The SE just got a little more tempting for me. I have been holding on to an iOS 6 iPhone 5 - still in perfect condition, so I should be able to actually profit by upgrading!
This is starting to feel like the iPad 3 trap i fell for and haven't fully recovered from. Hoping the iPad Air 3 comes out this fall and includes pencil support for a more reasonable price that most of us were hoping for.
The iPad is the quality of the device, it is the usability of the OS, it is the long level of support, it is the volume of apps, it is more than the sum of its specs. Apple has always been more than spec sheets and always will be. Go try the $350 tablet and be happy.....
I'm starting to believe they really are doomed
Wait. They raised the price because you can spend even more money on accessories? Not because it's own use was raised to professional level, which would require more memory, etc? There should be a reason to raise the price of the item, not base it on selling you more stuff. Now if the pen came with it then I would agree that the increase made sense. Still would think 2gb memory in a "pro" device is crazy.
Makes no sense whatsoever, I see no point in debating it. Apple really loves you!
Lol... Yeah, I agree... it doesn't make sense. But we all go crazy about smartphones each year.. upgrading each year or every other year. When we honestly can get by for 4 years or even longer. But we are all fanatics about these gadgets we consume.
4GB is actually unbelievably amazing on the device. I've yet to have it crash or spaz out despite having 10+ safari tabs open, music, procreate, photos, notes, phonto, and Facebook all running at the same time and it didn't skip a beat. That's great news for the SE and makes it a really compelling option for the price.
2GB of RAM, however, just doesn't feel like enough for an iPad. My old iPad 3 has 1GB of RAM and virtually any website will crash it within a few minutes after running out of RAM. Just having double the RAM isn't going to do it. Actually, even 4GB might not be enough, though I'll admit I haven't used the big iPad Pro for more than a few minutes.
Sadly, modern webpages are incredibly RAM heavy. On my desktop I commonly see "infinite scrolling" style sites consume multiple gigabytes of ram for a single tab. The move to more and more JS framework-driven sites means this is only going to be become more common.
Maybe in your world. I don't know any like that. All the non-techs I know choked when they paid $499, but did so because of all the iPad buzz. The people that bought the top end models were geeks like me. No, regular consumers do not pay $599 for a tablet. The go to Amazon and get a Fire for $150 or $200. In case you haven't kept up with Apple financials, iPad sales are in a tailspin because regular consumers don't pay computer prices for tablets anymore.
We'll easily find out for sure, but I see almost no reason why that would be true. There's no big additional RAM gobbling feature on the Pro. Unless the Pencil somehow spawns its own process that gobbles tens of megabytes of RAM (and I seriously doubt it does). The third core isn't going to make up the difference either, because we already know the A9X is faster in multicore than the A8X. E.g. 200 + 200 is more than 100 + 100 + 100.Air 2 probably uses less ram than the iPad pro 9.7...it will be interesting to see if thats true plus that third core gives you guys some leverage as well. If it wasn't for the two additional speakers and the improved camera, the ipad pro 9.7 is just a revamped ipad air 2.
I can't even purposely run out of RAM on my 6S Plus and Air 2. I'm not sure why everyone thinks they need 4GB.
Yes, Amazon really drove the tablet market to the bottom. I spent some time setting up a Fire for my mom and it is a decent tablet that does the majority of what people use an iPad for, Internet browsing, light gaming, reading etc.... The premium that you are paying for the iPad is speed, access to the App Store, nicer fit and finish, but the basic capabilities are similar.
And the more amazing part about the iPad pro 12.9 is that 3.89 gb of that 4 GB ram is usable ram.....4GB is actually unbelievably amazing on the device. I've yet to have it crash or spaz out despite having 10+ safari tabs open, music, procreate, photos, notes, phonto, and Facebook all running at the same time and it didn't skip a beat.
This actually really sucks that Apple put 2GB in their "Pro" device. Not to be a jerk, but it makes me a little happier about my iPP purchase, but I know a lot of you wanted a smaller but just as capable iPP.
I honestly think Apple's quality of products and customer support/sat has gone out the window since 2014.
Kal.
Seriously...? My $350 Tab S2 comes with 3GB RAM and an amazing AMOLED display that looks goegeous.
Seriously Apple these are just basic things. And it's as if Apple is stuck in the year 2011 with this disgusting 16GB base model.
I wanted to like the SE and the new pro so badly...but of course Apple had to go overboard and cheat people with awful specs that wouldn't have been competitive a year ago.
Yes and a 64gb air 2 at 599(which is what it has been priced at for 2 years until yesterday) has crappy speakers, a 2 year old processor, and no pencil support. I'd gladly take 32gb with those new features.
Same! At first the only thing I was kind of disappointed was the USB 2.0, but now only 2 gigs of RAM is a major let down. Now I don't even feel like buying the 12.9" pro because the screen improvements of the new 9.7" and camera improvements are bound to arrive. SMH Apple. If they put in USB 3.0 and 4 gigs of RAM I would have 99% bought this iPad as my first iPad. Now its unlikely.I was going to buy the iPad, cause I thought it would have 4 Gb. Now I'm not interested.
Call me old fashioned - isn't it proper to do the editing on a iMac/Macbook??If you're talking about doing "real work", a browser tab test isn't the thing to go about it with. Try rendering 4K video with multiple streams and see if the RAM has a huge effect on that sort of thing.
Because numbers are better when bigger and people feel entitled to the biggest of numbers.
Logically smaller devices always have better screens especially if you buy the latest and greatest. The iPad pro 12.9 has the better resolution and the exact same ppi as the pro 9.7, true tone is nice and all but it does not make such a drastic difference as some have made it out to be, the iPad pro 9.7 did not get a resolution bump or an increase in ppi so for those expecting the screen to have this crazy wow factor forget it. I'm sure samsung devices still have that advantage.Same! Now its unlikely.![]()
And even better, IT DOESNT HAVE 3D TOUCH! Glad Apple realized and admitted to it being absolutely, positively, undeniably useless.
But I'm not getting it though because I mean who wants a 4 inch screen. Hell, I might get the plus and I've got the 6s. Lol
I don't think anyone is complaining about 2GB RAM per se, but that the 9.7 Pro has 2GB rather than 4GB. The 9.7 Pro feels like a half-step between the Air 2 and 13 Pro rather than being a proper alternative to the 13 Pro.
I was going to purchase the new iPad and now it comes out that it only has 2GB of RAM? Are you kidding me?? The same as iPhone SE or even my old iPad Air 2. Why the hack do you call it PRO? This is insane.. Now I'm really considering getting the big iPad Pro..
