It's not as bad as you think

Now, what if I take my clean, nice, lightly used 8GB Gen 1 iPhone and want to exchange/upgrade to the 3G model. I would like the faster speed, but I've been told to "stick it" -- that I am in a plan and I can't upgrade.

I mean, shouldn't we be able to trade in/upgrade these phones for a significant discount? I have the 8GB model, to scratches, original box, dock, all the cables, everything.

Let's a $50 = $75 upgrade to the new model? That would be fair. I just want the faster 3G speed and I am stuck on EDGE, I bought this a week before the 3G came out. :-\

OK, the great thing about the Edge iPhone is that you DO NOT have a 2 year contract. You can actually upgrade to a 3G anytime you want. The bad thing is that they won't pay you anything for it. Conversely, if your Edge iPhone had the same contract as a 3G, you would not even be allowed to upgrade it. ie, you would still be forced to pay $30 per month in data charges, or else pay a cancellation fee ($200?). Instead of the cancellation fee, we Edge owners had to cough up more up front. As you are probably aware, we Edge owners are rewarded with $10-$15 monthly savings in data charges.

That being said, I'm looking forward to replacing an out-of-warranty Edge phone which broke last week. I'm waiting till June. If last year is any indicator, look for 3G supplies to dwindle down to nothing 30 days before Apple announces so new 3G buyers can't return their purchases.

I went ahead and got this deal at Best Buy earlier today. I want to clarify that even though you get $50 off at regular Rewards member price....you end up paying tax of the regular MSRP price. So you are paying the tax of it as if you were paying $600 (I think). It came out to $54 tax and about $205 so in the end you only really save 12 bucks than if you bought it anywhere else full price. (In this case the 8GB model)

Very tricky. Although I needed a new phone cause my old 2G's screen cracked yesterday, I just wanna point that out to everyone. Your paying full price tax on discounted item.

I can't find that info in any fine print. Is it possible it has to do with your state's tax policy?

My AT&T plan expires this week.
So I am serisouly considering getting an iPhone this week.
But my only question is: when are the new iPhones coming out?
Is it worth waiting and passing up this good deal at Best Buy?
:apple:

You think anyone here knows that?

You actually might be right. If someone in another state can confirm if this is the case for them as well that would be nice. I'm actually having 2nd thoughts and I might just return it and grab a refurbished one fom AT&T since I planned on grabbing whatever new iPhone (if any) comes out this summer. Just needed a damn replacement asap!

I'll let you know tomorrow night, after I get mine. I'll be getting it regardless, because It's time to switch. I'm tired of my palm 700wx

Great. $50-$100 off a $2000+ contract. Nice try, Best Buy. Consumers may be fooled, but I'm not. That's between a 2.5%-5% discount, or near inconsequential.

What does your current cell phone contract cost you?

I work for Best Buy Mobile and I can tell you that this is just strictly a promotion to get our good customers into Best Buy and counteract any other promotions on other smart phones by other dealers. The current 3g iphone is still in stock and is not at its end of life yet.
It is the best deal yet and we were selling so many that a lot of the computers systems were down because of the activations on att's end.

Now where are all of those smacktards squawking about how Apple doesn't sell "cheap stuff"?

There's no way that BB is doing this on their own and taking a hit, they are getting some kind of buy in from Apple on this.

What does it matter? Its not like BB is charging more for the service. If you are going to buy an iphone anyway (like I am) a 100 dollars off is a 100 dollars off. Your logic doesn't make any sense. Are you saying you would rather pay full price because this "minor" discount is just an insult?

Fortunately, I have one on hold for me to get tomorrow. The activation fee will be waived too.

Question: First, I have horrible luck or I'm just dumb. Basically I got the iphone 3g 16gb back in August. It got stolen in October and I bought a new 8gb. Sure enough last month the 8gb got stolen, but I had a 2g iphone lying around so I have been using that since. I really want to get the 3g again and I am a premier silver member. Would it work if I paid the cancellation fee, minus the prorated $20 for the 4 months of my current contract and then purchased the 8gb at $99 to save me a little cash? Oh and I am on a family plan where the only iphone line is mine.

I pay about $30 per year, total cost. It's a pre-paid phone and the minutes don't expire. I average about $30 per year. over the last 5 or so years.

So you really don't need an iPhone; ergo, you don't really have anything productive to say on this thread do you?

I'm on my parents' plan, so about $10 a month extra. $20 if you distribute it across all phones.

All I'm saying is that the sale is inconsequential. I'm not saying it's BAD. I'm simply saying its benefit is effectively zero.

I'll tell you. First, you tell me which stock will go up most significantly in the next 3 months, and by how much.

Quite possibly one of the dumbest posts of the day, backed up by the fact that you only pay $10/month. Best Buy isn't in charge of the contracts. I pray that you know this, although that may make it worse. What the F does Best Buy taking $50 off the price of something do to make them "fooling" us? Only the stupid enter a contract not knowing how much it'll cost over the length, which for the length in the US is $70x24 ($1,680 -- your math is also horrible).

Other countries have much more flexible plans. Seriously, don't blame Best Buy for giving Reward Zone members a $50 price break. $50 is $50. That's like saving about $2/month off your phone if you want to look at it that way. It's not much, but it's the cheapest you can get a brand new iPhone in the US.

1. NOBODY needs an iphone. Plain as simple.
2. Why should somebody who is not on the telly every minute shouldn't have an iphone? where does it say "the iphone, perfect for everyone who talks much on the phone!" ? The capability of being online everytime doesnt make it impossible to use it offline. I own a touch 1st gen at and use it alot at university wlan. i'd love to have an iphone so that i dont' have to carry around ipod AND phone. Oh and besides, i have prepaid too.
3. I hope that you love the iphone because it can do a lot more than just being a phone. If not, you seem to be the one who hasn't anything producitve so say on this thread?

Is there a need to elaborate this? ;)

It's not such a great deal considering the iPhone 3G is at the end of it's product cycle. They're trying to clear'em out people!

What cycle?

The next 3G iPhone probably will have more memory (32GB?) and maybe a better processor and camera. Other than that, its got GPS and 3G and almost everything I can think of can be done through software updates (movies, copy/paste, etc.). There not releasing a 4G phone.

I just got this deal for wife, upgrading her 2G phone. She is set now for a while!

NOBODY needs a computer, so go throw yours away!

Can you explain how $50-$100 off is of zero benefit. I missed your logic.
