please, what would you feel if you just throw $200 into the water?

You invested in a product and service that has made you life just a little bit brighter, even for 2 months. Why would you consider $200 being wasted?

When investors lose hundreds and thousands on their stocks, they learn from they mistakes. Blame no one other than yourselves or shall I say commend yourselves on bringing a "revolutionary" product to the masses. :)

You didnt throw it in the water. You bought a product with it and still have that product. You knew by buying early you risked glitches and price drops. You still own the same phone you were happy with yesterday but now it is cheaper for more people to be happy with it.

I do agree that the inconsistent policies suck. But that is probably not the fault of apple. Store managers have to ensure customer satisfaction on a case by case basis.

besides all the tears on the ground with all the electronics around cant be too safe in the stores.

Please don't. No one who works there had anything to do with the decisions your upset about.

I AGREE....I do feel sympathy to those whom feel "cheated" but that's the price you PAY for being early adopters!!!

I personally bought (4) 8GB myself and for my family @ $599.00 each....and we all are loving it for the past 2 months!!! Big F*cking Deal prices dropped....that's expected.

i.e. I purchased a Sharp 45" LCD HDTV for $10,000 plus tax 2 years ago and it can be had for $2,000 nowadays...but that is the price I pay for wanting it so badly and quickly.

/sigh to all that are "whining"

apple's image? why the hell should users care about apple's image instead of their own benefit? I know I have myself in 1st place rather than apple.

Glad to hear you like yourself. After you put the Old English 800 down you will see that if you want restitution for a 68 day lifecyle of a "very well selling product", then it is a good thing that Apple will want to protect their image.

Apple Online refund

Hey all,

I was happy paying the full price on July 31, but called the online store anyways. It was an hour wait on hold, and the guy said he had 270 calls backed up behind me. He said that I was out of the two week window, but could give me a $100 refund anyways so that's fine by me, as I expected nothing. So people bellyaching, and even those that aren't might want to call anyways. I'm going to blow my $100 tomorrow at the apple store in Atlanta!

All the people saying they are going to pirate the new OS to get back, I doubt they would have paid for it to begin with.

OH OH ..... so true!!!!!!!!!! I agree 100% as I'm an investor.

I was outside the 10 day price adjustment from Apple, but within the 14 day return window. I asked for credit, turned down since I was outside the adjustment window (I think August 26th is the cut off for the 10 day period) then I was ready to return the thing (and re purchase at the lower price) when the CSR relented and credited me two hundred bucks. Very nice.

Please, please people, check your credit card agreements as nearly ALL Mastercard and Visa holders are protected. These are from 30 to 60 day price protection plans. You will need to get the proper form from them (some are available on line), collect receipts (credit card statement and bill of sale) and most importantly find a printed (NOT INTERNET) advertisement with the new $399 price. There are special phone numbers for the credit card companies additional features -- you won't have any luck with their standard people (except to get the proper number to call). Good luck

An Optimist, we need more individuals such as yourself. :)

Wow just wow is all I have to say. I wanted exactly what Apple announced today an iPhone without the phone/att contract.

Finally Apple announced the product I wanted for so long. iPod touch two thumbs up Apple.

...and to all the people that are whining about the price-drop grow up this is how it goes....products launch and get cheaper along the way. It's the nature of technology.

Usually Apple likes to keep the prices steady but they add technology to it. hence MBP has been staying at 1999 forever but every so often Apple updates processors/gpu and so on..so with that you don't feel that bad about it.

Jobs Interview

Can't keep up with all the post's here so not sure if this has already been posted

Q: What do you say to customers who just bought a new iPhone for $599? Sorry?

A [SJ]: That's technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that's what happens in technology.

AHHHH I am 10 days past the 60 and they said no exceptions and they would have given me all 200 back ahhhhhhhh. Well I guess that 200 that I spent at the restaurant the other night and didn't get to take anything home seems like a bigger waste of money. Just trying to reason the money spending here.

I Hate Getting Caught Ou But It's My Own Fault

I agree with everyone who is ticked off but the person to point the finger at is ourselves. I am one of those, "got to have it first" people. I just cannot wait to get my hands on a new iPod Touch. I bought an 80g video iPod 20 months ago. It wa th same with my IMac - two months after I purchased it they came out with the iSight version. One month after I bought my 50" Panasonic, just last may, Panasonic started selling a monitor that everyone said was better than mine and now you can buy my model for $300 less than I paid for it. In fact, Panasonic dropped the prise from 3199Canadian in May to 2699Canadian in August. What can you do?

i think that I will wait until Christmas to treat myself to an IPod Touch then maybe I wil just drop into Best Buy and pick one up in a few weeks whatever.

I do not blame Apple, they are trying to make money and stay ahead of some pretty heavy hitting competition - what do you expect?

Here's what I have to say on the price drop.

When I logged onto macrumors, excited, to see the new iPods, I came to the headline "8GB iPhone $399, 4GB Discontinued"

At first, I was PISSED. There's no other word for it. And now that a few hours have gone by, I'm angry, but I'm more disappointed.

The first thing I did was call Customer Service. They asked me what I was calling about and I said I was calling about the iPhone price drop and felt that I should be reimbursed for $200. I knew I probably wouldn't get it, however, when I turned from being pissed to being disappointed was when the representative stated:

"We here at Apple are always trying to satisfy our customers by offering our products at competitve prices. After time, the price of technology decreases, so that is why we are offering the price drop"

I was angry, but I kept a calm, professional tone and replied that if Apple was concerned about their customers they wouldn't have 1) decreased the price of the iPhone 200 dollars after two months from being released totally screwing over the loyal people who made the iPhone what it is today. And 2) it's quite ridiculous that you have to wait a whole year for the iPod to drop $50, because sadly, the price of technology in the iPhone hasn't dropped $200 dollars in 60 days.

Don't let Jobs fool you saying they decided to be competitve during this holiday season. Apple knew what they were going to do for a while before this actually happened. I love my iPhone, and it's not 200 dollars that makes me so angry. It is the fact that the people who bought the iPhone before today made the iPhone what it was, and if it wasn't for us Apple wouldn't be "on track to sell a million." I can't say that I wasn't warned, but I had faith in Apple, and they really did let me down. I don't know if I can ever buy another Apple product and feel completely comfortable with my purchase.

EDIT: I'd also like to say that if the iPhone's price would've dropped $200 on June 29, 2008, and I bought an iPhone on June 14, I would not be mad about the price drop and not being able to get my money back because the product has been out for a year. The product has not even been out for two months and people are getting the same exact product for 200 dollars less, so it is not the same thing.

A lot of pissed off early adopters.

I think you should smash every bit of apple equipment you have in protest,
that will show the bastards !!!

Just think of all the iFun you have been having with your iPhone$, touch it... you know you want to.

I dont think its just the price you pay for being an early adopter. 200 dollars far exceeds that in my opinion. Three months of use does not equal 200 bucks. I have never felt so betrayed by a company I use to love so much. I will never again buy an apple product. This is coming from a die hard mac fan of 20 something years.

You buy a new car from a dealer. Drive it off the lot. Did it not depreciate as soon as it left the dealership?

My new Sony Ericsson P1i price dropped two weeks later.

Bought my iMac G5 when they announced it with 20" with iSight. 3 months later they announced the Intel transition for the iMac.

This is how it is folks with any consumer product. I can't believe what the fuss is all about.

It is the fact that the people who bought the iPhone before today made the iPhone what it was, and if it wasn't for us Apple wouldn't be "on track to sell a million."

Seems the people who made the iphone what it is are the designers and hardware and software developers who I assume worked many a hard day and night to get this piece of technology into your self important little hand.

I have never felt so betrayed by a company I use to love so much.

Apple is a cold, soulless, profit driven corporation, not your best friend or lover. It is not looking out for your feelings or your well being in the least bit. The bottom line is the only motivator apple has for doing anything no matter what delusions to the contrary some here seem to have.

Actually no, as I've argued this already... no car I know of drops thousands of dollars within a 2 month period -- meaning that two months later, those going to the dealership can get it for that much cheaper....

Yes, as you drive off the lot... YOUR car depreciates in value significantly... but not the new ones still sitting there waiting for their new owner.

Thats a bad example... sorry.

16GB iPhone for $499

I don't see what all the whining is about. 2 months, 6 months, either way you bought something that you KNEW would not be the "coolest" thing soon enough.

Apple dropped, the 4GB all together, lowered the price of the 8GB...is that so strange?

Don't you guys think that now they'll release a 16GB iPhone for $499 in a couple months?

Yes, as you drive off the lot... YOUR car depreciates in value significantly... but not the new ones still sitting there waiting for their new owner.

Thats a bad example... sorry.
True. You're right on that.

But not my other 2 examples. The retail price of my phone dropped in 2 weeks and the 20" iMac G5 with iSight got replaced with new Intel chips a few months after it was introduced.

I'd also like to say that if the iPhone's price would've dropped $200 on June 29, 2008, and I bought an iPhone on June 14, I would not be mad about the price drop and not being able to get my money back because the product has been out for a year. The product has not even been out for two months and people are getting the same exact product for 200 dollars less, so it is not the same thing.

I purchased a brand new a couple days after the launch of Sony Ericcson S500i for $350 a month ago, it now costs around $270, and I've seen it for $230 at some places. Around the same range of the 33% drop, but hey, these are cell phones, a super competitive market. I'm not yelling at SE to give me money back for buying their phone.

The reason why most are upset is that they are the same cautious users who go to the Buying Tips forum and ask should I buy now b/c they don't want to get ripped. The iPhone came out, seemed like safest time to buy is at the beginning of a product cycle, but hence the wait and see buyers win again.

Also the surprise of Apple cutting prices so quickly is a shock to loyal diehard fans. I'm glad to see Apple moving in this direction, more competitive pricing, more Apple products in more people's hands is a good thing. Apple exclusivity is now gone (at least in my area, everyone has an Apple something, MB, MBP, iMac, mini, iPod _____), and hopefully this means that Apple will continue to develop newer, better products quicker and for cheaper at the same or better quality.

It actually does, if you step back and think about it.

A company offers a product for a price. When you BUY that product, you are saying to the company "the features of this product are worth the price you have set." You are, in effect, voting with your dollars. The company offers a product, you deem it worth the price they set, you buy it.

If you didn't think the phone was worth $600, you shouldn't have bought it. You should have waited until its price was more in line with its features.

Once you HAVE bought a product, that's the end of it. You've said to the company "that product was worth the money I spent, that's why I bought it." From that point on, no one is beholden to ANYONE to keep that price. Why should they be? You've already voted. The fact that it's now $200 cheaper is irrelevant.

I absolutely agree, that products inevitably will lessen in value with time. The issue many people are taking though is not just the price drop, but the fact that the price drop has occurred in a little over 60 days from this "revolutionary" new device that Apple spent a lot of time justifying the price points of $499 and $599 for. Now it's even cheaper than the originally cheapest 4 GB iPhone. It doesn't add up. $100 price drop in 6 month's is much more in line with how technology evolves. It's getting to the point that months won't matter, it could be weeks now that a new product lessens in value.

The point is Apple is setting a dangerous trend, that technology may evolve and dictate the value of products is one thing, but to do so within 60 days or less of a brand new product that over a million people dished out a lot of money for thus making said product a success is a serious issue that people have the right to address. Criticizing them by throwing it back in their faces with childish antics (not saying you did, but MANY, MANY people online have) is not helping the situation, but merely adding insult to injury.

Beyond that, it was a bad business tactic for Apple.

EDIT: I want to make something clear. This isn't about the MONEY, this is about the PRINCIPLE of the situation. I could care less about $200, after all it was a $600 product. It IS about setting precedents for how fast evolutions in technology will dictate the price and turn over rates of products. Statistically, 6-8 months is the going rate of standard price drops in products. 60 days for a brand new product line, however, is unheard, no matter the comparison, may it be cars, RAZR's, etc. This is a smart phone with new technology that is a new product line for a company just entering the smart phone industry, and was made in part successful by the million plus iPhone buyers. So please, don't jump on me for the sake of $200, it's much more than that.
