Try to think about the target consumer here. This is for parents to purchase for smaller children. With the well, you know, "issues" with photos, and videos being posted to Social Media and such.

Get the Wee Beasties this. Then they can have an Ipod Touch 32g when they are "In their Parent's Eyes" ready for the evil world of Social Media and all the predators. Then it's an iPhone.

IMO, I think it's Spot On. and will best the best selling iPod Touch ever. :apple:

There's still a front-facing camera…

The latest iPod Touch (including this new 16gb version) is currently one of my favorite Apple Designs. Bought the 32gb for my son 2 months ago - it is simply a brilliant design - beautiful, incredibly light, great materials and it really feels 'friendly' in your hands.
One day, the iPhone could be like this.

Apple does perform market research, just like any other company. I believe it's in Steve Jobs' bio.

I remember reading the part when Steve said why Apple was failing before he returned because Apple was busy on focusing making money that they were only doing incremental updates to all the products and not giving people what they want. Who ever decided that an iPod Touch in the day in age with out a back camera must be on something.

I agree. After handling the iPod Touch, all smartphones seem awkward and in comparison to me. The best part is how it slides into a pocket so easily and feels so light and usable on the hand. Also it still has the nice display as well. Even iPhone 5 seems slightly clunky next to the Touch.

I don't think that's quite what he said. He said something about salespeople taking over the company instead of the product people which is similar but slightly different. Jobs always been very adamant that Apple will show people what they'll want, not giving them what they want, and under him Apple famously didn't include any camera in iPod Touch even though they could have and planned to do it.

I seriously wouldn't mind an iPhone design that closely matches everything I just saw.

I agree, it would look good.

As for this iPod, I'd rather spend the extra $70 and get a rear camera and double the storage. But I do understand this will work for some who don't need that. Maybe they just want an iPod for the music but with a nice touch screen.

No camera, no buy

I can't believe anyone would buy it without a decent camera! I'm a longtime iPod Touch user, carry it with me constantly and use the camera often. I'd have to opt for paying the extra $70. I'd always thought for the price the Touch was an amazing deal, I'm guessing Apple thought it was too good a deal.

Again, you are not the target audience/market for this particular iPod Touch.

BL.

I feel like 16gb is far too small for a device like this. Even if it had cellular, 16gb! These days giveaway usb flash drives have more space than that. One movie from iTunes takes nearly half of the useable space. If this were the 32gb without the camera then maybe it would be worth it's price. (16gb with a camera makes even less sense). I really don't see who this is supposed to be targeted at, maybe people that already have another device like an iPad or Android phone?

Agree with you. Surely bigger HD space should be standard in iPod Touches. Even iPhones, 32GB should be the minimum. As with iPad's, 32, 64, 128. :apple:

This is THE colour scheme I would have wanted the iPhone 5 in... Silver back, black front. I hope the iPhone 5S or 6 will get this, I might even get one then.

I wonder though if they've skimped on the screen with this cheaper iPod Touch. The iPod touches have always had worse screens, at least since the retina model came out alongside the iPhone 4, viewing angles were worse on the touch and contrast and saturation were too.

When the new tall touches came out alongside the iPhone 5 they had exactly the same screen.. Viewing angles still look good from this video but I wonder if it's really the same screen still.

I would liked to see them integrate the camera into the iPod Touch without having it stick out so much, I really like the look of it without the bulge. It makes my iPhone 4S look thick :).

Would look better if it didn't have the black space on the back where the camera actually goes.
That is not the camera hole, that would be the wifi / bluetooth antenna area.

Anyone who says "iPhones are already thin, they don't need to be any thinner" should hold one of these. They'll soon change their minds.

Not exactly. iPod touches are a little too thin. I always had to put a case on mine so that the iPod touch didnt slip out of my hand hand every 5 seconds.

Am I the only one who thinks it is bs that they got rid of the back camera? I mean, what does it cost them? $7/device ?

I guess most people have a smartphone, but I remember my mom who had one of the early ipod touches (2nd gen maybe) who didn't have the back camera as well, and once said to me: "If it had a camera it would be absolutely perfect".

I guess people wouldn't bother to buy the new one if the basicc one had the back camera...

$7 * 10 million units = $70m.
Small drops make a mighty ocean...
In comparison, Lenovo made only around $125m profit in 1 quarter on sales of $8b.
This is why apple are rich and a lot of OEM's are practically dying.

And iamthinking number 5=
No rear camera allows this model to be "health club friendly" and could be allowed in to places where they have "no rear camera" policies ??

Good luck trying to stop cameras, especially if you have one of those arms straps to hide the device your sleeve or just flip it around to show the front camera only - there is always a way :)

signal for low cost iphone?

for me, this is a signal that the rumoured low cost iphone will not have a rear facing camera.
will still have front facing for facetime etc. no GPS?

I think most places just gave up even if they have no camera signs. Concepts for one, really? Last time I saw someone bring in a huge camera because they likely stopped caring because of the cell phones.
