Every single person in China uses WeChat. Everyone. It's also used for payments literally everywhere. Some only take WeChat Pay. So what do you think is easier if this moron in USA says you can't use this app, to tell 1B people to use another app, or to switch to Android?

It is, in some ways, a realisation of the original vision of the iPhone and the use of web apps.
Most of the apps inside wechat suck (on a technical level) compared to actual apps. Navigating back (within the app) and out of the app are really difficult. McDonald’s has four separate linked mini programs and it’s a 2 click process to move between them.
I’m glad that we are where we are today and the App Store came along. Wechat has traction and is super useful, but we can do so much more with real apps.
Trump, though, seems determined to destroy all of that through tit for tat and reduce everything to basic web apps. I wonder how upset he’d be if there was no Twitter app?

In the US perhaps. But Apple have their legal entities based in Ireland and Jersey (at least last I checked). So a US EO would not necessarily apply outside of the US given that ultimately Apple is not a US based corporation.
Does he not? He obviously does, and that's why he did these things. China has been doing many things to other countries, hitting emerging markets economically. The difference is developing countries are unable to fight back against the China behemoth, while the US can.
Google would probably have to remove it from Google Play, but there are other Android app stores that are not owned by Google and are not based in the US. Android apps also do not need to be downloaded and installed through an app store, unlike iOS. The only way Apple can get around this is by opening up iOS to allow app downloads from sources other than its own App Store.
Apple will be hurt by this far more than Google.
I do agree with the ban. Furthermore, I believe all tech from Chinese-owned interests should be banned in the US. China censors the iOS App Store in China and dictates what can and cannot be sold in its country. It levies tariffs on foreign products while we did not until recently. We are exceedingly fair to China when it sells its products in the US, but it does not reciprocate.
Any Chinese company can be compelled to provide all data it possesses about its users to the government, including those users outside of China. This is absolutely horrifying! I support all technology from China being banned in the US, Europe, and the rest of the world. China is a terrible, terrible country run by a demagogue. Communist countries without basic freedoms should be sanctioned and American companies should not do business there. China needs to be isolated.
While I am not a Trump supporter—my vote is going to Joe Biden—his war with China has had positive effects. It is forcing "Chinese" companies like Foxconn to expand into India, the Americas, and other parts of Asia. They will soon no longer be based in China. If we keep up the pressure, China will soon no longer be the world's manufacturing center. We need to inflict as much damage as possible upon their economy.

Google Play Store is not used in China. Having WeChat removes from the Play Store won’t have any effect on the Android platform in China or elsewhere.

the CCP owns WeChat. It is not only used for social media activities such as posting instant messages/group chats/sending pictures, it is used for digital currency transaction using QR code system.
when you jaywalk and the CC cameras identify your face via facial recognition, you get your fine pulled directly out of your account without you even doing a thing. You give homeless money using WeChat. You pay for your tickets. You pay for service. You pay for food using WeChat. every transaction is tracked by the CCP.
No WeChat account, no services. they don't take cash (many places do not just like how in the states many stores do not take Apple Pay). they don't give a rats ass about your American entitled attitudes in china.

Sure, making Apple and its customers take the hit, but how will it affect WeChat per se? WeChat is multi-platform and Apple has just about 15% of mobile phone OS market (the rest being Android), so how will penalising Apple for keeping WeChat on help?

The U.S. banning it from apple’s phones *in china* doesn’t really further U.S. interests. Even if the U.S. gov’t cared about the rights of Chinese citizens (I’ve seen no sign of that), banning it from iPhones won’t stop it from being used everywhere in China - it will just mean people in china aren’t using iphones.
