Google does this best. Apple please focus on removing the endless bugs in iOS.
I love how Google Now can change the brightness of my iPhone screen and other system settings.....
You may be Google's biggest fan, but others prefer not to use them if possible, so alternatives are very welcome for some.

???? In my world they have "happened". I use Apple Maps all the time and it performs just as good as Google Maps from what I can see.
I agree. Used Apple Maps to go from NH to DC, and it was great. Same routes offered as Google Maps. Even alerted me to delays, and re-routes.

Not sure what the reason for all the hate is about...?

When I wake up in the morning, I use Aeropress Timer to make a nice cup of coffee with my handy aeropress. My iPhone now presents me with the aeropress timer in the morning on the lockscreen with the lovely good mornign!

It also knows that I have my gym specific pair of bluetooth headphones with which I watch Hulu shows on the treadmill. Now whenever those specific earbuds are connected via bluetooth, it presents Hulu to me as an option. When I have my regular headphones plugged in, I tend to listen to Spotify, and Spotify is presented on the lockscreen when my headphones are plugged in instead of apple music.

Maps has become very slick over the years. Google Maps is great, but the interface bugs me. Makes no sense at all. I wanted to find what traffic was like for my way to work, and I compared the routes and the traffic warnings -- they're repairing the freeway exit nearest my house. Siri automatically rerouted me. Waze warned me. Google Maps was unaware. But I discovered another thing: after I got the route from Google, and wanted to quit, I could find no way of disengaging or you know, "quitting." There was a target thing, a ropey thing, and some other indeciperable icons. Just pressing the home button meant the annoying adenoidal voice kept on telling me what to do until I got there.

When I connect my headphone jack the music app opens and every morning I check my emails so in the multitasking screen is comes up "Good morning, Dave" and shows the email app.

Heh, try making a call using Siri while driving with flaky 3G.

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

I noticed a couple of times when the map icon would appear on my home screen with a message like "25 minutes to get home." I have not had time to look into it so this article answers a few questions. Very cool.
It does that already on my old iPhone 4S in iOS 8 just under the weather but over my calender appointments on the screen that you pull down from the top.

But i like that they improve on it! Looking forward to this Apple! Would be great if it would do this against the appointments in the calender, for instance "23 minutes to the gym. Better get a move on! And take this route instead of your usual due to road works."

i will say how google does this is impressive. i love that it tells me when to leave my house to make an appointment or catch a flight. i'll try apple's attempt, but if it's buggy, i'll be sad and go back to the googs.

You have to check the Box for this when you make a calender appointment with an adress to go to get this in iOS 8, then it will calculate when you need to start from Maps, but I don't think iOS 8 will take into account traffic in my country sweden yet. They have a checkmark in Maps for traffic but i have yet to see any action from this choice in my use.

The most annoying thing about using an iPhone in my car (a Mini Cooper) is, it always starts playing the same song no matter what I've been listening to. I can be listening to Spotify, an Audible book or other track in music app with headphones, i get into car, plug into USB and the first song starting with A, By artist starting with A on album starting with A begins to play. If iOS 9 sorts this I'll be happy

In practice I have not found these suggestions as useful. For example, the traffic alert and ETA to a destination seems to trigger when I connect to Bluetooth in my car. It would be more useful to get the traffic alert prior to getting in my car so I can have advanced notice to change my route.

Mind you, I've had normal traffic each day so far. Perhaps when traffic is not normal it will alert you in advance? Anyone confirm or deny this?

Also, the app suggestions are nice and all, but for someone who meticulously keeps my home screen to one screen and only showing the apps I use most often.... it's been less than useful. Just sayin. :cool:

I've used directions in Apple Maps on iOS 9 beta and it'll route you the fastest way based on traffic, and if there's additional traffic midway through, a banner will come across the top of the screen and say like "Unexpected Delays Ahead. Faster Route Available" with a "Go" button to reroute mid-trip.

About the before you get in the car thing, that would be more complicated because it could only guess as to your location and maybe a common location of your car.

I get headphone, bluetooth and location based suggestions, but I still can't get anything based on time of day. I use Reddit and then iBooks every night before going to sleep and then check Instagram and Twitter every morning. I've been using iOS 9 since the first public beta and am pretty consistent, especially with reading iBooks every night, so I'm kind of surprised it hasn't caught on to my patterns yet...

But if you don't have enough service to use Siri...how would you have made the call anyway?

I hate to be the one who says this, but... Android does this.

My co-worker gets an alert shortly before we leave work for the day whenever there is traffic on his usual route home. Somehow Android determined that he usually leaves work at the same time daily and he will be heading home, etc, etc.

Thought it was just my car that did this!

So they should just give up and not develop new software to improve the user experience on their own platform? By your logic, there would be no Apple Maps, Apple Music or even Siri integration.

Right, Google should be the only one allowed to do these things forever and we should all suck it up and like it. That will really drive competition!

...Oddly, the "advice" you guys are giving very much resembles the advice that many Apple fanatics here give to Apple competitors whenever they announce new products or services that are similar in nature to what Apple already provides. Reference any time Windows or Blackberry make an announcement and it's mentioned here. Many posts we see here will be one of the following:

* Die <competitor> die!
* Since you're not Apple, there's no way you can be successful at this.
* Give up already.
* COPY CAT!!!! <-- This one is my personal favorite

Note: I'm not saying you both have done this yourselves. But the hypocrisy of the fanatics here should be called out (and yes, I know I'm on an Apple forum...but fair and objective discourse on this website is very much lacking).

Supposedly it runs on the device and does not require sharing information with Apple, which, if true, I consider a huge advantage over Google Now or MS Cortana (which raise some real privacy issues IMO).

While I agree that it's nice to know the Proactive Suggestions supposedly don't require sharing data with Apple, I'd like to ask you: Where do you think the following verbiage comes from? Google, MS or Apple?
"By using any location-based services on your <redacted> Device, you agree and consent to <redacted> and its partners', licensees' and third party developers’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data and queries to provide and improve such products and services."
