For real though, the “Pro” in the title actually means something (as opposed to Airpods pro which I love lol). For creative professionals, it’s an investment.

I think Apple should have used a new name such as Mac WorkStation rather than Mac Pro since as you say the term Pro is now simply the name of the higher end prosumer equipment. It would have saved all the angst and envy posts from prosumers feeling left out.

... Also, I don't think anyone who CAN justify the current cost and will buy one would be unhappy with a lower cost physical design (see my post above).

I'm in Canada, entry level is $7500, over 50% more than american dollars...this is just insane for a computer at this entry level. I'm hoping AMD releases those cards in the wild.

No problem with the maximum build out price, it's available if you need it.

The problem is the base price, which could have been more reasonable if they didn't go nuts with the physical design. $400 for a set of casters? The functionality of polished stainless steel could have been accomplished with quality chromoly, for much less cost. They really didn't need to re-implement the cheese grater holes just for an updated "exotic" look (also wonder how much of a dust hassle it will be??).

I'm not saying it should look like the pre-trash can MP, but I think the tremendous drive to create such a marked departure from the last tower shows just how out of touch Apple has become.

I'm not sure if there is a lower cost alternative for the processor that supports less max memory, but still can live in the same socket and motherboard (upgradeable of course).

It just seems to me that they could have done just as good of a job functionally and hit a $3.5K - $4K base price - without - looking like a "putty" colored box.

Other issues aside* - If the base price was $3499 I would have clicked buy already. $3999 would cause me a bit of deliberation, but an eventual WTF moment.

* I'm a developer on the fence about Apple platforms (for a number of other reasons).
PowerMacs used to be similar price to iMacs. They were a prosumer option for those that wanted to be flexible, as well as a machine for the high end market. This is mostly lost now, some will argue the current Mac Mini can fill this spot, but there is little tinkering to be done. I would be all for a $3,000-$3,500 version of this. (Used to be lower, but Apple tax is higher now...)

To be specific, the "Apple Tax" is now just a pointless "WAY WAY over the top" unbalanced focus on design. Apple always did a better job on design, which I appreciated, but this MP goes way too far.

I suggested a $3.5 - $4k achievable base price based on improvements in tech since the MP had a $2500-ish base price. Ok, I could concede on a (very) low $4K price if a Xeon supporting < 1.5Tb is not available...

It would be way more if you couldn't dig tar sand oil out of Alberta and sell it at a loss - just to maintain 0.75 CAD for 1.0 USD. Building a certain pipeline (at the time) would have helped , but now it's too late so you have to beg the Saudi's and other unsavory cartel members to take (at a steal) it. We run on light sweet down here now!

Edit: Wait a minute! $7500 CAD is $5700 USD. Canada gets a $395 CAD discount? Apple is anti-American.

$57,500 after tax (education pricing) for a maxed out one with the display (+ VESA), AppleCare+ for Mac and display, and some other extras. The display is $5600 education price, with the base Mac Pro also at $5600.

Wow, I remember when the PowerMac G5s and Mac Pros seemed high in comparison at the time..great machines they were. Hopefully this won't create a huge divide between consumer and prosumer line-ups that were corrected before.

To those comparing to car prices, I dont know about others but I tend to use tech/computers more and often then I do vehicles...so I guess it would be a purposeful investment.
