I'm not really gonna say exactly how old I am, but just because I said my first HD was that size, doesn't mean it was the first one I could have had...:D

Anyone old enough to remember that the Apple external 800K disk drive for the Mac 512K required a system extension/driver with ”hard drive“ in the name?

My iPhone has more processing power than NASA used to put a man on the moon.

An iPhone is a bad comparison. It is a very powerful device.
A standard calculator is a better analogy: even it generally has more processing power.

Heck, the Space Shuttle works on an old machine with 1MB (yes, megabyte) of RAM, and the something the Russian's use only has 1KB (kilobyte) of RAM. These things are drop-dead simple. Think about it: processing.... okay, flaps up. Done. processing.... okay, retro rockets fire. Done.

Its amazing what old, simple tech can do...

How many flavors of windows are there again?

And all of them somehow leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes that would be pulling a MS.

Yes, but what market share does MS have? Exactly. You can bash them, but I give them credit, because they sure have cornered the business market by actually making changes they want, and not TELLING them what they want.

That being said, Windoze mobile has nothing like the market share the iPhone does, so Apple certainly did something right there (but again, not too many big companies use iPhones. I dare say they are mostly WM or BB...)

Space tech trails behind terrestrial (consumer) technology because of the huge cost of space hardening computer equipment. Computer chips, memory, circuit boards, etc must be radiation hardened to survive and operate reliably in the harshness of space. We should consider ourselves lucky that Earth has a protective magnetic field. Otherwise we would not have our shiny iPhones and we'd have to wear some pretty serious sunblock.

i swear to god, do some proper hardware revisions...

i got the first gen iPhone and think it really is the smartest phone, a year later all they did was chuck in 3g... considering everything they could improve, e.g. flash, anti-shake reduction camera/software, video camera, and soooo many software updates e.g. file transfer bluetooth, mms, copy and paste (although i have to question why do people want this), sms forwarding.

while the iPhone is arguably the best phone there are so many improvements that can be applied, please bring them Apple

If you only knew…

FTR, the LEM's system had about 4K of RAM (enormous for the time). Less than most watches, must less calculators (even a TI83 over 20 years ago!). The command set was very specific and simplistic, but managed a huge amount nonetheless. Speaks volumes about elegance in coding.

What a terrible idea, which defeats the philosophy of apple as well.

I see your point, but I guess I just get frustrated because I see the iPhone getting dummied down to nothing more than just a glorified gaming console. I guess I am in the minority as everyone loves the game apps. I don't mind games (it's not that), I just think the iphone could be so much more and would love it to have better productivity/business type applications. Just my opinion.

Didn't you mean the "iPhone 4G Nano Tablet G5"?

Yet it will still have a 2MP camera and low battery life

Ok don't tell anyone, but I was talking to an inside source at Apple, k... and... I mean one of the top men there... ok? ... that they're going to ... shhh.... sh... you can't say this to anyone.... k ready? ... they're going to upgrade the camera TO ONE MEGAPIXEL!!!!! Oh man! I'm preordering it right now.

I don't know why people are still so obsessed over how many MP a phone has. The optics are far more important, and for the most part, the optics in camera phones suck. To significantly improve the phone's camera you would have to make the phone much thicker.

This is true, but using a slow CMOS sensor certainly doesn't make you feel like you've got a decent camera. Put a decent sensor in there that can also take 30fps video (640x480 at least) and you'll make most people happy.

After yesterday's story that evidence of an unreleased iPhone had been spotted in recent firmware as well as ad delivery networks, PinchMedia follows up with what few details they have about the usage of the device.

- 1st spotting of the "iPhone 2,1" device occured in early October 2008
- Usage picked up in mid-December 2008
- A few dozen distinct "iPhone 2,1" devices have been detected
- Almost exclusively located in south San Francisco Bay Area
- Both AT&T and Wi-Fi connections

PinchMedia provides iPhone developers with ad serving and analytic tracking software to embed within iPhone applications. This is how the the iPhone 2,1 devices have been detected. The iPhone 2,1 model is also found in the firmware of the iPhone 2.x firmware releases as we reported yesterday.

Article Link: A Few More Details about 'iPhone 2,1'

Strange. I am a developer since the App Store start and never viewed such a segmented report from Pinch Media. Even the iPhone is not divided in iPhone and iPhone 3g. Here is a snap of one of my Pinch Media reports. I am afraid the one posted showing 2,1 could be fake.

Oh man, imagine the bitching about the cost of a Space Hardened iPhone.
You could probably buy your own space craft for the cost of one of them.

Sorry 1st Gen and 3G users...

I'm sorry, but if you think Apple will release a software update that will incorporate things like Copy/Paste and MMS support on the 1st gen iPhone and iPhone 3G, you are mistaken. Sure, software udpates will occur to address a variety of issues but...
just think about the iPod video...let's go back in time to when the now "iPod Classic" was released in 80GB and 160GB versions. They were released with a snazzy new OS with coverflow to match the new version of iTunes, direct shuffle and was more efficient providing longer battery life. However, those with the 60 or 80GB iPod Video did not receive a software update that placed this new OS with the better graphics, new font, coverflow and direct shuffle (shuffle without going back out to the main menu --> clicking the select button 3 times during playback).
So when the new iPhone is released this summer, don't expect your phone to have the same exact OS functionality as the new version.

I'm down for any updates that add new features.
