More evidence that we will be getting the new 3G iPhone shortly here in the USA. I'm hoping for at least 32GB if not 64GB. I use mine a lot for iPod and 8GB is just not enough for me.

New apps coming as well. All is very good in iPhone land and just getting better...

Sunds like the May 12 rumor was correct and that the phones will be available for sale by May 12 and not June.

I do not think Apple will sit tight selling zero phones until June or Sept as some has suggested. Factories for the new model must be cranking them 7/24.

This is likely huge.

64GB!!!!!! 32, seems reasonable, but no way in hell are we gonna see a 64, it just wont fit, and it would be $800-$1000.

This is great news but begs questions. You have to wonder did 02 discount it too steeply? Also were Apple unhappy (as someone else suggested)?

If O2 and Carphone Warehouse have sold out, why not supply more of them from Apple Stores in the UK? If Apple are that desperate to reach this 10 million target, why not?

Who knows whats going on? it's a bit weird.

I've got the feeling that Apple have had a change of mind about the exclusive deals as it's too much hassle?

I think they can make more money by selling more unlocked phones and making money from the appstore?

Maybe they are dropping the 8gig, keeping the 16 on edge and then adding a 16 and 32 3g. That would account for the lack of deals on the 16 when there is a huge change on the horizon.

excellent point, this seems quite likely. so that would make it
16gig Edge 299
16gig 3G 399
32gib 3G 499

?

May 12

There was a rumor about a May 12 release. Anyone has any hints about apple making preparatins for a news announcement?

Introducti0n of a 32 Gig model maybe silent, not worth a news event. But a 3G iPhone is likely deserving of a news event specially if it has iChat video capabilities, GPS and other internal changes.

What about the company that handles their events, any signs?

Well I'm glad a friend bought one for me to keep me going until the 3G's appear. I'll be able to offload it for at least the cost price here in Belgium when the time comes (8GB iPhones sell in shops here for €699 and simillar prices, it's completely nuts...)

pricing

I still say when 3G arrives it will come with a SIGNIFICANT price hike and a significant "rebate coupon" that you can redeem when you sign long term contract with "any" Apple approved service provider.

16gig Edge 299
16gig 3G 399
32gib 3G 499

That's possible. I sort of doubt that they will keep an edge only version though.

There are two reasons I believe this.

1) It would require different chipsets, which increases manufacturing costs as they would need separate manufacturing lines (which is likely more complicated than having two flash options), and also diminishes volume negotiating power for each chipset. Furthermore, I just don't see many buying the old version once 3g is available, so the unit cost will continue to go up (due to keeping manufacturing lines open and smaller chipset orders, etc...). It's a losing proposition for Apple.

2)I just don't see apple diminishing the brand by still offering an edge version when 3G is available. If by chance they do, expect to be able to easily visually see the difference, so everyone knows who has the new cool thing, and who's got the old news.

why would they release it on a monday? that makes no sense... isn't tuesday the magical day?

I'm glad I've waited to buy an iPhone. I think we'll see the 3G iPhone soon. Earlier this week there was a report that Apple may release the 3G iPhone in May and something new at WWDC.

Given that that 8GB model is reported "End-of-Life" (EOL) in the UK, I have more faith that we'll iPhone updates very soon. I can't wait!

Yay - something I put forward gets on the front page (presuming here :))

Anyway, it really does seem that the 3G version is coming very close. I was holding off getting an iPhone till it featured 3G - in the end I got a free N95 8GB upgrade from 02.

I'd be very tempted to sell both my iPod Touch and N95 and replace it with a 3G iPhone (with at least a 3.2mp camera please Apple) come June, even though I am having fun with both devices and it doesn't bother me right now carrying around both.

In addition, if Apple end up doing a decent job with the App store and price structure (not holding my breath on the two points though) I'll be tempted again not to Jailbreak it.

You have to remember that in the UK, the former pricing was:
8GB - £269 ($535)
16GB - £329 ($655)

They reduced the 8GB to £169, that's a £100 ($200) price drop. Now they've sold out of 8GB, if someone wants an iPhone (and lots of people do - especially now a lot of people have gone out and bought them) they'll have to spend £329 ($655). It may in fact not be a move to get rid of inventory, but a move to get people to buy the more expensive model.

I signed up with ATT 2 days ago and got a cheap Nokia 6126 to tie me over until the 3G iphone comes out. My Trio 650 (Sprint) is now off and out of contract.

As I payed 0 for the Nokia, the sooner the iPhone comes out the better.

Wasn't there some kind of rumour at the initial launch that there was some small-print regarding the AT&T (and, presumably, O2, T-Mobile and Orange) lock-in and that it only applied to GSM/edge handsets? If that was the case, then Apple would be free to market the 3G version unlocked.

I hope anyone doesn't get their hopes up for having a new iPhone before June. There is obviously going to be talk about it at WWDC, and plus, there hasn't been anything that has gone through the FCC that has been announced.

And what about the 16GB iPhone in the UK?

Did anybody notice that you will be able to download apps over the phone network with OS 2.0? Apple has blocked downloading music over the net up to now. I guess they will offer it now becuse of 3G, what means that there certainly will be a 3G iPhone on or before the release of iPhone OS 2.0
