I can't believe you people who got your phones on release day are asking for and getting refunds.

Apple didn't owe you anything.

$200 is a whole lot different spread across two years than it is spread across TWO MONTHS.

It's $50 a week, based on the current release/price drop. And just under $2 a week based on your calculations. That's a pretty huge difference.

Not relative to the ~$1600 dollars that you'll spend in monthly fees over the two-year service contract. Fluctuations in the price of any cell phone are small compared to the service fees. Such is the nature of the cell phone business.

Man if they do come out with a rebate a few people are going to come out way ahead. A bunch of people could end up getting the rebate twice if apple isn't keeping track of who has gotten one already. Which I assume they are not because of the sparatic nature of the rebates so far. Oh well, here is to a 4gb user hoping for a little break.

If I had bought a Zune or an xbox 360 and 2 months later the price dropped $200 I would have taken it with stride and said ..well's that Microsoft for you.

But I bought an Apple product and this is something that I have never expected from them.

I can understand the business decision, but I guess I am naive and never thought of Apple as just a business.

Live and learn. Was going to purchase 3 new Imac's for the office but might as well wait a few months to see if they drop in price too.

So wait a second. I have read so many times that people complained that Apple:

1) Does not drop their price fast enough and that people are paying the same price for old technology

and

2) Their price drops are not enough.

So they drop their price quickly and by 33% and the complaint is they dropped the price too soon and too much.

Wow, no wonder people have such a hard time making it in this world. Get a clue people

I don't understand this thinking that Apple owe's it's customers $200 for their purchase? Sure it was unexpected, but Apple giving back $200 for each iPhone user??? If Job's wass right and they have sold almost 1 million phones, that'd be at least $150,000,000 of profit down the tubes, doesn't sounds like a Jobs sort of move. I find it odd that the happiest users 2 months ago are now so unhappy, the phone hasn't changed, you paid for it, live with it. I didn't hear any PS3 users crying about the price drop for them, my friend even bought his 3 weeks (just out of being able to return it) before the price drop and he didn't care.

Apple used to be different... They don't drop price like every month like PC. That is why they are different, and I love them for that. Now they are just like any PC companies (Dell, HP, Compaq)

excerpt from WS Journal interview.

WSJ: Do you think you could meet your target of selling a million iPhones by the end of the month in the absence of this price cut?

Mr. Jobs: Absolutely. That's not why we're doing it. The biggest factor is that we got our own market research back and it confirmed what the third party market research had basically said. IPhone customer satisfaction is off the charts -- better than any product we've ever had. And we're thrilled with that. Another piece of data we have is that customers have voted with their wallets and overwhelmingly bought the 8 gigabyte model.

We're coming up on the holiday season. Our Mac business is really strong. We've got the best lineup of iPods we've ever had. It's time to be as aggressive as we can be. If we're not, then we have to wait another year for the next holiday season. So we made the decision to put the pedal to the medal and go for it this holiday season, to get as many people using iPhones as we can. We could have done this a little bit later, but this event is going to communicate it and position it with our other devices. It was a wonderful opportunity.

(Go for it Steve!!)

A LOT of people are hurt by the SUDDEN price drop

As for myself, I am kinda shocked... but not quite angry.... it only seems natural that they'd offer a $200 coupon with an expiration date on it ( Like Aperture).

Not only did we lose out, but the Ebayers holding stock are stuck as well as those that ordered bulk to have a supply of phones to unlock ( I know Apple could care less about them). But, imagine Apple sending each 'unlocker' dozens of coupons... it most likely ain't gonna happen.

I still would not be surprised to see Apple deal with this huge disappointment to their loyal followers...

Stood in line and got #75 and #76 iPhone from an Apple Store. No regrets, greatest advance in technology since the original Mac. Worth every cent. Best phone I have ever owned, and I am a classic early adopter. My experience with the iPhone in the last two months was worth the extra $400 bucks out of pocket. Congrats to all who can now afford one, forget the rhetoric, grab yourself one, if you hate AT&T (no complaints here so far, formally a T-mobile customer and was happy with that service) get a iPod touch, Apple released an excellent line of iPods for everyone. Rejoice. REMEMBER YOU COULD HAVE PURCHASED A ZUNE, IMAGINE HOW YOU WOULD HAVE FELT THEN! WORST YET PAYFORSURE!

Well, apple is now getting bad press.

I didn't see if it was posted already, but from cnn's business 2.0:

http://blogs.business2.com/apple/2007/09/the-iphone-rebe.html

This is going to be very bad for apple's image if they don't do something.

I didn't buy one because I felt it wasn't worth the $599 price. I still won't buy one because it may drop another $50-100 before year end.

I can defnitely understand why people are upset. You expect a price drop, just not so large so quickly. I bought my xbox 360 elite and the price droped $50 a couple of weeks later. I didn;t care because it was only 10%($50). I would have been mad if it was 30%.

lol, a ZUNE is $250. iPhone was $600, can't compare.
This is going to be very bad for apple's image if they don't do something.
apple's image? why the hell should users care about apple's image instead of their own benefit? I know I have myself in 1st place rather than apple.

Boo-Hoo

I'm so sick of all this crying. Macrumors is going to suck for a while because of all the people who are crying. I feel like they would have been happy if apple raised the price. How can you get mad at a company for lowering the price to make a product more affordable for consumers. Yes it was 2 months after the original release, but its not a "punishment" like some are calling it. Get over it. its $200. Apple is trying to make people happy and make more money by lowering the price. Its unbelievable how much people complain on this site. Apple released some amazing products today and out of the thousands of posts since then, only a handful are positive comments. Apple is not a perfect company that is going to make EVERYONE happen and it has never claimed to be. Start your own company or buy a zune and a razr and stop being so negative. You people act like you and apple were dating and you said "I love you" and they didn't say it back. They are a corporation. Not your best friend or lover. Maybe they will send out complimentary tissues to wipe away the tears.

I was going to be paying AT&T the money anyways for the next 2+ years, just as I have the past 9. So, for me, the price of the iPhone was $599, not $2200. So, the price drop of $200 is 30% drop in price.

I wonder when Apple is going to drop their computers 30% 60 days after the release. I'd definitely buy a new $2400 PowerBook for $1700.

If you buy and use an iPhone, you'll be spending a minumum of ~$2000 over two years. There's no way around that. You can't rationalize away the service fees just because you'd still have to pay them for a different phone, or because you've already been paying them.

If you could ignore the service fees, then you should be complaining that even the newly priced $399 iPhone costs infinite times as much as the free phones that are available with some service contracts.

This is just getting ridiculous.

I'm sure someone brought this up....
For the people who have received a refund of $200, is it a flat $200 or is it adjusted for taxes (e.g.: $216.25, inclusive of estimated NY sales tax)?

Theoretically - say that Apple gives you a flat $200 refund without refunding the proper tax adjustment, they could claim the remaining tax dollars to the SEC/U.S. Government and say that they "issued a refund" and could receive a tax break on sales of the original iPhone price. Basically, I am saying that you should have received more than $200 for tax-adjusted purposes.

Estimation (NY Based):
100,000 iPhones sold in NY (could be higher/lower, but I'm not too sure of exact sale numbers - using 10% (decent assumption) of 1,000,000 total units sold to represent sales figures in NY)

X-amount of iPhone users x $16.25 (tax that you paid on that $200) = claim amount

100,000 X $16.25 = $1.625mn Apple netted in illegal tax-benefits (theoretically).

I am not making a FUD proposal, I own an iPhone (bought it on iDay) and I also am an Apple stockholder.

Any thoughts on this...?

please, what would you feel if you just throw $200 into the water?

Its not the crying... its that there hasn't been a consistent answer. Some people (first day adopters) are reporting with receipt pictures that some apple stores are refunding them $200. And some are reporting credit from the apple store of various amounts... And finally some are reporting a no go from apple. What gives? Give all the early adopters the same guarantee or none, I would have accepted that answer.

I was parading around here a week ago saying a WIFI iPod would stop me from buying an iPhone...but wow! I dont know now...with this price drop, I might just pickup a 4GB iPhone and hold onto my 5G 30gig! (who am i kidding im getting the 16GB touch)

Man am i glad i didn't pony 599 for an iPhone! I mean, they are cool...but not 100 bucks a month cool.

BTW

i knew iPhoners were going to whine about SOMETHING after this update...but I didnt expect them to get 200 bucks stolen from them. I have to say the price drop (at least the magnitude of the price drop) was the least expected announcement on my part.

Amazing, people pay a lot of money for bragging right and that fuzzy feeling to show their wealth and status with a hip new toy.

For a business users the $200 would have made no difference, considering you use it for business and it most likely has made you money either by making your work flow more productive or whatever the situation might be.

If you were a fan, rest assure you must have show your new toy to all your friends and family and were the centre of envy for 2+ months till present.

So those who paid the extra money, give it a rest. No one knows for certain if the price would drop or not, it just happened to be that way. Looking on the bright side there will no introduce a 16GB iPhone model for $499 USD.

I am happy that Steve Jobs has reduced the price, as Apple will sell a lot more over the holiday season to outpace those 1 million sales from end of June till this presentation.

FYI, I have also been burnt in the past due to price drops and hardware/ component upgrades.......I don't bitch about it as I utilized its benefits well enough.

Suck it up princess(es).

What an idiotic assumption!

Windows of Opportunity

I was outside the 10 day price adjustment from Apple, but within the 14 day return window. I asked for credit, turned down since I was outside the adjustment window (I think August 26th is the cut off for the 10 day period) then I was ready to return the thing (and re purchase at the lower price) when the CSR relented and credited me two hundred bucks. Very nice.

Please, please people, check your credit card agreements as nearly ALL Mastercard and Visa holders are protected. These are from 30 to 60 day price protection plans. You will need to get the proper form from them (some are available on line), collect receipts (credit card statement and bill of sale) and most importantly find a printed (NOT INTERNET) advertisement with the new $399 price. There are special phone numbers for the credit card companies additional features -- you won't have any luck with their standard people (except to get the proper number to call). Good luck

I dont understand everyone here has a computer and some sort of electronics, everyone knows how the value drops right away. I mean your computer is considered outdated after 6 months, why is everyone being surprised with the iphone?

ZUNE = $0

iPhone = 60 days of incredible fun and enjoyment that I have not experienced from another piece of technology and I have owned 29 different Macintoshes since 1988.
