Pro Max and will take the notch over it all day.

The thing is, Apple can't afford to wait three years; it might face serious financial trouble. In the EU, electronic products are required to function well for at least five years, so perhaps we should reconsider getting caught up in the "new product" hype, which doesn't feel so new anymore.

Meanwhile, Chinese leaker Instant Digital has offered yet another version of events, saying the Dynamic Island will shrink in size, but that under-display Face ID and camera technology won't debut next year. Overall, the consensus suggests Apple may be refining the Dynamic Island before fully transitioning to an all-screen design in future generations.

another useless "feature". call it what it is, a gimmick.

exactly. which is why i'm sticking with my iPhone 12 Pro again.
