This is fantastic for poor students and the like (such as myself, for instance) who just found the $599 price point a bit too high.

And we all knew the price would fall eventually. The only thing I'm surprised about is that they are not offering a 16GB iPhone for either $499 or $549, something around there.

I have to pay T-Mobile something like $200 anyway to cancel my line with them, so the iPhone was always more like a $800 device to me. Now it's finally feasible.

I think this will get a lot of people from other carriers to start switching over to AT&T. I can't wait to see how many iPhones Apple manages to push during the holiday season at this new low price point!

Nothing special about this price drop... in the mobile phone business it is normal practise.. They all do it, Nokia, Motorola...
Heck, I bought a Nokia for over $1000 around 2 years ago, now it is less then $500...

You are talking about a 2 year old product.
I don't think you get why so many of the iPhone owners(including myself) are mad.
The iPhone is only 2 months old.

To all the whiners: oh boo hoo. I paid $600 for mine, too, but so what? Did I get what I expected for my money? Yes. Does my iphone work any worse because other people can now get it cheaper? No. So why would I complain?

Hey 200 bucks is 200 bucks! Although I still don't have an iPhone yet, that price reduction is two iPhone battery replacements, AppleCare and an iPhone case plus lunch!

Everyone had the option of jumping on the bandwagon early (as I did) or waiting for the dust to settle and the market to determine what features and at what price the iPhone would be commercially successful. This type of early adjustment to marketing strategy is not unique to the iPhone; it happens to most new cutting edge products since the manufacturer does not really know what the market will bear when they first develop marketing plans for their new products.

No doubt that we early adopters paid $200 more then folks will pay from this day forward; the thing to remember is that we had use of our iPhones for that two month period that new purchasers did not. If that early use of the phone (or any new product) is not worth the price then you should not be an early adopter in the future since you will most likely always get "burned" in your opinion.

I do not feel that I was burned, I thought all along that there would be a lower price on the iPhone quite soon after I purchased one, and, I am actually surprised that the new units do not offer more features then the original in fact. Apple will not gain the market share they hoped to achieve unless they adjust their marketing strategy to meet the demands of their potential customers.

We all gain if Apple's new price point brings in another million new iPhone users that just happen to become new Mac (and Apple TV, Airport Extreme Router, etc.) purchasers as well (as many have). Apple won't will continue to develop the great new products that we all enjoy unless they have the sales and profits to do so.

too bad i didnt sell me 4 gb iphone a few days earlier probably for around $400 then upgrade to the 8 gb for free

this is some ********

hahaha, suckers! Serves you right for buying Gen1 Apple products. You knew there would be cheaper/better ones soon enough. That's the price you pay for early adopting. If you bought within the last week and you visit these forums, then you're an even bigger idiot because you knew this was coming. We all know not to buy before a big launch event, so stop complaining if you just couldn't keep it in your pants(your $$ that is) until then.

Oh well, at least I looked really cool for a few months... and got chicks;):apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Like every other iPhone owner here I am very disappointed with this. I expected a price drop but not 33% in 60 days. A $100 drop would have been significant, they didn't need to do this for months.

My only hope is that the reason they guided earnings lower this quarter due to 'product changes' is related to a rebate they will offer existing iPhone users.

This is the first time I would say that I would consider not buying Apple going forward as they should be looking after their early adopters a little better than this. Nobody will trust their first gen pricing after this, at least a rebate would indicate that they just got the pricing wrong, they didn't deliberately set it to screw the early adopters.

Don't ever use the words "every other iPhone user." There are many people who disagree with you. I would happily stand in line again the first day I bought mine.

AAHHH, the smell of lawsuits is in the air, yea I'm pissed since we bought two of them, but Apple would make a lot of happy campers by offering a $100 credit, since you more than likely would have spent that money at Apple anyway, just a small good will gesture and shut up all the whining.

They dropped the price for one simple reason: the iPod Touch.

If the Touch was half the price of the iPhone with the same storage, it would massively cannibalize iPhone sales.

And didn't he say that they were on track to sell a million iPhones by the end of the month?

From the beginning I said I will buy an iPhone when it is ~$300 for 16 GB. At this rate it is going to be sooner then I expected. Here is hoping by next summer.

I think what pisses me off the most, is that I know how calculated Apple is. They know months in advance what their strategy is, so I feel it reasonable to say on June 29th some inside Apple knew this was going to happen within 60 - 90 days.

It's not that we feel ripped off, because this thing is worth $600, its that we feel taken advantage of. Taken advantage of by a a company that we trusted.

As a gesture, they should offer all buyers before today Applecare for the phone, and / or itms cards equaling $100.00. Simply meet us half way.

Personally, I don't regret having gotten my iPhone on Launch Day. It was a fun experience waiting in line for it and chatting with other Apple fans, it was a fun experience using the iPhone for the first time and it STILL is fun using the iPhone. I love my iPhone and that hasn't changed even though the price has dropped. It doesn't devalue my iPhone any.

Sure, it would be nice if they'd do what they did with Aperture and issue al of us original buyers a rebate coupon good at the Apple online store or the iTunes store..... I think it was within six months of Aperture's debut at $500 (or was it $600?) that they dropped the price on the software and issued rebates. Maybe they'll do that with iPhone purchasers, too? Probably not, but it's a nice thought....

It's weird watching people who obviously cannot afford a $600.00 phone laugh at the people who can. I am pretty annoyed at the $200.00 price drop but I take it as a learning experience since I have never bought anything expensive from Apple before. I now know to wait a few months before buying anything from that company. Maybe new laptops will suddenly drop 33% in 2 months :)

they do, theyre called refurbished:apple::apple::apple:

You are an idiot if you paid $600 for something that you, apparently, knew wasn't worth it. To come on here and complain about it only reinforces your stupidity in a public manner.

I could've purchased one. I decided I would wait. I'm still going to wait, too.

There will always be the "oh if only I had waited ___ days."

DEAL WITH IT.

You are exactly 100% right.

Bought the iPhone on the first weekend. It's been a great time having it over the last couple of months. Very happy with it. The cut in price is normal and driven by business. That's how you grow your market share.

If you bought in the last week or so I'd have some feeling for those folks. But they can probably return it pay a restocking fee and get a new one for less.

Sure, a price drop is inevitable. However, this is a brand new product that millions of people helped make successful. Additionally, a price drop of $200 (1/3 of the price) is almost unheard of for a new product released just a few months ago.

Yeah, I bought mine when it came out, and I was shocked to see the price drop. Personally, I think it is a bit of a slap in the face to the iPhone owners who helped launch this product as a success. Am I gonna sue? No. However, calling people "children" and telling them to "grow up" is childish. Let the people vent their frustration without making it worse by treating them with such disrespect. If you don't agree with the way they feel, either keep it to yourself or express your points with the same manner you would appreciate being addressed.

I assume we're all adults here, let's try to act like it and treat each other accordingly. Please.

Count me among the dissapointed. Is it logical for me to be disappointed about this? Yes and no. We all expect price drops, but this much so soon makes me feel like I was used.

There were a couple of things that Apple did that piss me off; for example, the new iPod touch has a 16 gig flash; they could very easily have put that into the high-end iPhone from the beginning. I paid a premium for the product, was happy to do so, but Apple stiffed me a bit.

So, it has tarnished, just a bit, my feelings about the phone. Stop telling me that I shouldn't feel slighted. I do feel slighted. And that affects my feelings about the phone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1C28 Safari/419.3)

this happens all the time. The price you pay to have it right away! I could not wait three months either. Oh well.

Oh the rage the rage. The self-rightous rage.

My worry is -- is this an indication that apple isn't meeting it's own goals? Is this like the RAZR, with a price and percieved value that launched directly into freefall? Early talk discussed the iphone as a way for apple, and perhaps the whole phone market, to escape the extrememly thin margins and boom-bust cycle of hits that has been so cruel to so many (particularly motorola). With this price drop, it looks like apple might not be as miraculous as it claimed.

That said, it could be a different story. Maybe 600 was planned as a way to break in the idea of paying plenty for cell phones. Probably this was done to keep the iphone in line with the ipod touch (which, in turn needs to be kept in line with regular ipod prices). But somehow the iphone seems like a bigger product right now (which is of course because it has taken so long for the ipod to get updated... which leads to the risk of a potential loss of a major revenue stream, and a monopoly at that... for which the touch is the only way to make it look like it's still innovative)

But that's all doom and gloomy. Chances are, they're still making enough money on the iphone (indicating that they hauled big time these last three months...), and with these prices, demand ought to skyrocket over the holiday season, establishing apple as a major force in the cell phone market.

You wanted to pay that for a new product right way. So Shut up. If you are pissy about $200. you probably stretched and paid for something you could not afford anyway. I was waiitng and I still am for the revised iPhone, probably at MAcworld in January. Bigger better and improved.
