A Few More Details about 'iPhone 2,1'

WHEW!

I'm glad we see these reports. Otherwise I would NEVER believe a new iPhone would ever be made or developed every again. ...just kidding, these reports are fascinating since they track the existence of new hardware coming along.

i would hate an iphone nano. whats the point? someone, please please, enlighten me!

As much as I like my iPod Touch I never use it for web browsing. I'd love an iPhone Nano because hopefully it's just a iPod+phone and smaller. The size/weight of the iPhone is a big turn off for me and because of that I'm still using a 3 year old phone.
The iPhone just seems overkill for me but I want a phone that syncs with OSX perfectly and has the Apple design.

Apple numbers their mobile devices like this:

<name of device><processor>,<version>

So the iPod Touch 1G was labeled <ipod1,1> and since the new one got a new processor, it was labeled <ipod2,1>.

The iPhone 3G and the original had the same processor, so it went from <iphone1,1> to <iphone1,2>.

The name <iphone2,1> means it is the first model of the iPhone with the second processor (the one already in the new iPod Touch).

Well you've obviously done a little research and a little is a LOT more than I have had time to do lately and I thank you for the post and for clearing things up for me a bit.

But...

Just because it is "2,1" as the ipod is "2,1" wouldn't necessarily mean its the SAME processor now would it?

The iPhone in its second version, hence the '2' in '2,1' could have a more powerful prcessor than the 2nd gen touch and then the touch, (probably upgraded in September right?) will be "3,1" for its next version which carries the newer iPhone processor without underclocking.

Does this make sense or am I completely off base?

Thanks ahead for any corrections, this is still a learning experience for me. :D

happen to be moving there saturday. i'm going to keep my eyes peeled.

You might want to limit your searching to the Cupertino area :p Seriously, if you are gonna keep your eyes peeled, try some places like Santana Row or Valley Fair... that's where the monied folks go and I gotta assume that if anybody is truly testing these things it's gotta be higher ups.

My $5 goes to the developer who writes an iPhone app that can extrapolate the PinchMedia data, use it to triangulate the location of the "mystery iPhone user," and instantly alert all iPhone users within a 5 mile radius for a thorough flash-mobbing of said "mystery iPhone user."

I want to upgrade my iPhone to the 3G model, but I'm afraid a month after I do, they'll announce a new model. I guess I wait (dammit!).

I'd like to see you complain to your significant other about how you can't delete individual calls (assuming you have one).

Just seems like a pointless omission. If you can delete individual text and email messages, you should be able to delete individual calls. That's all I'm saying. Regardless of the reason.

yes they released new phones in june/july for the last couple of years but that is no guarantee that another one will definitely be released this summer.
Apple could release a new iPhone ("iPhone Pro") soon and wait until June to upgrade the regular iPhone.

That completely clears things up. So that also explains the numbering of the notebooks, like the MacBook Pro going from 3,1 to 4,1 (Merom » Penryn).

Gah! I just bought an iPhone 3G yesterday. After waiting a year and a half for AT&T to arrive in Vermont I couldn't wait any longer. Probably will be released a day after my 30 days is up.

If it was smaller and it had another name other than just iPhone, they could possibly pack more sophisticated hardware inside. Especially with the falling prices in flash memory and smaller CPU's, it might not be a negative to have a thinner and lighter design. But does anyone agree they should go back to the metal casing design. It matches well with the new unibody macbooks. It's one of the many reasons I never upgraded to the 3G.

metal casing means worse cell signal. That's why they moved to plastic in th first place. Better WIFI/call reception.

It's fascinating to me that PinchMedia was able to record the fact that one of these new iPhones was being tested in the wild.

Whatever it is, I'll be up for one if it comes out in the next 6-12 months.

Here come the new set of iphone rumors. Honestly last year for the first 6 months of the year there were like 10 iphone 3g rumors a day.

Well. Two words. iPhone game edition. I think the new iPhone will have a few new upgrades (front facing camera) but more importatnly it will be a gaming platform, with physical side buttons.

I think it would be cool if they offered a gaming version and a business version so they can target multiple markets.

No! This goes against everything Apple stands for and goes with everything Microsoft stands for.

How many flavors of windows are there again?

And all of them somehow leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes that would be pulling a MS.

The one thing I'm sure of is that they'll find a way to get me to upgrade again. :apple: has gotten very good at getting me to part with my money!
