Kids do take a lot of Selfies though and the front side cam allows that.
Nice looking device. It really evokes the iPad Mini look.

True. But that's really my point. Kids love taking photos. Now you are greatly restricting that practice.

It is a nice looking device, just wish it came with a back side camera, even a crappy one, like it's predecessors.

You are abolutely right. I recently surveyed 200 kids of all ages and they were all exactly the same.
Always a joy dealing with you types.

I'd like Apple to go the other way

I'd like Apple to make an iPod touch that is essentially a mini iPad mini. That is, an iPad that has LTE and GPS along with the camera. It would replace my GPS unit and kill the need for a smart phone. That way I only pay for data service when I want it (e.g. when I'm on vacation) and it is small enough to take along on hiking trips. I'd settle for no LTE but would really like GPS.

Taking away the rear camera is really stupid. Now you can't even use this as a point and shoot. LOL.

I see this being as geared towards kids.. but those from the preschool to 2nd or 3rd grade range, where parents completely control what gets put on the device. Limited capacity so it isn't everything and its mother (face it; for tweens and selfies, this is the wrong device; for the fanboi, this is the wrong device; but this isn't low brow either), but works great for a few kids albums and various children's apps.

By that, I'm meaning something like PBS, Curious George, Wheels on the Bus, Cat in the Hat, Thomas & Friends, etc.

That crowd that really hasn't been tapped yet for their own portable device, with parents tired of handing their iPhone over to them to keep them entertained and worried about them spider-webbing it or breaking beyond repair. But it is something more compact that parents could control more for their kids (read: ages 3+).

Design looks beautiful. As others said, follow this design for the outside, add a bit more inside, and you have the next phone that I'd stand in line for. $229 a bit much? I'd say so, but not too much. $199 or $189 would be optimal, but an extra $30 could be pushed for it.

Depending on accessories (read: case), I'm considering one of these for my children.

Perhaps because the target audience for this device isn't you.

Sadly, that's EXACTLY the reason why they will NEVER make one!

Quite possibly a 'test' product to gage market reaction before releasing the low-cost iPhone in a similar formfactor/color scheme, in addition to the before mentioned possible iOS7 compatibility issues. And judging by most of the above posts, a definite success!

I know, APPLE isn't known for doing market research to find out what people like, but as they have become the company they are now, they must have at least some worries about releasing products that turn out to be less than popular. Just good business sense.
Apple does perform market research, just like any other company. I believe it's in Steve Jobs' bio.

Now why couldn't they have made the iPhone 5 look that simple yet elegant!

(answer - trying to be too smart and over designing, result, complicated, ugly and boring! )

I seriously wouldn't mind an iPhone design that closely matches everything I just saw.

yes i was just about to post the same thing, this ipod looks so elegant yet keeps the same characteristics of what makes apple so unique. If the rumoured "cheaper" iphone looks like this i might just switch over to this design.

Anyone who says "iPhones are already thin, they don't need to be any thinner" should hold one of these. They'll soon change their minds.

I'll say that and stick to it. I can hardly keep the current phone from slipping and sliding away as it is.

I'm not going to lie; obviously it's a complete matter of opinion and I'm not saying 'my opinion is better than yours', but this is one of the ugliest devices Apple has ever made.

This really looks like something one of those off-brand touch screen mp3 companies would make...like a 'Sylvania top of the line mp3 player.'

I'll give it credit that the thing is ridiculously thin; but it's just plain ugly. Simplicity is one thing, but this is somewhat a step towards 'cheap.' I would expect it to be in the $139-149 range just by looking at it. I know it's specs are pretty solid; but the design is just not Apple-quality.

Granted, the protruding camera on the other models is awful, but if I were purchasing this, I would much rather have it a bit thicker and have a flush camera...I'm thinking the 1st and 4th gen touches were awesome designs; the last two...just kind of 'blah.'

I'd advise you to look at the refurb 5 instead, or even the 4s with a camera. Your 3-5 year old is not taking selfies to post on facebook :rolls-eyes: but they will want to take photos of their toys, mom/dad, siblings, dog/cat, their shoe, etc... They will also love taking videos of themselves dancing around, their friends dancing around, others being silly, etc... All to pretty much be missed by this misplaced product.

Right now, he couldn't care less about the camera and taking pictures as much as he cares about being able to play a Thomas, Curious George, or any other children's app we have for him that helps with hand/eye coordination. Right now, his biggest craze is watching Silvia Sanchez sing Slippery Fish, or watching other kids sing the song in Pre-K class like his class is:

Nothing that involves a camera. Kids from 3 - 5 are really not going to be worried about antics with a camera.

Try to think about the target consumer here. This is for parents to purchase for smaller children. With the well, you know, "issues" with photos, and videos being posted to Social Media and such.

Get the Wee Beasties this. Then they can have an Ipod Touch 32g when they are "In their Parent's Eyes" ready for the evil world of Social Media and all the predators. Then it's an iPhone.

IMO, I think it's Spot On. and will best the best selling iPod Touch ever. :apple:

This is an on-topic Apple thread about the iPod touch. Please leave your religious pushiness at the door.

I agree that this was not the place for that quote, but dude, lighten up. He was not being 'pushy' at all. He just put a post script on his ON TOPIC thought.Don't like it, move on. I may not agree with him either, but I didn't get all twisted over it.

Oh and for the mod, it was not a troll comment. Stately was just expressing an opinion after he contributed to the topic on hand. If you are going to mod his comment, then might as well mod all the signatures that have nothing to do with apple products. Let's all just chill out.

BTW, love this new iPod and if it was possible for an Ive "flat design" physically, then right on.
