It's a pity iPhone 12 mini is selling so poorly...
Why? If it’s not wanted it’s because people don’t want it. It’s a niche product and I believe it’s loud voices especially in the influencer communities that were pushing the idea that there is strong demand for it.

Exactly. Small minority of very loud people who believe the “one true iphone” must be suitable for one-handed use by people with tiny hands.

Of course, people will buy what they like and enjoy using, and I'm not against it.

However, it is difficult for me to understand how 6.1" smartphones are so popular, because I've tried to use the XR or the iPhone 11 with one hand, and it slips from my hand and falls to the Apple Store table. And reaching to control center with my thumb is impossible (it was a bit difficult on 5.8" iPhones, but it is impossible with a 6.1" iPhone).

What leads me to think, do people actually leave everything on the ground (bags, books, etc) and stop everything they're doing, to use their smartphone with both hands simultaneously??? I personally find that a waste of time, but for each their own. I need to use my smartphone with one hand to be able to keep doing things in my life while I answer a text or a chat message or even this post on MacRumors while I travel on the bus hanging with one hand to the bus bars.

And no, my hands aren't tiny. They are average, with long thin fingers.

Would it be a bad idea to keep a low cost 4.7" SE type design in their line up for years to come in the $$350 - $400 price range ? Or is the design just to outdated ? Maybe they'll just keep bumping down the price of the XR.
I have a feeling that the next SE will use the XR's body (single camera everything), but with maybe an A15 chip inside. By this time, the rest of the iPhone lineup should be on OLED already.

The funny part is, although US prices made it look like Apple is targeting the SE for the sub $500 phone market, their pricing in emerging markets put the 2020 SE into the $600 territory. I really question Apple's ridiculous markups in some markets that destroy their own original price positioning.

I doubt it’s selling “poorly,” but I’ve repeatedly said people want larger screens, not smaller.
Oh, are you the spokesman for 'people'?

Some people, believe it or not, have smaller hands than others, and the largest phones available now are already way too large for such people.

Other people are also female, and female clothing, believe it or not, has tiny pockets compared to male clothing, which means any big phone wont fit in most female pockets. A smaller phone can largely solve this

To you it might seem obvious that a larger screen is better, but don't act like that's what 'people' want. In fact, the smaller variant of iphone models has sold better basically ever single year since they had 2 different sizes. Now there are 3, and it looks like the middle size will be most popular. So I'd say the 'people' want a medium sized phone, if anything.

I'm surprised my iPhone 8 Plus is still on the list, but then again, it is the only COVID-capable iPhone made. A mask makes all the other phones useless. I really think Apple needs to re-invest in some type of Touch ID as the mask wearing society is not going away very soon even with the vaccine.

The number speaks for itself.
And no, the smaller variant of iPhone models has not sold "better." This year, the 12 is the top seller, not the mini.
Last year, the 11 was the top seller, not the smaller SE nor 11 Pro.
Previous year before that, the XR was the top seller, not the smaller Xs.

The fact that a brand new iPhone isn’t in the top 10 is not a good sign for the mini. Even some random phone got in that I never heard of.

As others have said it just proves that a very vocal minority wanted them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple doesn’t sell a 13 mini next year.

Like Steve Jobs? Part of the premise of early iPhones is that it’s size was perfected for the typical human hand. That no longer applies to any iPhones. Maybe the mini.

maybe it's due to the fact many like to view content on their phone I dunno....maybe a lot don't want to use iPads as much but for me I think thats the perfect combo

Take India for example, they charge some of the highest GST and duty in the world, that's why their iPhones are so expensive. It's not Apple that's charging more.

And latex gloves don't do well for touch id. In my area I notice many seniors wearing gloves using iphones. There is no perfect biometric method. Both face and touch id would be great, but really wonder if that will happen.

A lot of people complain because they enjoy complaining. I'm sure most of the people I saw complaining about there not being a new small SE weren't even in the market for one. This is some evidence of that.

People who are content don’t run to internet message boards to state that. It’s dominated by whiners and complainers.

To be fair a lot of us were really excited for the 12 Mini, and I like many others even purchased it on launch, only to take it back within the 14-day cooling off period due to battery concerns.

I tried my best and loved the size factor with almost no sacrifices on performance, however, battery was not even lasting a full day with basic use. I took it back within that period and switched over to a 12 Pro.

The iPhone mini will be a great phone one day when power/performance constraints are not an issue
I still want a 12 Pro mini, because there would be no better feeling camera in the hands. But current battery and camera space limitations make it unreasonable for now I guess. Try again in 2030?
People who are claiming that the battery life is an issue with the 12 mini haven't used it. I replaced my iPhone X with a 12 mini and the battery life is actually better than the X. It lasts all day just fine. The lowest I've been able to get it in a day, with above-normal usage, is 30%.

For the few and far between events where I'm truly concerned that it might run out, such as at a concert (when we're actually able to have those again), I'll just bring my little 5000mAh battery cylinder in my pocket for reassurance. But so far I'm not even certain that that will be necessary.

I almost feel that Apple made the mini just to mask the price increase of the iPhone 12 to $829 from iPhone 11's $699 in the previous year.

Apple doesn't need to engage in shenanigans like that. The iPhone 12 is well-priced as it is.

And the point is that the world does not, apparently, value that feature. Regardless of what Jobs may have thought. And don’t be fooled - he would have been in favor of whatever sells well.

The numbers do not speak for themselves. People are not deciding between the mini or the 12 they are deciding between the mini and the pro. Since there is no mini pro option we have to assume that most pro sales are people looking for the best device in the smallest form.

I’d also wager that a lot of people think the price difference between the mini and 12 means the 12 is better, when in fact it’s worse.

Even if the mini ends up with only 5% of iPhone 12 series sales, that’s still millions of phones sold. Many of which wouldn’t have been sales for Apple otherwise. I waited for three years with my 8 for the mini. I upgraded every two years before that. A lot of 12 mini buyers will hold onto their phone for years, rather than upgrading if Apple doesn’t continue to offer them a suitable upgrade path in the future. Apple isn’t only in competition with other phone companies, but also their previously sold phones. If someone doesn’t like the existing offerings they’ll stick with what they have, which means lower sales overall.

So you are one of the people I am talking about? Vociferous, but in the minority?

There’s no point in arguing with me about it. The numbers are what the numbers are. I don’t know them, and neither does anyone other than Apple. If the numbers tell them to keep making small phones, they will. If not, they won’t.

What metric would you use to show your claim? And please show how the regular 12 is "worse" than the 12 mini.

Apple.com has no mention a pro level mini. The 12 has the same components but is larger and heavier than the mini. For a device intended to be carried with you this makes it worse.

If you consider being happy that Apple now offers a device that is completely enjoyable to use as vociferous, then sure. The mini being the least popular of the four 12’s doesn’t necessarily mean it’s on the chopping block either. But yes, only Apple knows what their plans are going forward, that’s obvious. However we’re on a site dedicated to rumors and speculation about what Apple may do in the future. “Only Apple knows” doesn’t exactly further discussion.
