Or just buy a lightly preowned 17 Pro next year, from someone who inexplicably gets a new iPhone every year.

I have a friend who does this and I don't understand the appeal at all. I get very used to my devices and really enjoy keeping them for a good long run.
A fresh battery, reset warranty, and upgraded cameras are always worth the yearly upgrade (to me as somebody who doesn’t purchase AppleCare+). Especially since trade-in values of last year’s phones tend to be 50% of their original value, or higher.

I don't judge anyone who likes and bought the new 17 Pro line.
But to me - this is the ugliest phone design Apple has ever created and released.

And the Orange is the worst....

Again - this is about tastes, but it doesn't resonate with me at all....
I won't be upgrading to 18 Pro if it stays like this...
Perfectly Said!

I would like a new Plus model.
But waiting for a new mini is like waiting for a new Plus model.
The ProMotion display is on every model now so what's the point of buying the Pro models?
Some of us want a larger sized iPhone, because some of us have big hands and we're getting older so a larger screen would be better for our aging eyes.
It's doubtful that Apple will bring back either the Mini or Plus models as they were removed because of relatively low demand and sales.
Guess one has to save up for the ProMax model now and pay for the privilege of helping our eyesight.

No one explained any viable reasons to buy a Foldable smartphone. What's the point except to brag about it while paying a High price for it? That's not bragging but stupidity and having too much money and time on your side.
Do people still brag about having a new smartphone today? Do people even sleep outside any Apple store to get the latest models anymore? The rest of us are working hard for our money.

Batteries can be replaced for much cheaper than a new phone. Also what good is the warranty if the phone is working. Typically if a device gets past the warranty period, it's probably going to last years unless you do something to break it. I'd rather keep my device longer and just buy a new one if/when that one fails. If you keep the phone for years, the trade in starts to matter less anyhow. Not sure the actual number, but if it's 50% like you suggest, then that's buying a new phone outright every 2 years without trade-in. I'm at the point now where I'm keeping my phone 5 years, and might be 6 now for my 12 Pro as I'm leaning towards still keeping it another year. That's still cheaper in the long run if you just take care of your device and use it as long as you are able. It's also less wasteful of resources, so better for the environment.

I use my phone for video production, so I want the latest and greatest when it comes to cameras and performance. Apple offered me $700 for my $1199 16 Pro Max, and that $499 felt more than fair to upgrade for me. It's also not like Apple just throws away the devices you trade in to them...

14Pro had a stainless steel frame not titanium. I love the action button on the new phones. I really like the AI and have had it on my iPad pro for a while and used to it. I like the camera control button on the new phone and use it often. The size is negligible and hardly different. The "hideous bump" is covered on my new phone by a nice case. Sounds like you're making excuses to keep your 14Pro and refuse to move forward. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 14Pro and the looks are much better to me than the 17Pro. But... sorry, your phone and book are outdated as was my 14Pro.
Funny you say I'm making excuses when I don't even use an iPhone, guess you are making excuses too to justify supporting Tim's penny pinching?
You are right on the 14's steel frame though.

I can see how more frequent upgrades make sense if you are benefiting from a specific upgrade the phone provides. But I'm mostly referring to the average user. I know apple doesn't just throw away devices that are traded in, but it's more the culture of consumption that is the issue overall. Yes, someone else will buy it and use it. But most people can get by without the frequent upgrades. How much does it really improve things on a year to year basis. Hell, even using for video production like you say, is the 16 Pro really that terrible to keep using when it's been fine for the last year you've had it? Maybe there is something specific that really did make it worth it to do the one year jump this time, but will the iPhone 18 really have another one of those, or is it just the perception that "It's better, so I need it" really the reason behind it. These are the things I try to think through before making a purchase myself.

I've considered starting a youtube channel and the Camera system in the 17 Pro would be a huge upgrade from my 12 Pro legitimately. But I could still get by with the camera's in the 12 Pro just fine despite the large upgrade a 17 Pro would provide. But that is also coming from the standpoint that I don't need ProRes Raw or those features to accomplish what I'd be aiming for. So I do recognize others needs are different and this is just an example.

Its a litmus test. If your the type of person who wants to walk around with an orange iPhone you are also probably the same person who had annoying novelty ringtones on your Motorola Razr in the 2000s.

I agree, it's definitely the ugliest iPhone they've shipped. That combined with no improvements to the main camera and the lack of 2TB for the regular Pro made me ultimately decide to pass and keep my 16 Pro for now.

I thought they were using the 2nm process for next year’s A20 chip? The article lists 2nm process then goes on to say Apple will be using a “3nm process” for the A20. Which is it?
