This is cool. It looks like Apple will be offering a 32gb model come June. That is if they plan to keep to options available.

I'll still need more than 3G and 32GB for me to spend more money on a new iPhone. I had to replace an 8GB with a 16GB in Feb, unless the new 3G has über new features, I'll pass.

You think 80% of the population of Europe is "poor"???
Yes. 80% population coverage is about 25% land coverage. What that means is that coverage drops out outside of the cities, on motorways etc. 3G phones fall back to 2G coverage.

And no, EDGE is way too slow for the iPhone.
I agree that GPRS coverage is slow, but when you have EDGE, it's enough. Why is 3G essential on the iPhone? Email? is that too slow? Web browsing? It's not like you use the iPhone for downloading torrents or files, it's a handheld device with a small screen.

and don't forget that at 80% population (25% land) coverage, the networks have met their license obligations for 3G, and have stopped rolling out more base stations, so coverage is unlikely to improve. It's not economically viable to get 100% land coverage, unless you want telephone bills to dramatically increase!

yes, at 80% population coverage the world is finally ready, there is no advances to be made :)

well not quite. there're couple of factors making it economically viable to increase the 3g coverage. first one is that the operators want to get rid of gsm networks. it is much more economical for them to operate only one type of network, and 3g networks are much more economical than gsm networks. the economical 3g coverage for operators is thus 100%

depending on the country, the license terms may even force the operators to give up the gsm frequencies in not very distant future. so some operators have no choice but to adopt 100% 3g network.

and thirdly, the 4g is in the sight and the operators will not want to have three different types of networks to operate. again, this points to 100% coverage of 3g networks.

as for eol'd iphones, the operators are just getting the mercandise out of the shelves. no need to read too much into it: it does not predict 3g iphone coming soon or not coming soon. a good article about apple's challenges outside the us:

I would say 80% population coverage - regardless of actual land coverage - is more than adequate to say it's broadly available. I mean, 80% of Europe is (according to Wiki) almost 600 million people. Umm, yeah, that's a lot... Also, I'll go ahead and stereotype here but I'm doubting that there's a huge pent up demand for the iPhone amongst farmers who live "out in the boonies" so of that 20% who don't have 3G access I'd take a bet that 10% don't care at all, 5% think it would be nice and 5% find it annoying (yes, I totally just made up those numbers).

Having parents who live "out in the boonies" I'll tell you they don't even know what the heck 3G is, they can't even get broadband internet without paying an arm and a leg...

Now that's bad grammar!

Actually, in his example 'Jewel Foodstores' is a singular entity - much like Albertsons. If you're talking about the grocery down the street (and generally people don't refer to all the grocery stores, just the one they go to) it's a singular entity regardless if it ends in an "s." Much like a person whose last name ends in an "s" you wouldn't say "Joe Cardenas *are* sick", you'd say "Joe Cardenas *is* sick."

Yay for grammar lessons!!! I actually find these conversations sometimes more interesting than people complaining about Apple's latest move.

I believe a few pages earlier people basically said it's a case by case basis. You might have some luck or you might not. I think from what's been said your best case scenario might be a store outside of a major city - maybe where the demand isn't quite as high...

It's basically like launch day, pretty much everyone is sold out but I'm sure there's a few places that have a couple (reminds me of the situation with the Wii over here last christmas)

This is horrible news for those people wanting an 8GB phone.

For those wanting an 8GB iPhone ... guess what ... they have been out for a really LONG TIME now.

Should have thought about getting one long before they were eol'd.

Seems fairly hard to buy in Birmingham now, 4 got bought by colleagues today (though one was to replace an iPhone lost in the office and never returned. Also we've had another iPhone definitely stolen in the office).

iPhone G5 next Tuesday? :D

It does seem odd that there was a mad push to get these things sold. If the 3G release was going to be June, why not let them more slowly trickle out?

I think Apple will release it 1-2 weeks ahead of WWDC so that the conference can highlight specific features that are able to utilize 3G - maybe video chat etc.

nada.
he would tell us all the features and say...
on sale now.
