When realistically will they announce the new iPhone if it is due out in June/July...?

Care to elaborate for us uneducated Macrumour users?

New iPhone? Well, According to the past trends, the new iPhone refresh year is around June/July. However, there where rumors of Apple releasing a lower end model (like in their Mac market) with less features and costed $99. However, Apple dismissed that and said they weren't interested in selling, but producing the greatest product.

Then rumors started flying of an iPhone nano at $99, again Apple dismissed that indirectly. Analyst said Apple would have to fill the umbrella under $100 to penetrate the market deeper. Apple said it wouldn't; however, they did say retailers are free to price the iPhone as they saw fit. Hence, Best Buy is taking the initiative to offer the iPhone at $99 and voila, all rumors and news are confirmed.

I don't really see the big deal between $199 and $99. That $100 just does seem like a big deal to me when you factor in the contract. But consumers are not always the brightest.....

Consumers are smarter than you think. The reason nobody factors in the cost of the contract is because the consumer is going to be paying that money whether they have a BlackBerry, a Treo or an iPhone. Cell phone service is not optional for the vast majority of middle and higher economic class people. So if a BB is going to cost $2800 over two years and an iPhone is going to cost $2900 over two years, and the consumer has already decided that a smartphone is his choice, the relevant number is $100, not $2900.

The funny thing is that my FULL PRICE $299 iPhone actually pushed me over into the silver status. Now I could get the discount when I don't need it.......

Or... If you waited until June/July of '09, which is when we will all be able to see if Tim Cook's "interesting tidbits" pointing to new iPhones and possible different price points in the near future." do actually come about making the BB pricing the norm for all? :apple:

Have to say, the $199 price for a 16gb is looking good (I am a Premium member). I was going to wait until "next" comes out, but this might be good enough until then. I would think the 16gb would have pretty good resell value - but wonder if it would be enough to get me in the door on the next one in July or August for a few hundred dollars??

It's not such a great deal considering the iPhone 3G is at the end of it's product cycle. They're trying to clear'em out people!

No sale. The next generation iPhone will be worth full price. It's probably just another 4 months and we'll see the next gen with better processing and memory.

"Some" restrictions apply.

ha, I love that too. "MANY/MOST" restrictions apply is what I read.

The RAZR was so popular, nearly everyone owned it. that's what i understood.
some is going to happen with the iphone, perhaps.?!

Out with the 3G's and in with the G3's.... :D

I don't think Apple would do this though. I think that many people that buy an iPhone don't even pay attention to the product cycles. Or atleast that's what Apple is probably thinking. That's why they won't release any specs on the next generation iPhone, so people won't think that a new one could be coming out soon and they will go ahead and buy the remaining 3G's.

$100 saving is $100 regardless of the cost of the contract. If you're interested in an iPhone and qualify for the discount, this is a good deal.

Consumers who don't see the difference between $199 and $99 are the ones who aren't the brightest....

I just became a Silver member a few weeks ago after buying a TV for $2200 plus whatever I bought earlier!!! Now my mother is getting one.

Very good point. Consumers don't really have much choice in the way of data plan if they decide that they need a smartphone.

Would this suggest they are shifting the remainder of the current model to make way for the new?

One other possibility could be that sales have really slowed down since people are getting laid off by the billions, so they wanted to jump start that.

Just went to try to buy one. Sat there for an hour while the sales rep tried to access AT&T's network to activate my line. Aparantly they are doing maintenance, and he could not get through. Regardless, he is holding a 16gig phone for me.

Oh, and a tip for everyone. Make the rep lookup your reward zone account. When he scanned my reward zone card it only registered for a 50 dollar discount. Knowing that I am a premium silver member, I asked him to do an account lookup, and that got me the 100 dollar discount.

with both Best Buy and ATT offering discounts, i'm pretty sure this means we'll see a new iPhone this summer.

Upgrade from Original to 3G iPhone

Now, what if I take my clean, nice, lightly used 8GB Gen 1 iPhone and want to exchange/upgrade to the 3G model. I would like the faster speed, but I've been told to "stick it" -- that I am in a plan and I can't upgrade.

I mean, shouldn't we be able to trade in/upgrade these phones for a significant discount? I have the 8GB model, to scratches, original box, dock, all the cables, everything.

Let's a $50 = $75 upgrade to the new model? That would be fair. I just want the faster 3G speed and I am stuck on EDGE, I bought this a week before the 3G came out. :-\

Boy, that was dumb. The good news for you is that you can get a very good price on the open market. What makes you think that your carrier owes you money for your used product?

I went ahead and got this deal at Best Buy earlier today. I want to clarify that even though you get $50 off at regular Rewards member price....you end up paying tax of the regular MSRP price. So you are paying the tax of it as if you were paying $600 (I think). It came out to $54 tax and about $205 so in the end you only really save 12 bucks than if you bought it anywhere else full price. (In this case the 8GB model)

Very tricky. Although I needed a new phone cause my old 2G's screen cracked yesterday, I just wanna point that out to everyone. Your paying full price tax on discounted item.

When are the new iPhones coming out?

My AT&T plan expires this week.
So I am serisouly considering getting an iPhone this week.
But my only question is: when are the new iPhones coming out?
Is it worth waiting and passing up this good deal at Best Buy?
